I’m just the opposite. I love Dolly’s version and I think Whitney’s is a bit overblown.

I like both versions, I just like Whitney’s better. I will admit the version I posted of Whitney singing in my previous post is one I don’t like as well as I do this one…

Dolly and Whitney’s versions each bring something different to the song. I like Dolly’s simple, honest, sad emotion when she sings it, but that sadness plus the power, richness and range of Whitney’s version is one I really appreciate. I like Dolly and think she is one of the best songwriters around. That being said, not many voices were as big and as blessed as Whitney’s was. I imagine such a big voice is hard to make small. God making us all with different opinions and liking different things is great for selling records. 😀

That isn’t even the best cover of the song. The Searchers have that. The original, btw, was recorded by Jackie DeShannon.(fun fact— It was co-written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche. From wikipedia: In his autobiography, Bono states that he sang along with Nitzsche’s guitar-playing, thus creating both the tune and the lyrics, being guided by the chord progressions. Jackie DeShannon tells the story differently, that the song was written at the piano, and that she was a full participant in the song’s creation, along with Nitzsche and Bono, although she didn’t get formal credit.)

The original :

Thanks for posting the DeShannon version: I’d not heard it before and liked her interpretation.
My favorite remains Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks:

She also recorded the original version of “What the World Needs Now” and wrote and recorded the classic “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” as well as the great song “When You Walk in the Room”, another song covered by the Searchers. Really, for someone who recorded the originals of some classic songs, most people are pretty unfamiliar with her, although they would know some of her songs. RIP Tom Petty

Virtually the entire “Across the Universe” soundtrack. Very few of the Beatles originals were better.

However, I wasn’t around when they came out. So those originals don’t “transport” me anywhere - as such, I understand strong disagreement by some. 😅

I checked out Put a Little Love in Your Heart. +
I love Francine Reed’s version of 455 Rocket:

This is possibly the best 3 person harmony ever.
