"cooperate with God's grace"

Most everytime I go to confession my parish priest says “continue to cooperate with God’s grace”

What exactly does that mean? I have my idea and I may ask him next time, but until then I wonder. What do you guys think this means? in a real life application - not a Bible verse

I don’t know if you know this, but the Bible IS a real life application. (James 1:22).

Yes I know that and I agree, but Jesus in the desert doesn’t apply to the situations in my life to allow me to gain a better understanding. (my divorce is a prime example)
 
Grace is given us both internally and externally. Externally, it is easier to see, as it manifests itself in the form of providential happenings in our lives that we did not expect or control. “Blessings” we usually call them. Internally, it requires discernment. The charisms are a definite grace from God. Gifts freely given to us (think of the parable of the talents Mt. 25:14-30). We received them freely and we are expected to give (use them) freely. The use of charisms is for the building up of the Church - for the sake of God the Father in His own right. Another example is the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Those fruits lead us closer to perfection, but none of this is automatic - we must submit to the Spirit, then endeavor, work and sacrifice in our cooperation with the graces we are given. We have the freedom to oppose that grace, but it is always counter-productive. God’s grace is our evidence of His will for our lives.
 
Thank you for your post and thoughts… I understand those words. Its finding that in my own life that I find a challenge

I read this in an article

“Our cooperation with God’s grace is needed though. Grace can be wasted if we do not recognize it for what it is, and cooperate in it’s action in our lives. Have you ever ignored the promptings of the Holy Spirit? Or felt strongly compelled to do something that kept nagging at you in the back of your mind, but you keep putting it off until it finally goes away? These are times when we fail to cooperate with God’s grace.”

What are your thoughts on this? How would I know if I “wasted” grace that God intended for me? I can say “Thy will be done” but I don’t get emails from God…wish I would 🙂
