Where are the inequalities in the admissions requirements if they are applied the same to everyone?

The social issues that are cited by others here are not race specific (ie. Inner-city, poverty levels, exc). Caucasian children in an impoverish area with bad schools don’t get that same consideration – based solely on the color of their skin. This is not about leveling the playing field it about leveling it for a select group – that’s where the issue is. If a school had a white recruiting incentive it would be racism – if it is a minority incentive it is affirmative action.
Since this thread is based on a CNN news story you naturally have to go elsewhere to find reliable information.

The bake sale is in response to SB 185 that awaits Brown’s approval.

SB185 would authorize the University of California and the California State University to consider race, gender, ethnicity, and national origin, along with other relevant factors, in undergraduate and graduate admissions.

You got it! The whites have held the whip hand for so long and now come crying and whining about why it’s oh, so wrong, so very wrong to show any effort at redress or to make any corrective balance in opportunities towards minorities. Yeah, sure. 🤷
I don’t own a whip - do you?

Nope. Noone in my family has either.
Same here. My family was run out of Virgina into west virgina for refusing to own slaves or support slavery.

“whites” have no problem with addressing social injustice. Redress? Sure! But commit all out RACISM? No. Sorry, a grave sin and intrinsic evil such as racism is never okay because “they did it first.” Unless we want to start saying the death penalty is okay for everyone. 🤷

Obviously this is a nefarious attempt to further compound the obesity problem for minorities and reduce their lifespans. It is immoral for the Young Republicans to profit from this. At the very least we need a sales tax surcharge on all reduced price cupcakes sold to minorities to fund a public service advertising campaign to make obese people feel better about themselves.

PS. Maybe an exception could be made if the cupcakes were carrot cake made with gluten free, organically grown, free trade whole wheat flour from a wiccan lesbian commune in Wyoming.
I realize that you were being sardonic here, but people who cannot eat gluten suffer from an immune disease that makes it impossible for them to consume whole wheat flour. There is no such thing as “gluten free whole wheat flour.” Also, the GF diet is not optional for people with celiac disease. If they consume wheat, barley or rye, their immune system attacks their small intestine and causes dire symptoms.

All right, Rich - when will it be enough? When will the wrongs of the past be righted? Give me a timeline. Give me a dollar amount that every black person alive in the United States deserves to have because slavery once existed on this continent. I want it quantified. Because I suspect that NOTHING and NO AMOUNT will ever be enough - it hasn’t been so far. I really want to know - WHEN and HOW MUCH.

And why should every white person alive today pay any money whatsoever because slavery once existed on this continent? My ancestors had no slaves and for all I know, they were abolitionists. Should I then accept the fact that merely because I am white (actually pinkish) I have a debt to pay to all black Americans?

I am sick and tired of this racial separation, and one day, the race card will truly be too worn and tattered to play any longer. My son, who has black friends, is called the “n” word by them in affection. Neither of my sons sees any color of skin as any impediment to friendship. When their generation gets a little older, it will all be over. We are ALL AMERICANS NO HYPHENS.

Just wondering what would Jesus do? (Other than shell out the $2.00 for a brownie.) (BTW was Jesus white?)

No, he was arab in appearance. I wonder if they were heaped in with the whites…but that doesn’t really work because of all the discrimination they faced after 9/11…maybe give them money to take a cookie?

It’s not at all about money payments.

Anyone calling my sons “Polacks” or “Wops” or “Ginzos” would have their faces broken. Your son is different in his attitude, and that’s fine.
We are ALL AMERICANS NO HYPHENS.
I’m Polish-American, my wife is Sicilian-American. We are proud of our ethnic heritages.

Okay Rich, give up your house that your evil ancestors stole from the Black man or the Indian and live on the street. Give away all your material possessions including your prized NYT subscription as well because your ancestors stole it from the minorities and then we’ll talk.

I find it amazing that you would believe that liberalism is something moral when you advocate holding people responsible for because of their ancestors.

Should Germans today be held in the Hague for the crimes of Nazi Germany?!!

Your family may have come over on the Mayflower; mine didn’t.

My family came over a bit more than 100 years ago. What minority did they steal the NYT from?

I feel the same about those who believe that conservatism is good.

Where are the inequalities in the admissions requirements if they are applied the same to everyone?
The argument is not that there are inequalities in the admissions requirements – the argument is that inequalities exist in terms of the educational background afforded to minorities. As a result, applying the same admissions requirements to everyone – and thus implicitly assuming that everyone is coming from a level playing field – is actually unfair, not fair.

Now, as you go on to note, these issues aren’t always race specific, but in practice, they frequently are race specific, to the point that minorities, in general, don’t have the same opportunities that whites do, in general. Obviously, that’s not going to apply to every case, but it applies to so many cases that we can say we want social policy to address it.

Equally obviously, minorities, in general, don’t have the same opportunities that whites do not because they’re “lazy” or because they don’t “work hard,” which is the typical racist rhetoric, but because of a very long and complicated history of social and political oppression.

It’s important to note that this is not a sob story, as some posters have callously attempted to pass it off as. It’s not a “Ah, woe is me! Boo hoo, boo hoo! Won’t someone please help me!” story – it’s an observation about a serious problem that’s affecting a portion of the population, and it’s a problem that’s split more or less along racial lines.

One policy solution is that college admissions should take into account these discrepencies of opportunity when evaluating applications. Is this going to result in some cases where a poor white kid gets the short end of the stick while a middle class black kid gets a big advantage? Sure. There are always going to be a handful of situations like that and abuses and other things that people generally don’t like. But overall – and this is, after all, a big picture policy – overall, it will make the tremendous unfairness of the system that currently exists a little, teensy bit more fair.

And yes, maybe that means that some upper-middle class white brat is going to get wait-listed from his top choice and have to go to his second or third. Oh, the horror.

Play me the world’s smallest violin. I’ve got zero sympathy for people who whine about their enormous privileges being slightly curtailed so that the system, overall, can be made more fair. If you’d like to label that “discrimination” and try to argue that it’s “hypocritical” or a “paradox,” you’re free to play word games all you like, but it’s not going to make a bit of difference to people who actually understand the issues.

So to sum it up you support racism.
