The Greek word for cousin “anepsios” is used in the New Testament. See Paul, below. More importantly, Jesus’ brothers and sisters are never referred to as cousins (anepsios). They are called brothers or sisters.

Paul uses the term “anepsios” (Strongs G 431) correctly referring to Barnabas’ "anepsios"cousin in Colossians 4:10

" My fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you his greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas."

And lets look how ridiculous Mark 3 becomes if we try to make Jesus’ brothers and sisters into cousins.

Mark 3: 31-35

The True Kindred of Jesus:

31 And his mother and his **cousins **came; and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting about him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your cousins are outside, asking for you.” 33 And he replied, “Who are my mother and my cousins?” 34 And looking around on those who sat about him, he said, “Here are my mother and my **cousins **35 Whoever does the will of God is my male cousin, and female cousin, and mother."
The Greek word for, “Brethren”, In Mk 3: 31, Is “Adelphos”, It’s the same as in Matt 13: 55.
And it means, [Brothers, Not cousins] “Children of the same mother”.
For the truth, See my post, Post #19.

The word “adelphos” and its Hebrew equivalent “ah” referred to a relative of ones same generation, whether offspring of the same parents, half-siblings, or first/second cousins. The term Luke uses for Elizabeth is anepsios, which most translations render “kinsman” or “relative” and is probably used in recognition of Elizabeth’s being of a different generation from Mary (see Paul’s use of the same term to describe the relationship between Barnabas and Mark in Colossians).

Adelphos is also the word that the early Christians used to refer to one another, as when Paul addresses his epistle to “brethren” or “brothers and sisters.” So it’s just silly when people try to insist that it HAS to mean “child of the same parents.”

Some scholars have pointed out that the Greek writers of the NT could have used “homomêtôr” (half-sibling/sharing the same mother) if they had wanted to distinguish Mary’s other children from others who would have qualified as adelphoi.

The other fact that those who want to “prove” that Mary did not remain a virgin (which is of course the point of the argument) tend to overlook is that the mothers and fathers of James (the greater), John, James (the younger), Joses, Simon, Levi and Jude are all named in the New Testament.

I think you need to read post #19.

Maybe you should look into the facts instead of trying to make a case for something that the Word of God does not actually say. As a “revert” (See My Testimony) I discovered that many n-Cs try to impose what they want the scriptures say where it actually does not, even in the face of a host of evidence, both scriptural and historical that contradicts their projected position.

Let’s start by looking at what the earliest Protestant leaders/ preachers taught on this matter.

The Perpetual Virginity of Mary:

Martin Luther
**:** “ It is an article of faith that Mary is Mother of the Lord and still a virgin… Christ, we believe, came forth from a womb left perfectly intact.” ( Works of Luther, Vol. 11, pages 319-320; Vol. 6, page 510.)

John Calvin**:** “ There have been certain folk who have wished to suggest from this passage [Matthew 1:25] that the Virgin Mary had other children than the Son of God, and that Joseph had then dwelt with her later; but what folly this is! For the gospel writer did not wish to record what happened afterwards; he simply wished to make clear Joseph’s obedience and to show that Joseph had been well and truly assured that it was God who had sent His angel to Mary. He had therefore never dwelt with her nor had he shared her company… And beside this Our Lord Jesus Christ is called the first-born. This is not because there was a second or a third, but because the gospel writer is paying regard to the precedence. Scripture speaks thus of naming the first-born whether or no there was any question of the second.” (Sermon on Matthew 1:22-25. Published in 1562.)

Ulrich Zwingli**:** “I firmly believe that Mary, according to the words of the gospel, as a pure Virgin brought forth for us the Son of God and in childbirth and after childbirth forever remained a pure, intact Virgin.” ( Zwingli Opera, Vol. 1, page 424.)

Then, let’s look at other more modern sources that show what the Bible and the early Christian writers actually teaches on this.

  1. *] Brethren of the Lord
    *] Mary: Ever Virgin
*] Why should any doctrine not explicitly referred to in the Bible, be listened to?
*] How do you respond to “Everything you need to know is in the Bible”?
*] How can we know a doctrine is true if it’s not in the Bible?
*] How do we know that the Protoevangelium of James is credible?
*] Does Church Tradition exist only to interpret Scripture?
    *] Non-Canonical Writings…
*] Oral Traditions not found in the Bible

  1. You are going by your own experience and the beliefs of men rather then the Biblical truth.
If you knew the Bible and you knew the catholic teachings, You would know thet aren’t the same, There are far to many differences between the Biblical Church and the catholic church, For the catholics to be God’s Church.

The Biblical truth according to who? You?

Why should we submit to your interpretation of Sacred Scripture?

Tell us about you, your church, where and when did your church start? Where and when did it receive authority from Jesus to interpret and teach Scripture?

The Biblical truth according to the Bible and the Hebrew and Greek Bible texts.
Who else do you think??. Certainly not my own opinions.

I have shown you what the Bible and the original Greek Bible texts say, But I can’t make you believe it.

My Church started on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit birthed the Church.
My authority to believe and teach the Bible, Comes from the Holy Spirit,
Jn 14: 26. Jn 16: 13–15.
My Authority is in the name of Jesus, Jn 14: 12. Mk 16: 17–20.

Read the Bible carefully. Christ established the Catholic Church and gave it authority in matters of faith and morals.
The New Testament was written by Catholics and the Bible as a whole was put together by the Catholic Church.

Oh Gee…

Hi, saved75! Mind if I address some of the claims you’ve made?
Thiis might help you, [Thats if you want the truth].

1)The Greek word for Brethren, Is “Adelphos”, It can mean,
[A] Brothers of the same womb.
** Spiritual brothers.
[C] Near-Kinsman.**

OK… so, when we read that Jesus had adelphos’es (;)), it doesn’t necessarily mean “brothers of the same womb.” Cool.
2)Biblical proof That Mary had other children.
The Greek word for “Brethren” is Adelphos"
Matt 13: 55. Mk 6: 3. Jn 7: 3-5. Acts 1: 13–14. 1 Cor 9: 5.
In this context it means, I Quote,
“Brothers of the same womb as Jesus”.

I have a friend that asked me about Mary having other Children. I know the Church teaches of her perpetual virginity. I was able to show evidence of for instance Joseph being a devout Jew and knew that her pregnancy was a result of God and would therefore not touch her since she was the “spouse of the holy spirit”. and so forth…

She mentioned how it says Jesus has “brothers and sisters” in the gospel…

I told her something I’ve heard time and time again … that the term cousin was not used back then in that extremely close knit familial culture. Everyone considered their kin as brother and sister… then she came back at me with…well why then is Mary’s cousin Elizabeth mentioned as “Her cousin Elizabeth” in scripture.

Please help!
Thanks
She , St. Elizabeth was definetly her cousin the brothers and sisters of Jesus are not the offspring of Mary; if they existed, they are brothers in the universal brotherhood of Jesus Who takes on all humanity as His brother. Mary is given universal motherhood over all humanity also. There is also filial brotherhood etc. Sometimes also cousins could be raised so closely that they were thought of as brothers. Sometimes friends could be so close that they were more like brothers than even their flesh brothers; there are many possibilities and none of them can be eliminated because there is nothing further in the NT that establishes anyone other than Jesus as a son of Mary.

My authority to believe and teach the Bible, Comes from the Holy Spirit,
Could you please show us how the Holy Spirit gave you the “authority” to teach the Bible?
A post from the Holy Spirit Himself would suffice.

Just whom are you ‘quoting’, here? Certainly not the Scriptures you cite, which only say adelphos, and not anything about “the same womb”…!

As noted above, in this thread, sungenis is ‘kin’, while yet another word means cousin in the way we use it today (the children of one’s parents’ siblings).

And, as you’ve mentioned, adelphos can mean both kin and spiritual kin, but you’ve shown nothing that establishes your assertion as the only conclusion that may be reached.

And we see the same word used in 2 Samuel 6:23 that David’s wife Michal “had no child until the day of her death”. By your logic, then, meaning that she did have children, after she died…? 😉

Oh, my. Someone has seriously misled you, my friend. The important part of this description isn’t that Jesus was the only son – it’s that he was the first-born: this is a term that is highly important in Jewish religion. You see, it’s the first-born – the “one who opens the womb” (cf Ex 13:2) – who is consecrated to the Lord and must be redeemed. This notion of ‘first-born’ doesn’t take into account whether there are one or two or ten children by a particular mother – all it cares about is who is the one who comes first. The use of this term in Luke, then, doesn’t make a statement about how many children Mary had; rather, it is telling the Jewish Christian readers of the Gospel that Jesus fits the Mosaic covenant’s prescriptions for the bechor – the one who opened Mary’s womb.

Of course it doesn’t: every mother who has only one child has a ‘firstborn’!

With all due respect, friend… you have been greatly misled; the “original Greek meanings” you cite aren’t accurate at all.

Peace,

G.
If you read what I said, You would have seen that I said you need to put the right Greek word in it’s right context, But you overlooked that point.

Matt 13: 55. Mk 6: 3. Jn 7: 3-5. Acts 1: 13–14. 1 Cor 9: 5.

I have given you scriptural and original Greek scriptural proof that Mary had other children, But you are going by your own opinions, Or the opinions of the catholic church.

I will stay with the truth.

Oh, I read what you wrote – but you really didn’t establish the ‘brothers of the same womb’ assertion. Yes, you asserted it, but you failed to establish the context that you claim to have done.
I have given you scriptural and original Greek scriptural proof that Mary had other children
which I refuted.
But you are going by your own opinions
And your assertions aren’t your own opinions? 😉
You are a typical catholic, Twisting the truth.
My… when you don’t have an attempt at a refutation, you certainly turn to ad hominem attacks quite easily, don’t you? 😉

Peace,

G.

My authority to teach the Bible is, 1 Cor 12: 28. Eph 4: 11–13.

Also.
My authority to believe and teach the Bible, Comes from the Holy Spirit,
Jn 14: 26. Jn 16: 13–15.
My Authority is in the name of Jesus, Jn 14: 12. Mk 16: 17–20.

Or isn’t God’s word good enough for you??.
