Relient K and MXPX are good too.
I also like Relient K. I don’t usually care for their religious songs, since they’re kind of shallow and/or imply non-Catholic beliefs. I mostly like their comical songs. I was pretty disappointed with their last CD, though. 😦

Lately I was listening to a guy named Jason Upton (prophetic worship) I have to say that I was deeply moved by his songs. check website here. My question to you guys is what do you think about this prophetic worship and Christian Music in general, is there certain kinds that are not appropriate or might hinder or mislead a catholic?

I haven’t been listening to the local Christian radio much lately, but I love the song “East to West” by Casting Crowns, and I enjoy much of their music.

One of my all time favorite songs has to be from Stacie Orrico “There’s Gotta Be More to Life”, and I especially like the music video. It really pertains to the culture in which we live.

I also recommend everyone, especially if you are atheist, listen to “What If” by Nichole Nordeman. It’s a beautiful song, which she wrote because of an atheist friend, but set to a contemporary beat.

I listen to a lot of Michael W. Smith and Matt Redman.

I’ve seen both in concert a number of times and have met them both.

Take Care,

Barbara

If you want a good cross section of styles of Catholic music (slightly different than Christian music) then go to www.sqpn.com and download some of the free “podcasts” of the CATHOLIC ROCKERS show for contemporary music.

We discovered Josh Blakesley- WOW! We absolutely love him! And he’s Catholic!!👍

There is so much great Catholic radio out there that I only listen to non-Catholic radio if the Sat is not working 🙂

Gregorian and Amelia Brightman- A Moment of Peace. It is a wonderful song.

In moment of piece

Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah
Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah

(Chorus)

Come now, come by our side
A place where you can hide
We are the sunshine
Rest your Soul here
And you’ll find
We are the energy
We give the world to thee
Hold up your heart now
We will ease pain from your brow

(Sarah Brightman)
When the world is in tatters
And destruction is near
You can come with us here

When the people are strangers
You’ll rest here with me
In a moment of peace

(Repeat Sarah once)

(Chorus)

Light up the dark below,
See through the stars,
Reach to the earth’s flow
Drift in the joy of our hearts,
Unleash the energy,
Taste of the wine
Drink as a Soul
That knows now, power divine

(Repeat Sarah Twice)

in a moment of peace

Joia Farmer is AMAZING!!!

So is Chris Padgett, Matt Maher (!) and Last Day!!! All are Catholic and all are worth jamming out too!

As far as Contemporary Christian, I’m a huge fan of Rush of Fools!!!

Well, here’s a little self-promotion…

Check out my songs at myspace.com/gfaucheux and a few more at virb.com/gfaucheux

One of my songs, “By Your Hand” was included in this week’s podcast of the Catholic Music Express and can be streamed or downloaded from www.catholicmusicexpress.com by clicking on the Listen tab and then selecting the September 30 show.

Let me know what you think.

Peace,
Gerard

This may or may not be one of the dreaded “Protestant” threads, but I’m just curious to see what others’ opinions of this is…

I enjoy listening to various types of music, mainly Contemporary Christian, because it uplifts me and encourages me…

Just recently I was driving home from work and the song “Bless The Broken Road” and it just seemed as if I was calm because I realized… the broken road is the life we lived before, and God blessed it to lead us to Christ, the Risen King, our Lord. So really, it just spoke to me.

Now, I’m not starting this thread to discuss this type of worship in liturgical settings, esp. Mass, but to discuss about Catholics or those desiring to become Catholic listening to this type of music just for worship and reflection.

I enjoy hearing “Hail Holy Queen” and all the other traditional songs, when I get the chance to listen to them, but it’s very rare, and although most CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) doesn’t refer to Mary, it doesn’t mean that I don’t feel Her in worship with me.

Just wanted some opinions on if listening to this type of music is wrong…

Young man you are all over this forum:D and God bless you for it. No listen to contemporaty christian music is not wrong, believe me you could be listening to much worse!! I personally like traditional catholic music, I also enjoy classical music, I am lucky that I own my own businesses and have a 5 cd player, I play 4cds of traditional catholic music and one cd of the Divine Mercy Chaplet in song, I get to listen to beautiful music all day long. God Bless.

I would say that unless the music contradicts our faith or the Church, then it is OK to listen to.

God Bless

I like most contemporary Chirstian music, although sometimes I find it to be… well, bad music. Not all of it. But sometimes, yes, the actual musicality behind it all isn’t that great.

Still, a lot of it’s good stuff. And like you said, not at Mass. (My university likes to use a lot of it during Mass, which bothers me to no end.)

If I could get my hands on some traditional CD’s I’d be a happy camper… but I too, enjoy orchestrated music, classical, some country, etc.

I guess I’m not a choosy listener, except if it has bad messages…

Not all of us non-Catholics get a chance to get a lot of Catholic music to enjoy… but a lot of the songs I listen to just bring me to a place of worship, without denying the truth of the Church… actually, some of the messages are more like sinner coming to truth, finding God, etc.

I love “He Ain’t The Leaving Kind”… awesome song about how God never leaves us, no matter what we go through or how those who are against Him try to remove Him from sight and sound.

I love ALL hymns. Why on earth would anyone complain about Christian music just for not being tradidional? That is just silly.

I think the main objection that some folks have to CCM isn’t musical, it’s theological. In theory, since most of it is written by protestants, it could have lyrics that contradict Catholic teaching. IMO, most of it does not and ‘iffy’ lyrics can generally be interpreted in light of Catholic teaching (i.e., they don’t blatantly contradict the Catholic faith).

Personally, I love gospel music (black gospel, not country gospel). I’m not much into CCM, just because it’s not my ‘thing’ musically (with a few notable exceptions). I also like classical music and traditional hymns whether Catholic, protestant, English, Latin - whatever. I dig it all.

The way I figure it, (1) we often encounter music and homilies in our own parishes that need to be carefully interpreted to square with Catholic teaching (and sometimes is just blatantly heterodox!), (2) like someone else said, there are worse things we could be listening to, (3) we don’t generally have scruples about the secular music we listen to (within reasonable limits, of course), and (4) if one is well formed in the faith, we’re not going to be shaken in our faith by the odd theological anomaly in a song (which again, IMO, are pretty rare - most songs are not theological treatises).

The way I see it, what you listen to outside of Mass settings is similar to what you read. Just like upon reading a book, you are free to read horror, fantasy, and other books both by Catholic authors and by those that aren’t Catholic as long as your conscience is well enough formed to recognize those things that are against the faith and they don’t cause you to go away from the faith.

The same goes for the music you listen to. I personally feel it is better to listen to CCM then a lot of the secular music out there. I personally like to listen to music that has a little harder edge to it (similar to classic rock) so it can pretty hard to find Catholic artists in that genre.
