In my office there are many muslims whom I have become very fond of lately. They seem like great people and I am starting to really enjoy their company. I love talking about our differences in beliefs regarding the bible and quaran… I often take the quaran from our book shelf and speak about it with them. But I refuse to take out the bible before them and speak of that. That I reserve to myself.

But there is a big problem now. The athiest in my office often listen to our conversations and have begun to but in and say some terrible antichristian things… It’s not the muslims but it is the athiest which have been abusive to me so much that I often leave work very depressed everyday.

Imagine you’re a demon hanging around your office. I’m sure there are a few doing just that.

On the one hand there is a single Christian who is carrying on a friendly debate with Moslems, who seem to respect your belief in the Abrahamic God, despite your differences. On the other hand, there is a bunch of atheists who have no concept of this God whatsoever, and whose inner being is threatened by such talk, by either side.

The last thing a demon would want is your talk influencing his carefully guarded atheists. So you’re being discouraged. I think you need to pray that God will give any demonic interference a hard time.

In addition, I think you need to start dragging out the Bible, in a careful way. The devil hates Scripture, but knows it very well. God speaks through Scripture, and if you quote it, or read it, you will probably find the atheists have an innate grudging respect for the Word which they won’t have for your personal opinion.

Frankly you’re in a ticklish situation. Do you have any fundamentalist Christians in your office? If you do, you’re going to find unexpected opposition as a Catholic coming from them, once you start quoting Scripture, just as you seem to be winning over the atheists.

I am not sure if I could help but here it goes. I once had a palestiinian, moslem friend in university. She came from a well to-do family. She was probably the best person I ever met then. However, I am a christian and deeply committed to Our Lord…He is first in my life. We happily exchanged our views; in one instance we got so excited about defending our beliefs that we had to stop.

What I am trying to say is that you should always defend your views with a considerate amount of respect; it would be like explaining something new to a small child. We never got defensive or angry but respected each other very much. These things take time to understand, but you should never feel afraid or ashamed to point your views either using the Bible or other documents that can support your beliefs.

As for the atheists and for all others who have a great misunderstanding of the CC; these people will prove to be your greatest adversaries. They try to diminish your faith by making you feel guilty for the wrongdoings of the CC…past or present. One of their most useful tactics is the Pedophile Priests, and the cultish use of images (fundamentalists love using this one).

Be strong and unafraid, yet be kind and humble. People listen to those who give them an ear and respect those who are confident in their practice of their faith. Love thy neighbor as yourself.

There is a certain arrogance associated with atheists in modern Britain. Some of them it seems think that they are better than believers because they are so ‘enlightened’.
Living the faith can be difficult in this country and witnessing the faith, like your doing, more so and I commend you for that.
Some atheists are going to say anti-Christian things especially when the topic of faith or religious morals comes up, I think they feel threatened, just look at the national secular society and their dogmatic statements on freedom from religious influence. Please know that you are not alone there are people of faith, Catholics, other Christians, your Muslim friends etc. in this country. Its just we tend to hear atheists more loudly these days.

And finally, as you know, there is Christ:

"If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (John 15:18-19)

Don’t forget: most Muslims are born into the faith while most Atheists are made atheists.

In other words, the Muslims are Muslim because they were born in a Muslim family and possibly in a country where Islam is both dominant and the law.

Most Atheists started as Christians until something drove them from the faith. Often times, there is pain of some sort associated with it.

Personally, I would ask them why they feel the need to attack Christianity and not Islam.

I think the old addage about keeping “politics and religion” out of the work place is sound advice!! Someone is always going to get ticked off and it invites these kind of nut jobs into conversations, things get heated, and the atmosphere gets awkward. I have to bite my tongue a lot. Sometime I’ve said something and got smacked down for it. And I want to puke when I see co-workers reading Dan Brown novels and talking about how wonderful the Da Vinci Code is, etc. Puke o rama…Religion and politics are a bad brew at work!

Yes, but I presume that the “terrible antichristian things” the atheist is saying go far beyond expressing the opinion (as he has a right) that “Jesus was not God.”
Moslems are supposed to give great honour to Jesus and Mary. They believe in Mary’s perpetual virginity and that Jesus was conceived by the power of God’s Spirit, that Jesus taught nothing but God’s Truth and that Jesus will sit in judgement on all men after their deaths.A truly believing and practising Moslem would be horrified at any insult or blasphemy (as they understand it) against Jesus or Mary and would certainly not take part in such talk himself.

If I heard an atheist saying terrible blasphemies against Moses or Isaiah, I wouldn’t stay silent simply because I’m not a Jew and because Moses and Isaiah were mere men and prophets.And I certainly wouldn’t join in the blasphemies.

If at the end of the day, you don’t feel good about your work environment, then maybe you should stop the religious discussions, or at the very least, take them somewhere private where the atheists are not around.

I’m curious to know, what sort of things did the athiests say about Jesus that made you feel bad.

Why should religious discussion be marginalised like this? If a man were discussing other aspects of his life, like his wife or his children, and a single man began to but in and say some terrible antifamily things would you tell the man with a family not to discuss things like that at work or at the very least, take them somewhere private where the single people were not around? I hope not!

To say that we should not discuss our faith, part of who we are as people, that we should hide or it leave it at home or check it at the door when we get to work is not the way to live.
