Well the % of drug addicts in the USA has remained constant since before any drug was legal. So it’s either the war on drugs (which, lets face it, is a war on brown and black poor people) or welfare or something that hasn’t been suggested yet… oh, it could be single parent homes as those kids kill far more often than other poor kids who have 2 parents.

Your going back into the 1800’s with these stats??? Drugs were in this country the whole time. They became controlled/illegal in 1920, then much harsher laws in the late 60’s/ early 70’s FYI. Welfare in the ? 50s?

I’d love to see murder rates first half of last century compared to 70’s and on (when the war on drugs got up and running)I’ld LOVE IT!!!

Oh yeah, I’d also bet there is a bump during alcohol prohibition.

• If that is true how come the murder rate and the crime rate is so high in the USA?
• Are you saying it could be even worse?
• Is American society so fundamentally different from other civilized societies and this is the reason why crime rates are so high?
• And if so why?

Break down murder and crime rates and states harsh on gun laws vs. lax on them.

They were high right through from 1915 until they began to fall in 1951. This then continued through the fifties before the significant increases from 1962, and the peaks in the 1980s. It has now fallen back to the 1962 level.

It is the wars between drug dealers, sometimes it is the customers who are trying to stiff them.

There are two vested interest in maintaining the illegality of drugs the cops and the suppliers together they keep the prices high.

Yes, but why should we allow them to make the rules. Pharmacists don’t shoot it out with each other or their customes , and their customers generally don’t rob them at gunpoint. (because they can call the POLICE for PROTECTION. With the drug war no one can or will call the police, hence people are their own police, and robbers target them b/c they know they can’t call the police.

And we have as many guns per capita in Canada as you guys in the States.

I think we had less than 50 handgun deaths last year. The USA had over 10,000.

They can be used for good or bad, just as knives, planes, vehicles, blunt objects and so on are. How many people are saved each year because of guns? How often do you see those articles? Virtually never, because of the media. How about this one …

Was the tragety in CT done on a school grounds? Are teachers there allowed to carry firearms to protect the children? If not the gov’t is responsible IMO.

I was just musing on the stats, and wondering why America compared to all countries, and especially to countries with comparable rates of gun ownership has such a horrendous record of gun violence and violence in general.

It’s a serious question: why do you think there is so much violence in your society?

I only live a couple of hours drive away from America, but we seem worlds apart on so many things, and yet so similar too.

For instance, while many people own many guns we don’t really talk about them. You get the occasional bumper sticker, but people just keep quiet about their guns. We have more of a hunting culture than gun culture, and the rifle is seen as a tool for a purpose - hunting, and not hunting as an excuse to shoot guns.

Maybe I’m wrong - I often am.

Although I think the government is partly culpable, we cannot, under any circumstances, take away responsibility from the disgusting human being that committed this atrocity.

I do agree that the government’s main function is to protects its citizens. Since we are our government, it’s our duty to do so. The .gov is infringing on the most basic of human rights.
