I don’t drink Coke (I hate soda), but I think the commercial’s pretty cool. I can understand encouraging new Americans to learn English (after all, it will make things easier for them and for others), but there’s no reason they shouldn’t keep using their other languages, too. That’s a skill they have. Why should they not use it just because I don’t know what they’re saying?
The way I see it, America is a country that is united by the ideals of freedom and self-government. We’re not like European nations with long histories and populations that lived in one place for millennia. The people who built this country were living in a land not their own. Most of my ancestors didn’t rebel with the 13 colonies- many arrived from Europe in the 1800’s, and others lived in Canada first. The first and second-generation immigrants of today may seem like foreigners to us now, but they have just as much right to be here as I do- and maybe more, since they had to give something up to call themselves American. The immigrants of today aren’t any different than the immigrants of the 1900’s, 1800’s, 1700’s, or 1600’s. They’re joining us here because they believe that this is a place where people can prosper and make a life for themselves if they work hard, or because they want freedom- the very same reasons why the original colonists left Europe. What could be more American than wanting life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and sugary drinks that rot your teeth?
As for the gay couple… I honestly didn’t notice them until someone pointed it out, and even then, I don’t think their relationship was particularly obvious. They exist, so I guess they’re going to be featured on TV.
