It is distracting. To prevent this, just prior to the Lord’s Prayer, I hold my hands (palms together) under my chin, bow my head and close my eyes. It works for me and has allowed me to pray without distractions. I think people feel too intrusive to try to hold someone’s hand when they are praying like this.

On a side note, at other times during the Mass I will sometimes close my eyes because I can better concentrate on what is being said. I hope our priest doesn’t think I’m sleeping! :o

As you are praying?

Generally people reach out to the person next to them, just before the prayer begins.

If you desire not to hold hands, just close your eyes and fold your hands.

Of course, your refusal to hold hands will probably be on your mind and hence, distract you.

Thankfully, I have no such distractions at my home parish. It’s only when we travel.

Based on the nasty looks I get, it seems the folks who are reaching out to hold my hand are more distracted than I am. 😛

I don’t give dirty looks when I am in church.

I am truly sorry you have received such un-Christ like treatment from some of your brethren. With treatment like that I would agree it would be a distraction. I would hope you would be charitable and forgive them for infringing on your way and focus. Perhaps the next time it happens you could be so good as to gently admonish them after the Mass.

Ok, A couple of days ago I bowed out of this discussion. But just to throw another 2 cents. There are folks that think we should be holding hands. Not that it’s even a discussion item. they believe it is what we’ve been told to do.
I was actually “POKED” by some old guy when we were visiting ( I won’t say where) a parish (but it wasn’t in Maryland). He actually had a somewhat stern look on his face like I was some kind of wierdo for NOT holding hands. I continued to keep my hands folded, shook my head and prayed.

Now I’m not looking for anyone to say" I’m so sad you were treated poorly, bla-bla-bla.
It’s the fact that he was Sooooo convinced that he was correct.

So now we have half the “Church” (not Parish), holding hands believeing it’s correct and us other half saying it’s not. WE HAVE DIVISION:(

Because someone started something that they thought was nice and it spread. It was done without permission from the Church.

People on both sides of this on this thread would more than likely be great buds, but we have something as stupid as this causing this kind of division.

I’d be willing to write a letter to the US Bishops conference asking them to decide which is correct. We would all need to sign it. They won’t respond to to “Doug”. More than likely they would not respond if we had 10,000 signatures. Why, because it will cause even more division and headaches for them when there are much more pressing issues.

So since I know that I’m correct…:cool:

Ok, I woke up from my dream, continue the debate…

Oh, and something else. Notice my picture at the top (I guess you call that an “Avatar”). That’s my daughter Tess, Who two weeks ago became “Sister Rock of Constancy” with the Servants of the Lord and Our Lady of Matara.

They are very orthodox and DO NOT hold hands!

My second oldest son is a seminarian in the Arch Diocese of …(I probably should not say where:shrug:). He has told me we should NOT be holding hands. That is what all the new Priests are being told. It will take a while, but the pendulum will swing back.👍

Fantastic! :clapping: A friend of mine, fellow parishioner and former CAF poster Kayla, became “Sr. Maria Asteron Dodekas” with the same order this year in Maryland. We used to attend a parish served by the order in California. They are wonderful!

It is nice to see that this Bishop is standing up for what is right. It is not right for people to hold hands during the Our Father. I don’t know if there is an official stance on this or not but I am personally opposed to even husbands and wives holding hands during the Our Father. Another thing that bothers me is how when the sign of peace is passed it seems as though people think we are taking a break from Mass and now its time to gossip! I have personally seen this in my own parish and it is very annoying.

I think I may have met her, my daughter would know. I went to the ceremony when they recieved the veil (another great topic :byzsoc:). We live in Maryland, (St. Mary’s County no less!) I will ask, if she just recieved her veil, my daughter and her live at the same “Novice” convent.
