Coulter's Anti-Catholic Slur

Did anyone else catch Ann Coulter’s vicious and gratuitous slam at the Catholic Church in her column yesterday? She has a paragraph that begins, “It took the Catholic Church hundreds of years to come up with the corrupt practice of papal indulgences.”
I certainly hope that some Catholic in public life like Robert Novak or Buckley or Bill Donohue will take her on. I was shocked! Perhaps I should not have been.

I am of the opinion that she should not be taken on. Challenging her, as I see it, will only do two things: (1) encourage her; and (2) give her free publicity. Given her history of outrageous comments leading to more publicity leading to more outrageous comments, I think that at this point it’s best to ignore her. You certainly will not change her mind, nor that of her fans.

I’m sorry, but there are pundits on both sides of the aisle who have said worse things about the Church than that.

Here’s what she said, en toto:

I don’t think any Catholic can deny that indulgences were being sold, and that is corruption. The Church admits it, and put a stop to the practice.

Now, she might have gone on for several pages, putting the practice into historical context so her readers could better understand it – but the selling of indulgences was wrong.
 
Actually Vern, the final paragraph does not make a good inferrance. Whether she meant to slam the Catholic Church or not with this statement is another question:
That’s how a real scientific theory operates. That’s even how a real religion operates. Only a false religion needs hate mail, threats, courts of inquisition and Hollywood movies to sustain it.

I just registered on her website’s forum, so I can bring it up there. I’m waiting for Adminstrator approval.

Not sure how to email her.
 
Before I am attacked…I want to say that I am a defender of the Church. I have taken on College presidents who promoted art exhibits that are anti-catholic I write letters and I live in a state that is known for its anti-catholic bias…That said…

I find the comment ‘clumsy’ but the analogy she was trying to make valid. Perhaps a better way to have phrased the remark might have been “it took misguided christians more than one thousand years to create a corrupt system of ‘selling’ indulgenses”…

Her point was that corruption within religion [and christians are readily taken to task for being ‘corrupt’ hence her recognition of an instance] is not normal and if it occurs should be seen as an aberration and not a founding principal or factor. With human secularism and global environmentalism [both new found religions] it has occurred at its instance.

As catholics we do own our past, worts and all. There were abuses that occurred around the selling of indulgences. Christians [including those of us inside Mother Church] have at times acted out in UNCHRISTIAN acts. Some of those acts were identified overtly and covertly with the Church. To be overly sensitive is not beneficial nr productive. To hide or ignore the reality gets us where we were with the latest scandal.

That said I think we can all read into the commentary the proper context and not see the piece as an attack upon the Church. If Ann Coulter wanted to denigrate the Catholic Church in a meaningful way she would. I just see this as an example that the common person would recognise, it was long ago. She could just as easily used the abuse scandal of today. However, then the focus would have shifted to those ‘evil’ catholic priests and the real point of the message been lost. Can you see that?
 
I think what you have to remember is that Ann Coulter is a sort of professional smart-aleck.

I’m not saying I love her or I hate her - just that she lives off generating interest in her opinions, and the way she does that is by trying to outrage people.

I agree the comment is not complementary to the Church, but I read the entire column (The Coming A** Age (March 21, 2007)), and I don’t think her main point is to slam the Church, but more a part of her ongoing depiction of liberalism (with its various pet issues, like global warming, among others) as a religion unto itself. And that Liberalism as a religion is actually a lot worse than the religions it constantly tries to find fault with.

you can email some columnist thru Townhall…I’m not sure about Ms Coulter, though.
 
I agree UH, but I am going to bring it up on her forum regardless. The indulgences parallel to carbon offsets is clever; it is only tying “false religions” to “inquisitions” that is troubling. It is clear from the article that she is painting Global Warming as the false religion, but she (probably inadvertantly) inferred that our Church is also a false religion.

She was making a point about liberals not the Catholic Church, that was just her analogy.

She said that the “practices of papal indulgences” had become corrupt; that is a fact.

If she had said the “false teachings” of the Catholic Church that would be anti-Catholic, but I have no problem with what she said. I know she is not anti-Catholic.

Read her entire column before you make up your mind. Also the original post mis quoted her slightly.

I don’t know a whole lot about her but from what I do know, I thought she WAS a Catholic.:confused:

No she is not Catholic but she holds many of the same values. She is Protestant of some kind or another.

I have heard her talk favorably about the Pope and the Church many times.

If you read the column you will understand why she used that for her analogy.

I guess she must be very Christian. I was lead to believe she was Catholic by her ideas. I know she is very prolife and refers to abortion as the Holy Sacrafice of the liberals, or something to that effect.😃 😃

I’m guessing that she just unintentionally left out the word “selling” when talking about indulgences.
 
Wow, I was always a fan of Ann Coulter. I used to like Sean Hannity too. I’m done with both of them. it’s that easy for me. These senseless attacks are so uneducated and show so little knowledge of what Catholics actually believe that my respect for them has dropped immensley.
