Have any of you who are married had a short courtship? If so, how long have you been married?

I’ve basically come to the conclusion that there really is no right or wrong way when it comes to the length of courtship. That it all boils down to commitment.

I’ve seen and heard of people who have met and married within months of the first meeting and who have been married a lifetime. Then there are others who dated the standard year and a half or two, married and then divorced. I overheard on a talk radio program of a woman who thought she knew her husband. They had known each other a total of 7 years. I believe they had dated for three and were married for 4. She learned that he had been having an affair with the same woman for 2 years. As it was once said to me, you could be married for 30 years and not know your spouse.

Do any of you have any stories or thoughts you would like to share?

I’m not sure I understand your query. Do you want to hear only from people who had short courtships? Or are you also interested in people who had long courtships?

DH & I met in July, got engaged in October, and married the following May. We just celebrated 32 years this year.
But, we were older than the average couple, early 30s.

Peace,
Linda

Let’s see. I wouldn’t say dh & I had a “courtship”. We dated. But given what you’re asking, or what I think you’re asking, the two terms can be interchangeable.

Anyway…

met in Sept. ‘94 - knew each other as casual acquaintances via mutual friends - as in, at parties thrown by them, we’d say hi and chat for about 5 min. Actually started talking more and forming a friendship right after our friends’ wedding, in Oct. '97

had our first date June '98
got engaged Oct. '99
married Feb. '01

I’m mostly interested in those who married within a short time of having met. But actually all of the “how we met” stories interest me. I used to love to read those in Ann Landers. 😃

We met Spring '93 when our teenage dtrs got us together, thinking we each needed a boyfriend/girlfreind, We started dating that summer and got married in Feb. 94. I converted at the Easter Vigil in '02 and have never been happier. He never got on me about it, I just watched how faithful he was/is and wanted to be more like that.

We met at Easter 2003 when we sang together in the choir for masses. We were acquaintances at first, and developed into friends when I joined the choir full time in Oct 2004, although we weren’t close.

He first asked me out in March 2006 (which was a shock to me, I can tell you!), we started going out (with the explicit intention on both our parts to work out whether marriage was a good idea) in June 2006, got engaged at Easter 2007 (his second proposal ;)) and married in April 2008 🙂

I don’t know whether you would count that a short courtship - we felt that 10 months of going out before getting engaged probably seemed fast to outsiders, but since we’d been friends for a while first, lived in the same place and saw each other pretty much every day during our courtship, that adds up to a lot of hours!

Though my parents knew each other for years since their childhood, they didn’t start dating until their mid-twenties. My dad was on leave from the Navy, visiting his best friend (my uncle) when he started showing more interest in my mom. Four months later they were married and are still together after nearly 48 years of marriage. 👍

My sister and her husband dated for almost two years before exchanging vows - they just celebrated their 16th anniversary. 👍

I, on the other hand, dated my ex-husband for over a year and a half before I got married (notice the prefix “ex”…). I met my present husband online in April, we met IRL in September, and were married in January. So far, my marriage has lasted twice as long as my first. 🙂

So as you can see, I can’t determine whether or not length of courtships are an indication or a factor in determining how long a marriage lasts, either!

I met my husband online in early 2004, we met in person in May 2004 and were officially engaged in July 2005, married April 2006. We’ve been married for 2 and a half years.

I don’t think the length of “courtship” has anything to do with how successful the marriage is.

My wife and I met in Early November, Started dating in Mid December and got engaged in Mid January. We got married that December, one year after we started dating. We probably would have gotten married sooner, but I was in Flight School with the Army starting in April, we got married during my Christmas leave. We have been married for almost 20 years.

I believe it is not the length of the courtship, it is the depth of the commitment.

We knew after 4 months, but got married after 5 years. We were just starting Uni when we met 🙂
