It is actually more complicated than that, since it involves his soon to be wife, who currently lives in Russia. But that is interesting though, I didn’t know you could switch rites.
Technically, one doesn’t switch rites, merely which Church Sui Iuris one is enrolled in; One is of the same rite as one’s church of enrollment.

Then he wouldn’t be Orthodox, which is what he seems to want.

Making the EC a halfway house for ‘want-to-be’ Orthodox does not work. Sooner or later they will move on and the EC will be misused once again.
Hesychios,
I concede maybe the OP wants to be Orthodox. However, I personally know several people who are Eastern Catholic and they are not ‘want to be Orthodox.’ They are Eastern Catholic because of the spirituality and the treasures of the East, and they want to remain Catholic. It seems, to me, a bit offensive to call the Eastern Catholic Churches halfway houses.
God Bless,
Pakesh

Here’s an idea: mind your own business and let your friend work it out for himself. It doesn’t sound like he’s unaware of the differences, so he must have put some thought into this. If it were me I’d tell you to bugger off.
Wow does that work for conversions both ways or is it just Catholics converting to Orthodoxy that should tell their “friends” to bugger off.

Chuck
