As I’m sure most people here are frustrated at liturgical abuses (gay Masses, Winnie-the-Pooh Masses, ad infinitum), why doesn’t the Vatican take severe disciplinary action?

My idea:

Send an official from CDF (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) to do an inspection on churches to make sure everything is done according to the rubrics, make sure all is orthodox, and all that good stuff. And if the priest doesn’t clean up his act, he gets penalized (I have no idea what this would be, but…).

Call it a crackdown, an inquisition, whatever. But obviously, something needs to be done. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? Surely the Holy See cares about proper adoration due to Our Lord?

And if this is done, what would be the possible repurcussions? I imagine that some priests are so steeped in their pride that they would defect to another denomination, but on how large of a scale are we talking about here? How much attendance would be lost? What about money? Would Our Lord approve or disapprove of it? Things like that. Is a crackdown worth it or not worth it?

I’ve said for quite awhile that we need another inquisition. I have no idea how to run the logistics and such, but we desperately need it!!!

That’s basically what I was thinking of, except without the torture and burning. But I think it must be admitted that the Inquisitions WORKED. It’s just that in today’s society, I’m not so sure.

At least to have a crackdown would result in findinh out which priests really WANT to be priests. Some, I am sure are ‘going through the motions’.
We would get our passionate priests for our Lord! 🙂

Go with God!

THE RITE OF DEGRADATION OF A BISHOP ACCORDING TO THE ROMAN PONTIFICAL OF POPE BENEDICT XIV:

If the degradandus be an archbishop, the degrading prelate removes his pallium, saying: “We deprive thee of the rights and privileges of the episcopal dignity, symbolized in this pallium, since thou hast abused them.” Then, even if the degradandus be a mere bishop, the degrading prelate removes his mitre, saying: “We strip thy head of this miter, emblem of the episcopal dignity, since thou hast befouled it by thy ill government.” Then one of the ministers brings the Book of the Gospel to the degradandus, which the degrading prelate takes from his hands, saying; “Give us back the Gospel! Since thou hast spurned the grace of God and made thyself unworthy of the office of preaching, we rightly deprive you of this office.” Then the degrading prelate removes the ring from the finger of the degradandus, saying: “Rightly do we pull off thy ring, the sign of fidelity, since thou hast made bold to rape God’s own bride, the Church.” At this time one of the ministers brings the degradandus a crosier, which the degrading prelate takes from his hands, saying; “Thy shepherd’s staff we take from thee, that thou shalt be powerless henceforward to exercise that office of correction, which thou hast brought to disarray.”

Then the ministers take off the gloves of the degradandus, and the degrading prelate lightly scrapes thumbs and hands with a knife blade or a shard of glass, saying: “We hereby deprive thee, to the extent of our powers, of the grace of spiritual blessing and of sacramental anointing, that thou shouldst forfeit the office of sanctifying and of blessing, and their effects.” With the same knife blade or shard the degrading prelate lightly scrapes the head of the degradandus, saying: “We utterly erase and eradicate the consecration, blessing, and anointing bestowed upon thee, and we put thee out of the episcopal order, whence thou returnest unclothed.”

The ministers remove the shoes from the degradandus. Thus ends the ceremony.

Yup, this thing is real, and I were the average American bishop, I’d be quaking in my boots upon even seeing the text of this thing…

Hehehehe… Just thought of something. Sure it’s been said before but… “When the Dominicans are away, the heretics will play…”

I do wonder why so much that is so wrong is allowed to go on, and on, and on. My parish is ok. No actual liturgical abuses or theatrical homilies, but just lukewarm reverence from the congragation.
I know that some of the oddities people here have put up with would break my heart.

I encourage all to report these abuses after familiarising yourself with R.S.

Send a letter to the ruling bishop with a cc to Ratzinger and Arinze.

About half the time, I’ll get a reply from the ruling bishop (once a bishop took action against the offending priest)

I’ve yet to receive a reply from Arinze. Every so often I get a card (usually Xmas) from the Nuncio’s address. They’re written in German and Latin and signed (machine) by Ratzinger.

They need to get this feedback from enough people that they don’t think it’s the occasional crank

The problem is that these priests are going to change how they do things (if they have any idea of what they are doing is wrong…and I believe most of them do) if they know someone of importance is watching.

I always thought that if you could convince your Bishop to come, unannounced (Come in 1 minute late, so that the pesky laity don’t fawn over you and annouce your presence), and sit at the back and watch over the Mass.

If you can’t convince them to do that, I have also thought of bringing an audio recorder to Mass and then sending the tape to the Bishop with an explaination.

Of course, I don’t attend that parish anymore (for obvious reasons), and so have lost the opportunity. I did talk with the Priest and with the Bishop face to face about the liturgical abuses, and my concerns were duely noted, but with little effect.

Letters are good, but make sure you are willing to back up all your claims (nothing anon) and if the Bishop takes you seriously, you have to have hard evidence to bring to bear (hence why I thought of the audio recording thing…)

Just some thoughts.

I was thinking more like a guy from the Vatican that nobody recognizes, wearing civilian dress, and giving an evaluation, completely unannounced. That way, a “bad” priest would have to worry about the “Inquisitors” all the time, but a “good” priest has nothing to worry about since an Inquisitor would give him brownie points for doing a good job.

Whoa! That’s ingenious. Are there any versions for regular priests?

Not so sure about the eradication of the anointing and stuff, though, since Holy Orders can’t be taken back, can it?

I thoroughly agree with everything being said…but we need to get to the root of the problem. My only advice is to read the book ‘Goodbye Good Men’ and we are made to realize that many problems stem from there and many of our hierarchy are involved in such activities! Clean out the seminaries and then maybe the parish problems would not exist. :o

I’ll second that, although the book actually gave me nightmares. :bigyikes: But to understand the problem it is a must read.

Maybe the Church needs to borrow the Marine Corps’ recruiting motto for the seminaries:

The Church is looking for a few good ( i.e., celibate heterosexual, manly, conservative, orthodox, Christ-centered ) MEN. :hmmm:

I think I heard from Msgr John Tracy Ellis that they actually this once during the pontificate of Pivs XII to a bishop in Iowa. The ceremony wasn’t as elaborate but was public.

Where do you go when all your bishops say no?
Well you can always go…DEN-TON
Turn that altar around, the FSSP is in town
So we’re all gonna go…DEN-TON
Just listen to the Bishop chanting Dominus Vobiscum!
If ya know some Latin maybe you can chant it with him!
How can we lose? The faith is much stronger there, you can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares!
Go to DEN-TON where all the doctrine’s right!
DEN-TON, looks like we’ll be alright!
DEN-TON, forget “The Spirit of Vatican Twowooooo…”

Hehe. Obviously one has to be a little loose with the rhythm in places, but it fits nicely to a nice song out of the late 60’s sung by a certain Englishwoman. Hehe.
