Well, based on what I have read, it appears I may have been on the wrong track. Oh well. 🤷 I was just a passing thought.

I will add that the wacky environmentalist defeatism is posted here is, well, wacky. Since the poster was not even able to politely present his/her/its opinion, they utterly eliminated any credibility.

I really think that’s a sweeping generalization that leaves out a great many variables.

Of course it is a series of sweeping generalizations. That was the whole point. I was talking about society as a whole, not individuals.

One major thing you left out — the parent who is raising the children. It is the moral obligation of the mother (in most cases) to teach children respect, kindness, forgiveness, etc… in getting along with others.
I am one of eight kids, my husband one of 2. He is more of the traditional child, and we have 2 kids. I stay at home with my children precisely to teach them morals. so it is not always the number of kids, in fact we would love to have more children, but God has not intended it.

I agree with others that your asessment is simplistic. I grew up with two siblings as a middle child. I suppose that makes me borderline large family šŸ˜‰ I do not get on with my brother and probably never will, and I would admit freely that I am a more selfish individual than some of my only-child friends. Often the parents of only children are, I think, less inclined to spoil them because they know that is what is expected! Also, parents of only children have more of a chance to ā€˜get on with their lives’ than if they have many children, when their lives may be more about family. So these kids grow up to actually be pretty selfless, and learn to fit in and agree, not because they have with siblings, but because they have with their parents, and with peers from other backgrounds.

Hi, I don’t think that it’s as simplistic as you say but there’s probably some truth in the fact that children from smaller families may be more concerned about goods and sometimes find it more difficult to share than a child from a larger family. In my experience large families can encourage good interpersonal skills. However, a child from a small family could feel that they missed out in terms of social interaction and family support and feel more isolated and sometimes reject their upbringing. Not everybody from a small family is selfish although there is a trend towards many children from families which use contraception to leave the Church as they’re more interested in money.

From this, the next generations decides that it should now be a criminal offense to ā€œbullyā€ someone (This is the case in Oregon. What constitutes bully is not defined and is completely subjective.)
I don’t see how the idea that bullying is bad fits into the rest of your argument. Surely Columbine has shown that tacitly allowing bullying only leads to disastrous consequences.

The They had to learn early on to get along with their siblings, deal with the town bully and co-exist with people whom they disagreed with or even despised. The kind of behavior we see in public today would destroy these small communities.

Contrast that with today. Most families have only one or two children. For many, their first babysitter is the TV. Children who have few or no siblings do not really learn the concept of sharing as deeply as those in large families do. In short the children tend to be spoiled. As their parents were raised in similar environment, no one sees the problem. .
I’ve known single children (now ā€˜grown’) and they do seem more selfish, more self-centered, than those raised in a big family…

also i have lived in mostly protestant geographical areas and the people there are more self-centered than in the more Catholic places…

kinda hard to say if its a Catholic thing or a contraception thing… but of course, it is both…

Jesus said there are few who find the narrow road to eternal life…

i see this all the time… people going against the teachings of the originl Church… ā€œCatholicsā€ doing so at a rate comparable to those who are not Catholic…

are there any real Catholics left/

Where are they???

More judgmental, hateful, unloving, pointless posting on Moral Theology I see.

I don’t know why the hell I keep coming here.

Some people have small families because they have a disorder that has made it hard for them to have children. Some have small families because they used contraception at first, realized they were wrong, and went back to the true faith, but by that point they were too old to conceive. Some have small families because they try to be chaste. Sure, a lot of the people with small families do use contraception, but so what? Even though they’re making a big error, you should still treat them with the love and understanding they need.

People have lost the right and proper sense of what marriage is. It is a Sacrament ordered towards production. Families kept small by choice, rather than circumstance, are therefore a sacrilege. Once parents have decided to keep their family small, in a self-absorbed yearning for their own convenience, is it any wonder that such a ā€œme-firstā€ attitude trickles down to the children?

In the interests of full disclosure, I am the parent of a single child. I am ever-aware of the potential that my son could become a selfish little brat, owing to the lack of siblings for him to be forced to share or get along with. I have done what I can to address this situation through a variety of means.

I think what the OP says is true, to an extent. Small families have a greater potential to encourage an inflated ego in a child, but it is only a potential, not an unavoidable end.

The love and understanding due a family using contraception is to point out in no uncertain terms the evil that they are committing.

Wow! Hate, profanity and judging the state of souls, mind reading and false statements all in such a short post. What a wonderful example of Catholic values, morality and morality.

Of course, none of what you imply about my idea and what I said it true. Nor did what I say imply that there was no understanding or charity. I was clearly intentionally making making broad ans sweeping generalizations as I was talking about broad social changes, not the behavior of individuals.

And for that, you swear at me.

That says much more about you than me.

No matter how many Children parents have, they are not going to be all the same, they all have different personalities. Even tho they are all raised with the same values , doesnt mean they are all going to turn out the same. Some parents were the best of parents & their Children turned out bad, other parents were the worse, & there Children turned out very well. Someone once told me that everything we try to instill in our children is lost once we send them out to school with children who come from many backgrounds. I kind of believe that cause thats where a lot of our troubles come from in raising our Children

As a child growing up in the late 1950s and 1960s, the average number of kids was two. TWO.
Actually it was almost three (2.98) for whites and four (3.93) for blacks. Scroll down to Table 1 here. In 1960 it was even more: 3.53 and 4.52 respectively.

Wonderful logic! At the other end of it, when you consider that currently we are consuming faster than the Earth can replace our resources, we can have larger familiies that use more stuff that is made by outcosting which results in poor countries being tken advantage of for our benefit, and mass starvation and disease.YEAAAAA! Lets go have more and more kids! The hell with everyone else! let the buggers starve!

Yes! Let’s do nave more children so we can be kind, considerate, and generous!
Do those links provide the evidence to back up your statements? I clicked off of them once I got tired of waiting through the graphics.

Are you suggesting that large families consume more?

Well, larger families breathe more so that means more carbon dioide, which is now considered major pollutant, so I guess a larger familir, by the fact that they are breather, pollute more. (I am trying to point out the absurdity of carbon dioxide being called a pollutant.) If they are nor vegetarian they consume more meant and apparently cows, due to flatulance, are one of the most significant sources of greenhouse gas. So, according to wacky theories pushed by idiots like Al Gore and his mindless minions, large families are inherently evil and selfishness is a virtue. I may be wrong about the social consequences of contraception, but I do know that I am correct about the so-called environmentalists.

The OP has over simplified it whats going on. Lets look at my family Im out of a family of 8 children of which I’m the oldest. Anyone who says there is patience in my family other than my mother is a couple beers short a sixpack. First there was never fighting over the tub or shower because it was scheduled by dad. You either followed the schedule or got a foot put to your fanny. All us Pawloski kids are not patient likely because we are used to seeing our dad get his way even by force. Thus subconsciously we expect that for us our selves. By the way to get rid of my anyone might be thinking my dad is the oldest of 7. What I think plays a big part of this way to conduct of family life is ethnic dynamics. When he was growing up my dad’s mother set the tone for the family. She was a Stern German lady. She had a Germanic temper and ridgidness. Today rather than family size I think its parenting style that’s ruining todays kids.
