So – if I have a medicine that causes stomach upset unless consumed with food or milk, the milk sufficient to take the medicine comfortably (less than a glass) would not break the communion fast. Do I have that right?

Yes, absolutely. Anytime that food actually constitutes “medicine” it does not break the fast, and that includes times when food or drink is necessary to make the medicine effective or avoid adverse side effects.
