Converts: when did you start discussing becoming Catholic?

after years of thinking and going here to there, becoming an atheist, going with protestants, reading and visiting buddhist temple, four years ago i thoughed about, contacted a catholic church in my city and then somehow quited the whole thing, forgat about it complitely… Then about half a year ago, i went to a buddhist temple, and got interested about religion, read about protestant, ortohodox and prayed for Jesus to lead me where he wants me to go, the last thing in my mind was catholic but I don’t know what to say,

Always thinking about catholic i hated the its moral theology, so i didn’t want to get involved… but now i just think it is God who is in RCC and who tells the faiths and morals… I met with a very nice Opus Dei priest who told me more about the faith and gave me an impression of absolute saint that he is, (of course not a real saint but saint like), and read from JPII, Benedictus XVI, Thomas Merton, and one nun of my own country and became convinced, even though many things in catholic morals are hard for me to accept especially things about sex, i now try to keep what God wants me to keep…

I am still on the process of becoming a catholic though, I started discussing about it about 2,5 months ago, I say the rosary daily and try to keep up with the faith… But i am sure it is the right one given to us by God

I’m still waiting to be contacted as to when the RCIA classes begin.

The simplest explanation: I just feel drawn to the Catholic Church than any of the Protestant denominations I’ve seen. Gut instinct, if you will.

First, I am thrilled you are looking to learn more about becoming Catholic. Welcome home.

Keep going to Mass and check out the weekly bulletin. Most RCIA classes start in October.

May God bless you on your journey! 🙂

I’m glad no one gave me grief over my reason for wanting to convert. I should’ve added that I’ve been to a Mass or two (as a visitor) and liked it. The whole feel of it appeals to me.

I thought it was September. I’m just waiting for them to contact me. I am not comfortable just showing up.
May God bless you on your journey! 🙂
Thank you. 🙂 Believe me, I need all the prayers I can get. 😦

Well, don’t stop now! 🙂 Attend Mass as if you already were confirmed; every Sunday at least. (Of course I am sure you know not to receive Holy Communion yet.) Also, it is more likely that the RCIA leader will not forget to invite you if they see you at Mass frequently.

Of course it is different in different parishes. In the parish where I was confined they started in October but lasted more than a year until the following Easter. (I started in October 2003 and was confirmed at Easter in 2005.)

Do not be afraid to just “show up”. Believe me, people LOVE IT when a person arrives unexpectedly at an RCIA class. Additionally, I would hate to think that you did start your RCIA class because someone accidently lost your contact information.

You are most welcome. May God continue to bless you. 👍 :gopray2:

My wife and I are both converts from the Baptist church (I grew up Episcopal until 1999 - when we got married). We began RCIA in September 2006, and finally came into the Church in February 2008. We didn’t tell anyone until about a month into the RCIA process. It didn’t bother my family in the least. My grandmother was Catholic, and I have some cousins who are Catholic. Her parents kinda bristled at it (all of her family is Baptist), but eventually they backed off. I don’t really know if they really accept it to this day, but if they don’t, they don’t make it an issue with us. They have been to both of our child’s baptisms as well as our confirmation. When I tell someone I’m Catholic, I sometimes get a funny reaction, but I expect it being here in Mississippi. Only about 2% of our population are Catholic.

The Mass is open to the public, even though reception of Holy Communion is for Catholics who are in a state of grace only.

Showing an interest by coming regularly to Mass will also increase your chances of being contacted for RCIA, as well as giving you a bit of a head start with learning the prayers, etc. 🙂

Quite a long journey! Praise God for your return 🙂 :).

Peace be with you. I have been an RCIA Instructor for about 20 years now. It requires that I meet with the class on most Sundays of the year at a particular Mass, which is followed by Scripture study and then instruction. The sacrifice is so worth it and your stories only reinforce my feelings of thanksgiving to the Lord for allowing me to be involved. Thank you for your wonderful and personal sharing. 🙂
