I have a question on why the Church says that Contraception to include coitus interruptus to be a mortal sin. One instance the Church pulls from is Gen 38:8-10 for coitus interruptus, but this has a clear link to the fact that Onan did not full fill his Traditional Law of carrying on the Widow’s son. The argument can be made that there are other examples in the Bible of coitus interruptus where they were not killed. There are also examples in the Bible were people lied, but were not killed. It also seems that the Church is deeply divided on the opinion of contraception such as the Canadian bishops who wrote against the rejection of contraception. It also seems that before it was proclaimed in 1968 that contraception was a sin that the council of birth control overwhelmingly encouraged the Church to rethink its position on contraception. The Pope simply decided to go with the marginal minority. How can the Church be so deeply divided over something that should be so clear? The Church has already shown that it is able to change its position as new advancements in science and understanding come to light such as the rejection of Galileo and his theory that the sun orbits the earth. To deem something a mortal sin without clear direction from the Bible seems like it would be a bold statement.
Homosexuality is not open to life in even the slightest as 2 members of the same sex are incapable of creating a human life. With contraception there is always a chance that someone will get pregnant. Condoms, the pill, and diaphragms are very effective but also not 100%. Coitus interruptus is also only 78% effective due to the nature of the act. Thus contraception between to married people can still open to life if it occurs but simply use modern drugs and medicine to more directly control the timing of children. The argument of things such as the pill also do not seem to account for things such as life saving drugs and medicine that help the sick and the dying. If it is someones time to die to you believe that God will allow them to continue living even with the most advanced medicine? If God determines that someone is going to have a baby do you believe that any man made method of preventing a pregnancy at the time will stop God, of course not.
Finally I have read that the church teaches that contraception encourages people to more easily cheat on their spouse due to the reduced risk of conceiving a child. To me this seems like a straw man’s argument in the sense that the Bible very clearly states that sex is for a married man and a married women for the rest of their lives. It also clearly states that adultery is wrong. For the Church to say we are going to take it a step further and say that something that isn’t in the Bible to be a mortal sin in the hopes of preventing other mortal sins that are clearly spelled out in the Bible is another form of over reaching. Sin is apart of being a human and it is up to the individual to do their best to uphold the teaching of the Bible and if they directly go against the teaching of the Bible they should face the consequences of either confession or rejection of the teachings of the Bible.
