I say that we could discuss and debate this all day, and forever and not really get anywhere. Until you get to the root of the problem, which is AUTHORITY, you will not be at peace with any answer.

My authority used to be the Bible alone, of course as it pertains to the pastors interpretation of it, and other protestant thinkers.

Today my authority is Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition from the one church Christ built, the pillar and foundation fo the Truth.
2 thess 2:15/ 1 tim 3:15

Without the pillar and foundation of the Truth and her Sacred Tradition, we wouldn;t even have the Bible as we know it today.
Start with the root and foundation of your fiath and all else will follow if you have the real pillar and foundation of the Truth.
God is my Authority. I don’t really expect to “get anywhere” from people debating this, if you mean all coming to an agreement. What I do expect (And I think it’s a reasonable thing to hope for) is that people will post different ideas and what they have to back them up. Giving me many starting points for further study and prayer.
Nothing that any man or woman can say will convince you. This is a matter of the heart, since the eyes can both deceive and be deceived. The Holy Spirit is the One to be sought out and to be trusted. The Holy Spirit illumines hearts, rather than the eyes or ears.

But, since we are weak, read John 6 word for word. Read 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. Read the early church fathers’ (Irenaeus, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr) writings on the Eucharist. Then, beg the Holy Spirit to guide you to all truth, no matter where it leads. Then, you will come to perfect knowledge.

Christ’s peace and a most Blessed and Holy Triduum and Easter to all.
I have been praying to be guided by the Holy Spirit in this for a very long time. While I doubt I’d be convinced by any one post, I still think that much study can be very helpful. God does not always simply hand out answers to individuals when the answers are already present on the earth to be found IF I only search them out. It’s the same when I teach my own child… I often make her find the answers herself, then those answers are all the more valuable to her.

I should also note that the vast majority of Christian denominations believe in the Real Presence. By numbers:

Those that believe in the Real Presence
Catholics - 1,120,000,000
Eastern Orthodox - 225,000,000
Oriental Orthodox - 72,000,000

Total - 1,417,000,000

Anglicanism - 77,000,000 (Some believe in the Real Presence, some do not)
**

Those that reject the Real Presence**
Protestantism (mainline) - 590,000,000
Pentacostalism - 105,000,000
Non-Trinitarian - 28,500,000
Restorationaism - 18,000,000

Total - 741,500,000

Total number of Christians - 2,235,500,000
Percentage of those that believe in the Real Presence - 63.38%
Percentage of those that reject the Real Presence - 33.17%
Percentage of Anglicans - 3.44%

Now, of course, I realize that this says nothing about whether the belief is actually true or not, but is a powerful indication of what the MAJORITY of Christians believe.
To your total of those that believe in the real presence, add about 80,000,000 Lutherans. Excellent post, btw.

Gah! Sorry about that, I even caught that myself and forgot to make the correction.

Read Rolltide’s “Early Church Fathers” posts. These ECFs were the first generation after the Apostles. Irenaeus was taught by Polycarp, who was a student of the Apostle John, the “beloved disciple”. The Eucharist is the belief and practice of those who gave their lives for the faith. I tend to believe them.

Nearly everyone loves the concept of Christ. It is the reality that troubles them.

A blessed Triduum and Easter to all.

I am glad you cleared that up. God is my authority also! we agree!

God started an institution called “the church” back in about 33ad, by the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ. Then Jesus ordained 12 ministers called “apostles”, and gave them His own mission and gave them the power to forgive sins of others, or not to. Jesus even breathd on them, yes God breathed on man for the second time in the history of the world. He also speaks through them, “he who hears you hears me”. This church is legislative, authoritative (matthew 18:16-20) and if you fail to hear it, you are as a heathen and a publican(anathema).

Therefore God’s authority is spoken not only through scripture, but also through the one church he started.

I’d like to hear from both Catholics and Protestants on this one. if you all debate it out, maybe I will see all sides better too.

I am completely unconvinced either way about real Presence, Transubstantiation, Symbolic etc. I Can’t really debate it cause I don’t know! I have some opinions on it, but since NO ONE seems to agree with me in any Christian Denomination, I have to assume I’m wrong. (I seriously doubt God told me as the first one since 33AD ;))

Here is where I currently stand. I believe:

*Jesus Said “Do This…” What was this? He had properly prepared for Passover meal and was having it with his disciples. Shouldn’t we be “Doing this” as closely to what Jesus Did as possible? I find both the Catholic (and some Protestants) practice of reciving individually and not part of a meal to not be much like what I read (there was discussion and fellowship that a group meal generally affords among other things). At the same time I don’t see how receiving corporately in the middle of a worship service as other protestants do it either (at least some unity is shown by the action but still not like what I read in scripture).

*Grape Juice and crackers are not a good idea unless unleavened Bread and Wine are unobtainable (Stranded on a desert island or something??). Fish crackers… Please NO! I also don’t like the recent trend to use white grape juice to represent Jesus Blood (Is your blood white? if it symbolic, at least have the symbols correct).

*This should be done with extreme carefulness to be sure you have examined your conscious and are truly right with God. He takes this seriously and so should we, regardless of the physical state of the “accidents”.

*No one who is not Baptized should receive. Period.

*Regardless of what I (or anyone else) believe happens DURING this, what really happens is what God makes happen.

So really my current state is that I’m not sure who is right and who is wrong, I see some things I’m sure are wrong, others I think are wrong but am not sure. I believe it is important and required of us. I believe that how God is Present in it is up to Him and a Mystery.

What say you?
I say you believe firstly because the Church says it. Know it well and try to understand it (even if it is still a Mystery).

There is a lot to say about your view as listed above. For Catholics, it does not just mean to “do in remembrance” because somebody has to do it in the correct way and that somebody should be instituted by Christ properly (Holy Orders) to be able to transform the bread and wine.

When we say bread and wine, the Apostles also knows how to do it because Christ told them how (not written in the Bible perhaps, because the New Testament is mostly there for “us to believe” and for “instructions on how to live Christian life”). Only the true Church knows how to do it correctly according to what Christ said how! If you want to know more details, i suggest you read the Catholic Canon about this.

Please don’t try to reinvent the wheel. See the Catholic’s side and you will see the BIG difference, how deep the Church’s faith is. Not to mention how apostolic it is. 😉

Well written! 👍

we also have to remember that Holy Communion can only be given by a priest to be valid.

we tell people they do not believe. this is an awsome witness of what God can do. others insisting on believing that is ok with Christ if they left His Church or not even bother to find what Church is this that Jesus talks about in the Bible and are doing their own thing without even questioning themselves. is it what God wants me to do. being in any church without regard for Christ’s wishes.

I disagree, as I think you’re putting the cart before the horse. The Church is a Church of witnesses. Everyone who is a Christian is a Christian because of the witness of others, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and through Our Lord. Syele won’t believe in the Eucharist simply from the authority of the Catholic Church because she (that’s right, isn’t it? Sorry - can’t remember) simply doesn’t believe in the authority of the Catholic Church!

Now, in my opinion, the Eucharist is the single best witness to the authority of the Catholic Church (not the other way around). It is the Catholic Church who rightly agrees with the Biblical witness; it is the Catholic Church who rightly agrees with the historical witness; it is the Catholic Church who has always taught and defended this belief in the face of so many heretics.

The fact that the early church fathers taught a belief exactly the same as the Catholic Church does today cannot be argued, except by the most semantic of our separated brethren. I know Syele’s been around for a while and almost certainly knows of the historical witness for the Eucharist. However, this witness is probably good enough in Syele’s eyes only to support the Catholic doctrine, rather than prove it beyond reasonable doubt. This is why I think we should concentrate on the Biblical witness. As I have tried to show in my previous post, I believe the Biblical witness on this matter to be conclusive - for those who actually already believe in the authority of the Biblical text, as I’m sure Syele already does.

Once a person believes in the witness of the Catholic teaching on the Eucharist, that is enough I think (well, almost) to show that one out of the Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran or Orthodox Churches must be true. Therefore, I think it is then prudent to point out the following from Cardinal John Henry Newman’s Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, from the Introduction (part 17):
One additional specimen shall be given as a sample of many others:—I betake myself to one of our altars to receive the Blessed Eucharist; I have no doubt whatever on my mind about the Gift which that Sacrament contains; I confess to myself my belief, and I go through the steps on which it is assured to me. “The Presence of Christ is here, for It follows upon Consecration; and Consecration is the prerogative of Priests; and Priests are made by Ordination; and Ordination comes in direct line from the Apostles. Whatever be our other misfortunes, every link in our chain is safe; we have the Apostolic Succession, we have a right form of consecration: therefore we are blessed with the great Gift.” Here the question rises in me, “Who told you about that Gift?” I answer, “I have learned it from the Fathers: I believe the Real Presence because they bear witness to it. St. Ignatius calls it ‘the medicine of immortality:’ St. Irenæus says that ‘our flesh becomes incorrupt, and partakes of life, and has the hope of the resurrection,’ as ‘being nourished from the Lord’s Body and Blood;’ that the Eucharist ‘is made up of two things, an earthly and an heavenly:’ [Note 21] perhaps Origen, and perhaps Magnes, after him, say that It is not a type of our Lord’s Body, but His Body: and St. Cyprian uses language as fearful as can be spoken, of those who profane it. I cast my lot with them, I believe as they.” Thus I reply, and then the thought comes upon me a second time, “And do not the same ancient Fathers bear witness to another {24} doctrine, which you disown? Are you not as a hypocrite, listening to them when you will, and deaf when you will not? How are you casting your lot with the Saints, when you go but half-way with them? For of whether of the two do they speak the more frequently, of the Real Presence in the Eucharist, or of the Pope’s supremacy? You accept the lesser evidence, you reject the greater.”
