Court bars boycott of civics class in Spain

MADRID: Thousands of children boycotting a civic education class that includes the exploration of such issues as gay rights and stem-cell research must return to the class following a ruling by the Supreme Court here.

The court ruled Wednesday that public-school children could not be kept out of the class on the basis of conscientious objection. The ruling was a blow for parents who asserted that the class usurped their right to sculpt their children’s morals and promoted ideas that clash with their own conservative values.

The curriculum, which is taught in primary and secondary schools, includes lessons on human rights, gender equality and political systems, as well as sexuality and family issues.

Since it started in September 2007, the class has become a battleground for competing visions of Spanish society: one grounded in Catholicism and the other in the liberal policies of the Socialist government of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

This same sort of thing is happening in the United States. In fact, the school’s requiring children to be educated in a government required promotion of gay “rights” in California greatly helped the passage of Proposition 8 there.
Parents according to Catholic teaching are the primary educators of their children. Parents should be able to pass their values on to their own children, without having the government overthrow their family’s values.
Hopefully, in Spain this will help the Socialist government now in power to be voted out of office in the next election.

That’s just wrong on so many levels. I hope that the right of conscientious objection on the part of parents and children may be protected.

What is society’s view on this? I haven’t seen too much fuss over this just yet in society; hopefully people don’t start questioning the parent’s right to educate their children as they see fit…

I think what has happend in Spain is truly detestable, but I think it is something that will continue to happen more often in the future. As countries continually seperate themselves from ideas of God, we will see an increase of forced indoctrination into their idea of a humanistic society. I think that this has been already been going on, even in the United States, but it will begin to expand, as people leave religious beliefs behind for other pursuits.

As Catholics, we must always remember to fight for what we believe in and not submit to that which will corrupt our morals. It may be an uphill battle, but we must remember it is a battle.

I think in America the MSM has been ignoring this issue because it makes them uncomfortable. You can argue that this is a free-speech issue, where the government is denying the parents their free-speech rights in terms of forming and informing their children (i.e., only government-approved speech is permitted). The MSM has a stake in ensuring free speech, so supporting this issue pits them against themselves. So they just ignore it.

The Spanish Supreme Court may have barred the class boycott, but it did allow the option of contesting the contents of the textbooks.

True, and it is good that there is still some recourse left; however, the problem with the course is greater than the textbooks. Hopefully, those who oppose the course will be able to overturn certain apects of it through the appeals process, as the content and curriculum of the classes are truly questionable to Catholics in Spain.
