So we had an underpowered electric organ in a choir loft. Choir up there too. Many voices. They sung, congregation listened. The first 4 grades were in the basement of the church. Us kids all went to church from babies to teens. We all behaved OR ELSE.
Offertory collection was by basket passed on a long stick handled by ushers only.
Ushers coordinated those going to communion to keep the lines moving.
Easter lighting of the Paschal candle was done indoors with real flame and people had larger candles. No churches burnt down, to the best of my knowledge.
For us kids… let’s see, 2 candles… must be a lo mass. Oh oh, 6 candles… hi mass.
Bells were not optional.
Oh. We ran out of room. New church. Now Church downstairs, classrooms upstairs.
Later in hi school, we moved. New church being built. New cross shaped. Altar in the middle. Electronic church bell in tower. Octagon for altar rail. Hey, that’s cool, priest just goes round and round instead of typewriter mode for communion. New church has a “bawl room” with audio piped in and window to view mass for moms with young kids. Nice pipe organ. I liked that. What’s that piano doing? Seldom or never used. (Notice this is during Vatican II.) Went to this church thru college years.
Fast forward 50 or so years.
Church sometimes uses bells. Choir lofts seem to have disappeared. Altar rails seem to have disappeared. Nice pipe organ that is used very seldom. Piano now present. Primary. Sometimes drum set. Sometimes guitar. Sometimes viola. Lots of people distributing communion. Tabernacle off to the side. Funny posters on the wall. School in a different building.
Christ present in first church, the second church, the third church, and my present church.
Some things change, some things dont.
Blessings,
Stephie
