Hi Jeff, thank you for coming on to discuss your faith. I recently read some things about your church and I copied them and listed these things about what a Mormon thinks God is. Can you tell me that what I have written here conform to your teachings?

God is:
  1. God used to be a man on another planet,
(Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333).
2. “The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s…” (D&C 130:22).
3. God is in the form of a man, (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 3).
4. “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see,” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345).
5. God the Father had a Father, (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 476; Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 19; Milton Hunter, First Council of the Seventy, Gospel through the Ages, p. 104-105).
6. God resides near a star called Kolob, /I](Pearl of Great Price, p. 34-35; Mormon Doctrine, p. 428).
7. God had sexual relations with Mary to make the body of Jesus, (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 4, 1857, p. 218; vol. 8, p. 115). - Many Mormons and not always ‘officially’ taught and believed. Nevertheless, Young, the 2nd prophet of the Mormon church taught it.
8. “Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones.” (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 38)

I think this can be summed up by a quote by the 5th President of the Church, Lorenzo Snow-- “As man is God once was, as God is man may become.”

This can be understood by understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ-- God’s Plan for His children:

Did you get this off of a website?

Hi Jeff,

I read it on a website that states this is what the Mormons teach about God. Being Catholic, I felt some of the writings were different that I had previously heard and that is
why I asked you if they were true. I was not trying to offend or upset you, just trying to
clarify of few statements about God.

AS a former Mormon, who fully understands the official positions of their church, I assure you the LDS completely reject the numerous references in the Bible which insist there is only one God, that there was no God formed before the one true God and there will never be any God formed after him. As the Judeo-Christian tradition has maintained from the beginning. The central doctrine of the Jewish faith remains "there is only one God and his name is Jehovah.
The Mormon position also is nothing new. Pagans have always had “the gods”. Theirs was the belief specifically forbidden by the one true God when he said “Thou shalt have no other Gods”. Israel and Christianity have always known this heresy is strictly forbidden by our God and is a clear distinction between those who follow the True God and those who are misled by the devil. Satan from the beginning was cast out for this very reason, he wanted to be ‘like God’. Adam and Eve were deceived by the same lustful temptation as Mormons for Lucifer promised them if they partook of the forbidden fruit “you shall be like gods”. Joseph Smith similarly promised those who followed his biblicly forbidden teachings “then shall they be Gods” . The pattern couldn’t be more obvious. Satan’s desire to be like God and Joseph Smith’s desire to be like God. Satan promising those who obey him they will be like God. Joseph Smith promising those who follow him they will be like God.

We members of the LDS faith just try to live life day by day with no regrets. We try to live in an accordance that is acceptable to God. For we do things to protect our bodies to be susceptive to the Holy Ghost and loving guidance of our Heavenly Father.

We are all like God, we know good from evil. Adam and Eve fell in order for us to have this knowledge. God sent us to earth to become as him, to have a body such as his…

Well spoken… Your understanding of your doctrine is correct. Mormons actually do believe that when Adam and Eve broke Gods commandment they did a good thing… (without trying to be offensive, you would expect nothing less from a religion which has the same pursuit as Satan’s)
You should be made aware however, that all Christians believe that Adam and Eve displeased God when they broke his commandment and thus brought original sin into the world. It is obvious to honest observers, Mormons are applauding Satan’s work and his lust to become like God.

I do understand that typical Christian belief is a bit different. From my understanding, the original sin theory is the belief that we are all affected by the act of Adam and Eve. Where in Mormon belief, our acts are will result in us suffering the consequences for our own sins.
Correct me if im wrong about the Christian belief.

Our goal is not to take away the glory of God as Satan did. We do not applaud sin to any degree. Satan wanted the glory. He was/is prideful. We are obedient to follow this scripture in Mathew 5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Obedience draws us to God and Sin pulls us away from God and towards Satan.

Hi Jeff, so if I understand this, if you are a good Mormon, you become a God? Wow, that is great. As Catholic Christians, we only go to heaven to be with our Lord and Savior, and I guess from what I am reading, Mormons actually become Gods? Is this correct?

God, becoming a god
  1. After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345-347, 354.)
  2. “Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them,” (D&C 132:20).

God, many gods

  1. There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).
  2. “And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light,” (Book of Abraham 4:3).

God, mother goddess

  1. There is a mother god, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443).
  2. God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 516).

It would make sense that god is all knowing and knew the possible outcome when satan made his temptation. Glad to hear that the lds church has the same pursuit as Satan’s.
Strange however how such a church as the lds church can be such a force for good in this world.

PS. Satan however is not all knowing. Satan can never become like god since he never had a body.

Just to let you know, Mormonpro is a former member of the LDS church… just for clarification.

Hi Jeff,

No I was not being sarcastic. Just shocked. Mormonism is considered a non-Christian cult by all of Christianity. All you need to do is go to any Christian bookstore and look in the cult section; you will see books on Mormonism there. Now, are we “anti-Mormons” or simply people who have a grudge against the LDS church? I can’t speak for all who oppose Mormonism, but I have no grudge against it at all. I was never a Mormon and no Mormon injured me in the past. They/you are nice people. The problem isn’t with you, It is with what LDS teaches. It simply isn’t Christian.

Mormon missionaries will tell you that there was an apostasy and that Joseph Smith was the one who restored the true gospel to this earth. This is a typical claim by every cult. Every cult religion says that the present Christian church is false and that their initial leader restored the “truth.” They have to invalidate present Christianity in order to get you to accept their brand of it. Satan is a master of persuasion.

Christianity teaches that there is only one God. Mormonism teaches that there are many gods. Christianity teaches you cannot become a god. Mormonism says you can. In fact, Mormonism teaches that God used to be a man on another planet who became a god and brought one of his wives with him to this world.

Here is the bottom line, you are betting eternity in heaven or hell on your belief. Personally, I have chosen Christ, over five hundred people saw Him after His resurrection and that is good enough for me.

I love you and hope you make the right choice as eternity is a long time. God bless.

For understanding, When Adam and Eve fell they brought death into this world and thus upon all men. A common theme in the Bible is that one man came death, and by the sin of one many are dead etc. etc. (original sin). Original sin is taught throughout the Old and New testaments.

As for the Good that the Mormon Church does. To paraphrase Paul; though you give your body to be burned, though you give all your goods to the poor etc. etc. and yet do not have the pure love of Christ, it avails you nothing. As proof that what good works the Mormon church appears to do are only for deception I ask you to consider The LDS Church’s Position on Abortion.
The LDS church’s position on abortion is the same as written in the law in the court case Roe vs Wade, with made abortion legal in America. This is documented in the LDS “The First Presidencies General Handbook of Instructions” , pages 10-4 and 11-4, and was confirmed by LDS President and Prophet Gordan Hinckley, as reported by the LDS church’s official magazine The Ensign, Nov. 1998, page 1998. The LDS church says it is against abortion, but allows abortions on the same basis as the Supreme Court decision which allows abortion. Please read the following article. (Cooper Abrams, Bible Truth Web Site)

The following is an article written by Life for Utah, a group of ex-mormons who were excommunicated because they questioned and opposed the LDS church’s Pro-abortion position. The article quotes Prophet Hinckley’s offical comments concerning abortion.

A CHRISTIAN’S LOVE

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST taught a love and defense of others including little children, that some consider extreme in the world today. Consider, “…Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself…”(Matt.22:39) & “. . .Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matt.25:40) These fundamental teachings of CHRIST are a standard by which all Churches claiming to be Christian should be examined.

The Holy Bible clearly and convincingly teaches that a child in the womb is a moving intelligent being, (as verified by modern Fetology). When Mary announced to Elisabeth (who was pregnant with John the Baptist) that she 'Mary was to bare Christ, The Holy Bible records, “For 10, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.” (Luke 1:44, see also the pro–life video 'The Silent Scream Ph. 1-800-736-4567). The Holy Bible also clearly and convincingly teaches that no child comes into the womb by accident, Our Heavenly Father places us there. “Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?” (Job 31:15) “Know ye that the Lord He is God; it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves;” Psalms 100:3 “… .before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;” (Jer.1:5) Unlike all other creatures, we are created 'IN THE IMAGE OF GOD!!! (Gen.1:27)

Obviously a 'babe in the womb is divine in its origin and worthy to be defended and loved as we love our self (see Exodus 21:22,23) however, the Holy Bible also shows a history of another’s plan. He is described as being a deceiver and a murderer, (John 8:44) one who subtly suggests that a child in the womb is small and defenseless and should not be protected and loved as we love our self. His arguments today are voiced in words like “Im personally against abortion, but I think it should be a women’s choice” & “We make allowances for abortion but we prefer adoption”. You wouldnt expect a deceiver to demand that parents kill their children this would be too obvious, he would rather merely suggest that a chi ld’s life is not to be protected and defended as we would protect and defend our own.

There are those who have advanced in his plan to the point where They actually sacrifice their own children to him. The Highest act of Satanism is to kill as innocent a child as possible (Preferably in the womb). This ritual entails Praying and receiving a so–called 'super–natural instruction to kill a child, (see 'Satanists of America pg.2) thus child-sacrifice… Some have un–wittingly fallen into this practice, Satan has deceived them to the point that they believe God wants them to kill their own innocent child. Their reasoning for these sacrifices varies, but always boil down to their own self-centered desires. This is nothing new, the deceiver has had success with these murders in the past, even among those who devoutly believed they were Gods chosen people. “Yea they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters…” (Psalms 106:37-38) Some have even been so bold as to suggest that Abraham did the same thing when he was tested by God, with his son Isaac. The Bible however shows that this was a one time 'test and God never intended for Abraham to actually kill his own son, it would have broken Gods own laws. (Gen. 22) During the thousands of years history the bible covers, this test was never repeated.

Religion and Abortion Facts
Fact; There is no law in America which requires religions to allow abortions or maintain members who participate in them.

Facts; The official Church Policy of the Catholic Church (which many regard as the longest existing Christian church) opposes all abortions. Official Church policy of the Jehovah’s Witnesses opposes all abortions. The Baptists are autonomous (meaning each congregation has some freedom in the decisions over moral policy). After interviewing several pastors in different (LDS Abortion Continued in my next reply)

LDS Abortion continued…

major Utah religions, (please take no offense if yours is not listed here) all condemn abortions as a violation of Christ’s command that these little ones are to be loved as we love ourselves and what we do to one of the least of these, it is the same as doing it to Christ. These refuse to compromise with the deadly new morality of these final days.

Fact is; 75 percent of Utah is LDS 'Mormon (60 minutes interview with President Gordon Hinckley April 7,1996.) Recently President Gordon

B. Hinckley for the first time publicly announced the current position of the LDS Church on Abortion; “While we denounce it, we make allowance in such circumstances as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have serious defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth. But such instances are rare, and there is only a negligible probability of their occurring. In these circumstances those who face the question are asked to consult with their local ecclesiastical leaders and to pray in great earnestness, receiving a confirmation through prayer before proceeding.” (Exact quote from The Ensign Nov.1998 pg.71 see also The First Presidencies General Handbook of Instructions pages 10-4 & 11-4)

In review of this statement we see that first, Mr. Hinckley denounces abortions and in the same breath makes allowances for what he denounces. Next he lists 5 cases (i.e. 1.rape 2.incest 3.Jeopardy to the life of the Mother 4. Jeopardy to the health of the mother. 5.Severe deformity.)

Remembering that only God can place a child in the womb for whatever purpose is known to him and that the purpose of an abortion is to bring forth a dead child, we ask, would Jesus tell a woman he allows them to kill a totally innocent child because someone injured them by rape or incest? Many Mormons argue devoutly for abortions where the mothers life is at risk, (while at the same time ignoring the other four cases their church allows) is it loving the child as she loves herself for a mother to ensure that her child dies because her life is at risk? Wouldn’t the council of other Christian Churches that if you are determined that the child must come forth do not kill it first, but rather bring it forth alive and give it every chance to live, uphold loving as we love ourselves? HEALTH is a term used by the abortion industry to uphold an abortion for virtually any medical or psychological reason. Roughly 95 percent of all abortions in Utah and nationwide are done using Therapeutic (Health) as a reason, In 1997 Utah had 3,054 of 3,140 total. (source; Utah Dept. Of Health, Bureau of Vital Records ph. 801–538–6301 free technical report). To those in the know, it is incredible that Mr. Hinckley would include health as a case for abortions his church allows. Would Jesus tell a mother he allows her to kill her innocent child because her health may be at risk?

Mr. Hinckley next makes allowances for a mother to kill her child if it is known to have serious defects, and he claims that the doctors know the child will not survive beyond birth? We ask, would Jesus tell a woman he allows her to kill her child now, because it may not survive 9 months? Is it loving The Child as our self? Is this how Jesus would have you treat the least of these? This is not a new concept, euthanasia (The concept that only the Healthy have a right to live as long as they will live) was also taught by Hitler and others who for their own purposes ignore the teachings of Christ in preference to their own. Amazingly, Mr. Hinckley suggests that people pray to God and receive a 'confirmation before proceeding. Would God give the confirmation that a parent should kill their own innocent child? Knowing that this has never happened and is strictly forbidden by the Holy Bible, isnt it obvious where Mormons are getting their instructions to kill their children from? Of course Mormons believe that Mr. Hinckley will never lead the Church astray, sound familiar? History proves that blindly following such is a common and deadly mistake…

“MormonPro”,
Unfortunately, you aren’t much of a pro about the subjects you think you know a lot about…
You think you know a lot about Mormonism, but don’t.
You think you know a lot about Genesis and the Garden of Eden and the fall of Adam and Eve, but don’t.
You think you know a lot about the New Testament, but don’t.

I suggest you read the Bible more, and spend time here less. Maybe you’ll learn something by reading it and thinking about what you read–in the Bible. Word for word, verse for verse–not just cherry picking.

This post may make you mad. I’m not trying to do that–just want you to know that all your talk is just fluff. You have been misinformed. Bye.

Hmmm I was fourth generation, LDS for 40 Years. Went on a 2 year mission, Taught Gospel doctrine for 5 years. Taught Elders Quorum for 7 years. Held many positions was a strong defender until the Lord reached out and showed me how misled Mormonism really is. As for the Abortion discussion above. Please feel free to call the Office of the LDS First Presidency at 18012401000 We have had many discussions with them. Ask them to read their official policy on abortion to you. Then we will see who knows what about Mormonism…

Hello all

Thought I would offer my 2 cents.🙂

I do not know what the " Official " LDS stance on abortion is, as I am not LDS.

I can tell you that I was a visitor ( several months ) on a LDS forum and the discussion of abortion came up more than once.

The offerings of many LDS members that did contribute to the " abortion discussion " were all over the board. Many were against it ( claimed the LDS leadership taught against it ). Many were pro choice ( claimed the LDS leadership did NOT have a stance on it and they were able to use their free agency in this regard.).
Some offered the LDS leadership taught against it unless in cases of rape, incest, or health of Mothers ).

I, being Catholic, was confused as to the seeming lack of an " official stance " considering the topic.

In addition, Planned Parenthood came up more than once as well and I was SHOCKED to see so much LDS support for this organization.

At any rate, just thought I would share my experience.

BTW, It is probably important to note that I was warmly welcomed from the LDS folk as a Catholic ( by most ) and was treated with much respect as I shared my perspectives with them. They, in return, spent alot of time and effort sharing their perspectives with me.

Peace,
CJ

MormonPro,
I am not impressed with your background. You evidently never had the guidance of the Holy Ghost in all of that LDS experience, which means you were on the fringe of understanding what was going on. (That can easily happen to fourth generation LDS–never experience a conversion.)

If you had gone from being less charitable in Mormonism to how you seem to be now, then it would have been a step in the right direction, since evidently Mormonism didn’t guide you toward charity, but your actions here are definitely uncharitable, so you seem to be treading the same water. It has to start from inside of you. Of course the faith of your fathers is not going to ring true to you if you have not charity. You are then but “sounding brass, and a tinkling cymbal.”

I hope that even within Catholicism, you may find what CJ and other Catholics whom I have “met” or conversed with, have: Love for humankind, a sense of brotherhood, and if you feel like you have an enemy, then applying Christ’s teaching to “love your enemy.” Peace to you.
