I guess I don’t know the “theology” of what makes an online Mass beneficial, as I understand it going to a real Mass imparts graces but I’m not sure that applies to online Mass.

Obviously it’s not got the majesty of a real Mass but I’d like to know the reasons why you all think it’s a good thing to do

It can help facilitate prayer and help you to reflect on the mystery of the Eucharist / Gospel… which is always a good thing. Personally, I’ll probably replace Mass with praying an office plus the Mass readings.

Because the Mass is the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus for our redemption, and we keep the commandment to keep Sunday holy best by participating in the Mass. God is aware that we cannot participate physically in a Catholic Church at this time, and thanks be to Him that he allows us to still participate spiritually.

We are called to participate in the mass. We cannot directly, with our presence, but we can spiritually. Also, when parishioners are receiving communion, we can make an act of spiritual communion.

These are troubling times and we are called to do what we can.

One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
When you see a video of Mass, you are seeing an image of God Jesus Himself. Gazing on it and worshipping Him is better than anything else you could possibly be doing online.

For me, it is routine. I get VERY upset if my routine is interrupted, so online Mass has been therapeutic.

My spiritual reason is I can pray along and listen to the readings and homily and get fed spiritually in that way.

My secular reason is that Mass is one of my weekly events that keeps me on track and I don’t lose count of the days. In other words, it maintains a sense of normalcy.

But do whatever you like. You’re not sinning if you don’t watch Mass For Shut Ins

Certainly, if it’s possible we should go to mass at church. Talking about graces, I think if you wholeheartedly desire for it you’ll receive it. The option to have mass online, according to me, has as one of its purposes “to keep us in touch with God”

That’s precisely what I’m doing. I pray the LOTH daily, and tomorrow I will read the Mass readings and take a crack at singing the Propers (Gregorian chant), at the normal time of the Mass I usually attend, 11 am. I’ve done the introit Laetare in our choir before, so that one should be manageable. The Offertory might be more of a challenge but that’s part of the liturgy of the Eucharist. I’ll stick to the propers for the Liturgy of the Word (gradual, tract), plus the introit.

I’m not sure if I’m going to watch a Mass this weekend. I’ve never actually sat down and watched a televised Mass before but it seems kind of boring compared to being there. I’ll probably do some scripture reading and some prayers and watch a sermon or homily.

I’m hoping it will be as comforting as it was when I tuned into the live stream of the rosary on Thursday. It’s your own priest. It’s your own parish and you know its happening in real time.

The mass (The Eucharist) is all these, per the Catechism:
thanksgiving - eucharistein (1328), Lord’s Supper (1329), memorial (1330), Breaking of Bread (1329), Holy Sacrifice (1330), Sacred Mysteries (1330), Holy Communion - united to Christ (1331), sending forth ( missio ) of the faithful - The Mass (1332).
Manual of Indulgences, Concession 4
PAPAL BLESSING
A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly receive a blessing imparted either by the Supreme Pontiff to Rome and the World (Urbi et Orbi), or by the bishop to whose care the faithful are entrusted in accordance with Norm 7, 2° of this Manual, even if, because of reasonable circumstances, they are unable to be present physically at the sacred rite, provided that they follow it devoutly as it is broadcast live by television or radio.

We plan on getting ready for Mass as we usually would (fasting and dressing for it) and physically transforming the living room by moving the furniture and using dining room chairs.

I’ll give you five dollars if you watch one.

Watch it and find out? I had elderly relatives that watched Mass every Sunday on TV when they weren’t able to go. Obviously, it was meaningful to them. I like to think of it as being connected to all the other Catholics all over the world, who can’t go to Mass today.

Today I watched Mass on EWTN for the first time, I usually watch other things on EWTN just not the Mass until now. During the homily, the priest quoted St Clare of Assisi, St Thomas Aquinas and St Jacinta of Fatima. Wow, my kind of homily.

@po18guy

I have a question about online Masses. Is it okay if you watch the Mass later than
when it is celebrated LIVE or are you supposed to watch it LIVE as Mass is being
celebrated?

Good question! Since you are not physically there in either case, I would suspect that a later podcast or broadcast would be fine. Just allow yourself to be drawn into it, and I see little if any difference.

However, there are so many different masses being broadcast now, I should think that, with a little poking around, you could find one live.

Thanks for your reply @po18guy

I wasn’t sure if the Mass was still valid if I watched it when it was not LIVE although
I am watching a video of a LIVE mass - does that make sense?
