Could Islam possibly be called a denomination of Christianity?

This is an interesting question that i came across and i was hoping i could get a Muslim to answer for me 🙂

Though they obviously do not claim to be Christian it is in interesting concept. They are believers of the God of Abraham (but not Jewish, like Christians); They believe that Jesus is the Messiah (like Christians but not like the Jews); They believe in their own Holy Book written by their Prophet as instructed by God (like Mormons?); they do not believe in the Trinity, thus do not believe in the divinity of Jesus (like Jehovah’s Witness?). It is an interesting thought. I wonder what any Muslims have to say about this.

If I am mistaken please kindly correct me 🙂

Do they believe that Jesus is the Messiah? I never ran into that in my investigation into Islam. They do believe that Jesus is a prophet.

But the answer to your question is No.

They do not believe that Christ is God and they do not believe in the Trinity, two very basic beliefs of Christianity.

What ByzCath said. 👍

Like i said, correct me if i’m wrong.
But my understanding was that they believed that Jesus was the Messiah of the Jewish faith.

Does that mean that Jehovah’s Witness’ are not Christian? My understanding is that the JW teaching is that Jesus was God’s first creation and that he was not God himself. Thereby explaining their beliefs against the Trinity.

Like I said, never ran into that. I think it would also be presumptuous for a different religion to state that of another religion. The Jews did not except Jesus as the Messiah because he did not come to be an Earthly king which they believe the Messiah to be. So how would that change for Islam to say that He was?

Bingo! They are a cult. Any group that denies the divinity of Christ or the Trinity is not Christian. Today due to political correctness we no longer state this that loudly but it is a fact the two of the very basic Christian beliefs are the divinity of Christ and the Trinity.

This also means that Morons are not Christians.

When you dig deeper, groups that lack these two basic beliefs also hold to other non-Christian ideas.

The late Catholic historian Hellaire Helloc said that Islam began as a heretical sect of Christianity. Just putting that out there.

That is one thought that is out there, I believe it was Arianism, but I think the key word here is “began” as it make radical changes such as denying the divinity of Christ

All i thought was that if Muslims believed that Jesus was the Messiah then that made them more like Christians and less like Jews (in respect to Abraham originating Faiths).

I was never so bold as to say that, but its true. I suppose there is a difference in saying “We’re Christians” and actually being Christian.

Anyways, it was just an interesting thought…

To answer the original question, no, I don’t think so.

To answer a secondary question in the thread, regarding Muslims believing Jesus to be the Messiah–the original poster was correct to begin with. Muslims do believe Jesus was the Messiah, though their consideration of the meaning of Messiah is different than what Christians believe it means. I think the OP said as much.

The Arabic word المسيح (al-maseeH) is the equivalent of “Messiah.”

Read the following translation of a passage from the Qur’an, 4:171-172. It should prove that Muslims do believe Jesus deserves the title Messiah, and also what Muslims believe about him.

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, “Three”; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

**Never would the Messiah disdain to be a servant of Allah **, nor would the angels near [to Him]. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant - He will gather them to Himself all together.

:rotfl:

Oh, I don’t know…I know some morons who, despite that, I think are Christian…👍:rotfl:
:eek::eek::eek:
I pray forgiveness from our Mormon users out there, this was a typo and not meant to be disrespectful in any way.

Only if one want’s to call Christianity an “abberation of Judaism”…which most Christians would object to I would think.

Islam has some of it’s roots in Judaism and Christianity…but it is a separate faith tradition.

While I agree Islam is not a denomination of Christianity. The Early Church Father St. John of Damascus seemed to believe it began as an early Heresy. Atleast according to the book I’m reading by Catholic University of America Press on him vol. 37 of the Early Church Fathers.
Peace be with you

I am not sure what qualifies a religious people to be a denomination of Christianity.
However, this is what I notice about Islam.
  1. It is built on the common denominator of ‘protestant’ Christians who existed before Mohammad: the belief that Jesus is a Prophet and Messiah.
  2. It claims to have several biblical foundations and to have the true Faith not only of Abraham, but also of Jesus Christ.
  3. Mohammad claims to be the fulfillment some biblical prophecy.
  4. Islam was originally known to Christians as Mohammedanism. And this was known to rise up from a region (Arabia) which was knows as the ‘mother of heresies’ by Christians of the 3rd century on according to Catholic Encyclopedia.

There were no “protestant” groups who existed before Mohammad, they were heretics who believed in heresy.

Except for the out right denial of the divinity of Christ.

These prophecies are either the prophecices of Christ’s coming, or of Him sending us another after He leaves which Christians believe is the Holy Spirit.

Calling it Mohaddedanism does not denote that it was believed to be Christian in nature.

Yes, in a way, it is a Christian heresy, in basically the same manner in which early(i.e. ancient Roman) Gnosticism was a Christian heresy. Gnostics had a tradition that seems to have predated their exposure to Christianity, and they had services and rituals of their own. Muslims who know their faith accept everything about Jesus and Mary that we do, except that He was crucified and resurrected and that He was the Son of God. Strangely enough, some of them feel that Jesus will come back and rule with the Mahdi. However, Islam takes a step further than, say, Mormonism by not only rejecting Trinitarianism but denying that He was divine at all (while still acknowledging the Virgin Birth). Meanwhile, the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that Jesus was actually Michael the Archangel, so one might be able to say that they are more far away from true Christianity than are Muslims, yet they are still associated with Christians.
