Remember the old Joke?

“I once went to see a brawl and a hockey match broke out”

Football, Baseball & Basketball ~ YES
Soccer & any kind of Hockey ~ NO!

But Congrats on your team. Maybe my Lakers will win in the finals too.
Melanie, did you know that in the rest of the world besides the US, soccer IS football.

Personally I like Rugby myself.

😃

I have to admit that rink-side seats can be cool, but not because of the game, but because you can really get into it, stand up, pound on the plexiglass (or whatever it is) and be just as insanely medieval as the two teams. It seemed to me like a jousting match on ice.

OK, let’s get back to beating up on the likes of Finrock. 😉

Yeah, I know that they don’t know what real football is, not even in Australia. Those poor folks have to watch soccer and try to find a way to be excited about it. It’s just pitiful. 😉

Perhaps, and maybe we have got it wrong and the whole rest of the world has it right?

Whatever, I just find American football very boring, I have seen games where it took 45 minutes to play 5 minutes on the clock, too many time outs.😉 and other delaying tactics…but I do have ADHD.

Naw, we’re right, everyone else is wrong, it’s the American Way!! 😃

The best football games are the ones that are not televised. All the time outs and delays are mostly for TV. I agree with you that all the delays can be tiresome. But I love the game itself.

God Is Gracious,
OK. Here we go.

I assume you quoted him because you like what he said. He was teaching you, then, I would suppose. **A prophet was/is supposed to be a teacher of truth.
**
So my geometry teachers were prophets then?

Pickguard,

I am not aware that the office of “apostle” continued beyond the lifetimes of John and Paul in the original church Christ had established. I suppose that the twelve would have wanted to ordain new apostles just as Matthias was ordained to replace Judas, but it doesn’t seem evident that they were able to continue doing that beyond the time of Paul.
Your apostles do not meet the criteria for replacement as outlined in Mattias replacement of Judas. So it doesn’t seem evident that the LDS have ever been able to do that.

Who had the word first?? Just wondering.

In order I like football, hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball/golf/tennis. I’ve never seen rugby but I have been to a polo match that was interesting even though I couldn’t follow it to save my life.

Never been to a polo match myself, I have rich “horsey snob” friends that are into show-jumping and dressage.

Dressage is really cool, they kind of make the horses dance. Show jumping I really enjoy watching as well.

I used to be into Rodeo, but now that I am crippled I can only watch any sport. I’m thinking about looking into wheelchair sports.

Yeah, I know that they don’t know what real football is, not even in Australia. **Clearly, you have never seen Australian rules football. Now there’s an exciting game 👍 Or even better, when the Aussies play Irish Gaelic football players in a hybrid agreed rules series. ** Those poor folks have to watch soccer and try to find a way to be excited about it. It’s just pitiful. 😉But at least it qualifies as 'foot’ball, i.e. feet actually come in contact with the ball for most of the game. Unlike the inexplicably named American football. 😉 Plus, soccer games are mercifully over in 90 minutes 😃

Zaffiroborant,
I would say that Acts 4:33 gives the criteria for an apostle after the original twelve, since Paul was an apostle and didn’t “have company with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us.” (1:21) Acts 1:22 is similar to Acts 4:33, in that they say that an apostle is called to be a “witness” of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Acts 4:33 also uses the words “with great power.”

Some people don’t feel the Spirit when they listen to modern LDS apostles such as Elder Jeffrey R Holland, who recently gave a talk bearing witness of Christ’s passion and resurrection. But many people do, and feel the power of that witness. (Anyone can easily find a link to the talk.) I would say the difference depends on each person’s own heart’s receptivity and inclination, not on the speaker.

Apostles and prophets are called to teach and bear witness of spiritual truths revealed by God, and bear witness to all the world of Him who is the Way, the Truth, and the Light.

Actually I have seen Australian rules football which is why I mentioned it. Better than soccer but …
But at least it qualifies as 'foot’ball, i.e. feet actually come in contact with the ball for most of the game. Unlike the inexplicably named American football. Plus, soccer games are mercifully over in 90 minutes
Football includes a variety of kicks for both scoring as well as at other times, so the name of the game is not so inexplicable. 😃 And football is over in 90 minutes as long as there are no TV cameras nearby. 😉

In the end, it’s great that everyone has an exciting pastime they enjoy!

LOL! Nice. Parker D was being obtuse and, as he tends to do, sow doubt. Everyone saw through his tactic, however.

I was trying to sow thinking using sarcasm. Sarcasm often backfires, but I was also deflecting the criticism to myself, since I feel just fine about being criticized. On that score, if anyone wants to fire away, they can fire away at me, as has already happened.

At least a few people have read some of the other things I wrote, and thought about them. I accomplished that objective. (Even if it were just one person, it would be worth it.)

Have a good day, all. I suppose that you all will.

P.S. Again, the church you belong to is fine. Joseph Smith was a prophet and Thomas S Monson is a prophet to the people who choose to read their words, feel the Spirit in their messages and teachings, and see them as such. Others will simply turn away and scoff, and that is their choice. It’s fine with me.

Here’s a link regarding a statement a well known Catholic Apologist has made about Joseph Smith and the theory of The Great Apostasy.

IN SEARCH OF “THE GREAT APOSTASY”

In closing, if God is truely what He claims to be, "The same yesterday, today and forever, then there’s no possible way that The Great Apostasy happened because He NEVER CHANGES so God wouldn’t have abandoned one group of people for another.
GREAT ARTICLE! I think all the LDS’s on this thread and everywhere should read it with an open mind, and with honesty. It’s truly enlightening 👍

RUGBY! YAY! I love rugby, too! Too bad it’s not easily available to watch in the US. You have to pay through the nose for alternative sports channels :(

P.S. Again, the church you belong to is fine.
If you believed were true, what was the purpose of Mormonism at all? I don’t think you’re being entirely honest about your opinion here, or if you are, why don’t you convert to Catholicism - because you are right - the Church we belong to IS fine - the finest thing this side of heaven. :)😃

I’ve never seen rugby
Boy are you missing out! It puts soccer/baseball/American football/ hockey to shame. It’s like an 80 minute brawl. It’s probably the closest thing to the original Olympian melees.

Personally, I think Amercan football is more a derivateve of rugby than soccer. The rules are much more obviously in line with those of rugby, as is the point structure (although not strictly the same). But if you were to take an American football game (I keep using that term to avoid confusion), take out the time outs and forward passes, take out the pads and helmets, take out the slow, constant stoppage of play, add in the toothless smiles of Hockey and WHAM you have the best sport in the world! 😃

Go for it, I have a friend who plays sled/sledge hockey he loves it.
