Contraceptive Heresy

I disagree. This was discussed on Catholic Answers Live many times this year. Early term abortion, due to inability to implant, is usually due to thinning of the uterine lining caused by oral contraceptives. The thinning effect lasts long after use of the pill has stopped.

By the way, this was discussed by the experts as guests on the show.

About whether it is heresy to believe that it isn’t a sin. See here and work your way backwards through the footnotes and references to read the arguments.
In that case I agree. I don’t think the Church has ever gone as far as to label this a heresy as such, or to consider it a matter for latae sententiae excommunication.

The teaching is cryctal clear and all Catholics should assent to it. But for those who don’t, the Church has not specifically addressed their status.

But in case anyone thinks that lets them off the hook, contraception is considered grave matter for mortal sin, so practising contraception with full knowledge that the Church condemns it is very serious indeed.

The Church specifically teaches that this is grave matter, and if it is done with full knowledge and deliberate consent it is mortal sin. And, you know, without repentance the confessor is allowed to deny absolution.

As for their status: check the quote from the document by the Pontifical Council for the Family, above:
The Church has always taught the intrinsic evil of contraception, that is, of every marital act intentionally rendered unfruitful. This teaching is to be held as definitive and irreformable.
Just like for any other such teaching, there is only so far we can go in disagreement and always under strict obedience, otherwise we risk to fall in a sin against faith:
2089 Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it.
"Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same;

Yes, the teaching is definitive and irreformable. That discussed the teaching, not directly those who use ABC. It’s still fair to point out that the Church has not declared it a *formal *heresy to disagree (she may do so in time), nor to condemn as heretics or excommunicated Catholics who use ABC. Those who *teach *contrary to the Church may be considered differently, as relevant.

The Church seems to recognise that this is a difficult teaching for many people and that the teaching should be accompanied by some pastoral compasion (though not excuses to use ABC), rather than a heavy hand.

With that said, those who use ABC against the teaching of the Church, knowing clearly the teaching, may be in mortal sin, so it’s actually far more serious than excommunication!
