I’ll ask again. Why does the Vatican discourage the practice of the congregation holding hands during the Our Father? Do they hold hands during the Our Father at daily Mass at St. John Lateran in Rome?

I highly doubt it. I’d be shocked to see that at the mother church of the entire universe.

I’ve seen this done in Maronite Churches almost universally at some point in the Liturgy. I’ve only gone a few times so I’m sure of the part of the Liturgy though. Does anyone know about this? Maybe someone in the Latin Church got the idea from the East? I really don’t know.
I never saw people so much as look at one another in the Orthodox church, Coptic or Greek. Definitely no hand-grabbing. Two things were watched: the priest, and the floor or the back of the eyelids during the confecting of the Eucharist. Two or three positions were used (depending on whether the Church had pews) standing, kneeling, and sometimes sitting.

I’ve never been in a Syriac rite church.

I have some questions regarding this if anyone can help.

Someone mentioned keeping hands folded together throughout the Mass. Do you mean holding your hands together in your lap? What about the traditional prayer position, hands pressed together pointing upward, when in the liturgy is this done? Is it supposed to be done?

Is there a prescribed rubic for such things for the laity written in brief simple lanuage. I have looked at a GIRM document and it is huge.

There is nothing in the GIRM at all about what the laity are to be doing with their hands during Mass. The only postures it mentions for the laity are when to stand, kneel, and bow.

Read the decree, then restate what you just wrote… if you feel comfortable disobeying a Bishop’s decree. 👍

So you resurrected an 11 month old thread just to accuse me of disobeying a bishop. I’m flattered. 😛

I was responding to a specific question by another poster later in the thread. I would never encourage someone to disobey Bishop Foys. I have great respect for him. On this issue (and many others) I agree with him. But his stipulation in this regard is for the members of his own diocese, not the universal Church.

My apologies. I was under the impression you were from that Diocese. My bad! When one assumes, it makes an “a” out of u & Me… 😉

God bless! 🙂

Holding hands is distracting… When you have an actual, cogent argument, feel free to present it.
Someone’s arms and hands outstretched half across your body is also distracting, and completely enervates me to my core. How does this not affect people? And those who don’t even know why they do it but follow suit, aren’t they questioning the gesture as they’re praying the “Pater Noster”?

Annoyed beyond… you get the picture. 🙂

No one instituted it. A wave of hippie parishoners and liberal Priests thought it would be a good idea in the 70s and 80s, and it became commonplace sadly for many in my generation who were raised then. I always hated it, even as a kid, since i knew it was some bogus “innovation” to the Mass. I wasn’t even a fan of holding hands with my wife during the Our Father, and luckily, our priest put the smackdown on the practice 2 weeks ago, so I am not the bad guy any more 🙂
He Man, you are my hero!👍
