There is this girl I am trying to Convert (For my own reason and I’m not telling) and she is Seventh-day adventist. I was wondering if anyone knew of any apologetical books deseigned with converting Seventh-day adventist in mind? Thank you (Ahead of time) and please pray for her to discover the Catholic truth. And does anyone know why Ellen White didn’t like the Catholic Church in the First place (not madatory to answer)?

Remember…you don’t convert anyone, the Holy Spirit does; what this means is that much prayer is required, so don’t forget to do it.

To my knowledge there are no good books on the SDA Church from a RC perspective, let alone apologetics books. EGW was largely a product of her time, many if not all the protestant religions in the 1800’s were fervently anti-catholic. While most have toned it down a lot, the SDA’s have a hard time doing that since they have eleveated EGW to the status of a prophetess.

Are there any issues that you want to deal with specifically with your friend?

Things mainly:
1)They say the soul sleeps and knows nothing (they don’t belvieve that you go toheaven till Christ comes again.
2)Ellen Whites statues as prophetess
3)Things that we do not beleive that Mary is (i.e. a diety among many)
4)…Well I was never that knowladgable about their theology, is there anything else I need to bring up (other than the obvious jewish Sabbath and Sunday, and their anti-christ thing which people have already helped me with)

Have you talked with Adventistnomore yet? He’s currently enrolled at an Adventist university, and is exceedingly well versed in their theology and practices. If you PM him (or invite him to this thread), I’m sure he could help you greatly.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Ryan. 🙂

First the bad news…

There is very little Cathoic material aimed directly at Seventh-day Adventism (ironic, beause too much Adventist material seems to have Catholicism in mind, :p)

The issue with finding good apologetics materials to use for the evangelization of Adventists is, quite frankly, very few of us ever return to the Catholic Church. There are a few of us on the forums who have, but we are plenty few. 😛 Anyone could write apologetics materials directed against the teachings of faith group, but it can be difficult to be successful in evangelizing adherents because a faith is so much more than simple doctrines. Adventism especially is a culture, an experience, a worldview.

I think all of us who have attempted to share our Catholic faith with our friends realize that Catholicism is true, but by no means obvious/simple. Many Christians reject Catholicism because they are sure it is false. Fewer reject it because they are SURE they have the entire truth, and believe an element of that truth is that Catholicism is the most sinister religion birthed into the world. Welcome to Adventism. 🙂

I would also add that the Adventist apologetic is much more developed and complex than most non-Adventists imagine, most surprisingly in the field of early patristics. This is in part because of the group’s stress on education. My journey was made all the more difficult because i was so well-read in Adventist scholarship.

“You” are trying to convert her for “your” reasons. That sounds almost dubious.

Expose the truth to her; pray very sincerely and with a contrite heart; and let God do the rest.

I apologize for sounding dubious. I like the girl and I don’t want to have to wake up each morning and go through the day worring if she is going to heaven and hell.

It’s amazing, & depressing, to hear of all the gaps in the Catholic book-reading market - Protestants have written some good books on Islam, on SDAism, the JWs, Mormonism, Christian Science, and other movements: but Catholics seem to go in more for books about Protestantism-in-general.

For “soul-sleep”, A. A. Hoekema’s book “The Four Major Cults” is very useful; especially for his examination of the Biblical arguments. It helps the JWs & SDAs have so much doctrine in common - an argument against one of the two, can be an argument against both.

Hoekema was Calvinist, but this does not affect his discussion of the weaknesses in the SDA argument from the Bible.

“Soul-sleep” is also called Thnetopsychism, annihilationism, and mortalism - which helps, if one is searching for them. ##
