Is the Coptic Church considered an Orthodox church? Do they have valid bishops and orders?

I am wondering because I studied Arabic for some time, and my teachers were Egyptian Coptic Christians. I’ve always wanted to know more, but the subject of religion didn’t often come up.

As far as I know, there is a Coptic Catholic Church and a Coptic Orthodox Church. Many of the Christian Churches in Ethiopia are Coptic and Aramic is used in many of them.

FYI: Copts are supposedly the original Egyptians, not Arabic Egyptians.

The Coptic Church is part of the Oriental Orthodox (not Eastern Orthodox) Communion. Yes, the Sacraments and Apostolic Succession are valid.

Yes. The Coptic CC is quite small, whereas the Coptic OC is quite large.

The Ethiopian Church is of the same Alexandrene liturgical family as the Coptic, and while it does, in a way, derive from the Coptic, it is totally distinct. The liturgical language of the Ethoipian Church is Ge’ez, (which is a Semitic language) whereas for the Coptic Church it is Coptic (which is not a Semitic language). The vernacular for the Ethiopian Church is mostly Amharic which itself is a derivative of Ge’ez, whereas the vernacular for the Coptic Church is mainly Arabic.

The majority of Egyptian Copts are not ethnically Arabs.

I erred as to the language used. It is Ge’ez and Amharic, although some Ethiopian congregations do use an Amaraic liturgy.

Is the Coptic Church in communion with Rome? And was it ever not in communion with Rome. Sorry, I just need a little bit of history lesson. I have a co-worker who is coptic and egyptian and is one of my best co-workers.

The Catholic Coptic Church is in communion with Rome, while the Orthodox Coptic Church is not.

PS I knew that about the Copts 🙂 My professors were very proud of their Coptic heritage 🙂

Thanks, javi. Another question, if you do not mind, and if you know the answer. Recently, a new Bishop from the Copts was elevated to Cardinal, is he the head of the Catholic Coptics?

I just read that St Mark founded the Coptics, and the head of the Coptics is seated at the Seat of St Mark. Is this the case or doest the Orthodox coptics claim the seat?

For that matter the majority of Egyptians are not ethnically Arabs. Put another way the majority of ancestors of the average Egyptian, Christian or not, are Copts (or native aboriginal Egyptian).

I thought that might have been the case but really wasn’t sure. In any case, though, no, neither the Copts nor the Ethiopians use Aramaic.

Yes. The Cardinal is the head of the Catholic Copts. And also yes, the Orthodox Copts claim the seat belongs to them. ( The Orthodox Copts regard the Catholic Copts as schismatic. )

You may know best, but there are Ethiopian Copts that do use an Aramaic Liturgy. I have heard this from an Ethiopian Copt.

One is either an Ethiopian or a Copt. Saying an Ethiopian Copt is like saying an Italian German.
 
Yes, I suppose another way of looking at an Ethiopian is as a “Copt-out . . .”
