I think that is unfortunate. The statue disgraces the memory of Pope John Paul II and also the cultural image of Rome. The artist was careful to specify that any changes would be “minimal”. "The statue is not being redone,’’ Rainaldi said.
I think that, too, is an unfortunate decision.‘‘Substituting the statue would have been too drastic,’’ said Culture Undersecretary Francesco Giro

I am always ammused by cavalier attitued taken by traditionalists to bash the hierachy and Holy see on any matter under the sun, no matter how slight. Please show greater respect to your spiritual elders in Rome and do make such rash and opinionated comments. It seems that Rome obviously doesn’t care about guarding its Vatican image.
In fairness to the person you quoted, I don’t think he was criticizing the Holy See. Rather, he was agreeing with my statement that the city of Rome’s cultural image suffers from this statue.YoungTradCath;8807627:

Certainly we should treat everyone with respect, even public figures we disagree with. Perhaps the artist respects Blessed John Paul II, I don’t know enough about his views on the subject. However, simply accepting a contract to produce a statue doesn’t reveal anything about an artist views. He may have desired the money or the chance to produce a work which would be seen by thousands on a daily basis.I really loathe modern art. But we must charitable to the artist who obviosly respects the Blessed JP II enogh to even make a statue in his namesake.
The hierarchy and the Holy See had nothing to do with creating this ghastly statue in the first place.I am always ammused by cavalier attitued taken by traditionalists to bash the hierachy and Holy see on any matter under the sun, no matter how slight.
