Could Suicide Bombers be the Saints of the 21st Century?

They are willing to die for what they believe in. That is a requirement for sainthood.

They are doing what they do so others will benefit. That’s another requirement for sainthood.

They believe that God has chosen them for that mission. That’s another requirement for sainthood.

Who would kill themselves for a purpose beyond themselves other than someone who might be called a saint?

Osama Bin Laden IS a terrorist because HE is not willing to die. But he does order other people to their deaths. What if his followers said, “Why don’t you go first!” It seems like the guy in charge is never willing to sacrifice what he demands of others. But then he is the one who gets the publicity and the saint gets the death sentence. Just like in real life.
Saints do not kill themselves, they are killed for their love of of Christ.

They are decieved by satan into thinking that “God has chosen them.”

Well…the Muslims kill for God, whereas the Japanese killed for the State.
I don’t think that really matters if the Muslim terrorists believed their God told them to kill. In the Islamic relgion, killing is haram (their equivilent to sin). These people didn’t hear God, they heard satan. They were mistaken, but this isn’t an excuse and does not make them saints.

OK, OK, OK, quick clarification here.

Christian martyr: I will die for what I believe in.

Muslim martyr: You will die for what I believe in.

Christian martyr: You can kill me, I will still not deny Christ

Muslim martyr: I will kill you because you do not accept Islam.

The difference between a Christian Martyr and a Muslim martyr is, in essence, the difference between right, and wrong.

Christian theory- Slap me once, I turn the other cheek and get slapped again.

Muslim theory- Slap me once, I slap you twice!

Nobody has addressed the story of Samson. Although explosives didn’t exist at the time, God gave him the strength to carry out a suicide attack. Was this the wrong thing to do?

Suicide terrorists weren’t dragged into places where they would be mocked by their so-called “victims”.

No.

Saints don’t die in the deliberate commission two mortal sins.

So if they were, would that make their actions justifiable?
You’re making an impossible scenario. Samson was taken in prisoner, mocked, and brought before an entire celebration of depraved individuals. You can’t compare that to those whacky jihadists who sneak around and inflict harm upon people who are just innocent passerbys.

No, this is a perfectly valid scenario because it bring into question whether the act of suicide bombing/attacks can be justifiable given one’s circumstances. You seem to be saying that Samson doing a suicide attack was okay because he was treated very poorly.

So I’ll ask again; if someone went through the hardships that Samson did, whether they be Christian, Muslim, Jew, or Atheist, would they be justified in committing a suicide bombing/attack in a public forum?

No, my point was the difference between the innocent victims of suicide bombers and the clearly villainous Philistines in Samson’s story.

So suicide bombing can be justifiable if you are under the impression that certain people are “villainous”?

The key difference between Samson’s situation and that of a suicide bomber is that Sampson was bound, he had no freedom of action. Thus he did the only thing within his power to attack those who had bound him and put out his eyes.

Suicide bombers always have freedom of action.

*FOX, JOHN R. Citation: For extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Sommocolonia, Italy on 26 December 1944, while serving as a member of Cannon Company, 366th Infantry Regiment, 92d Infantry Division. During the preceding few weeks, Lieutenant Fox served with the 598th Field Artillery Battalion as a forward observer. On Christmas night, enemy soldiers gradually infiltrated the town of Sommocolonia in civilian clothes, and by early morning the town was largely in hostile hands. Commencing with a heavy barrage of enemy artillery at 0400 hours on 26 December 1944, an organized attack by uniformed German units began. Being greatly outnumbered, most of the United States Infantry forces were forced to withdraw from the town, but Lieutenant Fox and some other members of his observer party voluntarily remained on the second floor of a house to direct defensive artillery fire. At 0800 hours, Lieutenant Fox reported that the Germans were in the streets and attacking in strength. He then called for defensive artillery fire to slow the enemy advance. As the Germans continued to press the attack towards the area that Lieutenant Fox occupied, he adjusted the artillery fire closer to his position. Finally he was warned that the next adjustment would bring the deadly artillery right on top of his position. After acknowledging the danger, Lieutenant Fox insisted that the last adjustment be fired as this was the only way to defeat the attacking soldiers. Later, when a counterattack retook the position from the Germans, Lieutenant Fox’s body was found with the bodies of approximately 100 German soldiers. Lieutenant Fox’s gallant and courageous actions, at the supreme sacrifice of his own life, contributed greatly to delaying the enemy advance until other infantry and artillery units could reorganize to repel the attack. His extraordinary valorous actions were in keeping with the most cherished traditions of military service, and reflect the utmost credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army.

This thread has very quickly changed from a question about faith to a bashing of the Islamic religion and Muslim people.

OH for crying out loud!
We are talking about suicide bombers… we have been around Japanese pilots in Second world war and then the suicide attacks of Islamists today who drag civilians, women and childre with them into death.
You wanna talk about other suicide martyrs … I don’t know of many that fit the criteria.

We are talking about a rather big handfull of people who do these attrocities. YOU are the one who say now that all muslims are being attacked on this thread. So you are the one who says all Muslims are terrorist… none of us have said that.

As for the religion of Islam. Yes. It is a very dangeous ideology when acted out in a serious and literal-interpreting way. Bashing indicates false slander. I don’t regard myself or my brothers here as doing that. We do speak about reality though.

You might want to join us with your wisdom if you think we have it all wrong but spare us from your empty tolerance towards people that represent fanatism and violence. Do you also want to say we are harsh if we say the actions of Hitler were absolutely attrocious. Would you take it that we were bashing all the Germans too?

Please…
