Die creationism, die!!

Why don’t creationism just die. The only thing it has done for the human race is deceive atheists in to thinking they have the perfect excuse.

You have rejected all the evidence for God!
Repetition and argument from exclamation marks.

Evidence for God is within us and all around us, there’s no need for an ISTE (Invented Supernatural Thingamajig Excuse :)).
There is no evidence that consciousness arises from matter because no one has ever explained how it could have occurred, let alone how it did occur.
Somehow I knew you’d confuse evidence with explanation. MRI evidence is enough by itself to show that the mind is in the brain. You have no contrary evidence and your theory has no explanatory power, all you can do is criticize. But the problem with arguing against science is that every day a bit more knowledge is gained, the explanation becomes more tangible, and all you can do is retreat.
It doesn’t feel unlikely it is unlikely because there is not one jot of evidence that the brain** knows and understands **what it is doing.
The evidence is it’s the brain does the thinking. You not being able to explain it isn’t a cue to give up and plea for ISTEs .
*Numbers prove nothing. *
They show that fewer and fewer people are satisfied by ISTEs.
No a logical argument because there is no self on the biochemical plain. It does not appear in any scientific papers, treatises or publications.
Yes it does, a lot of scientists are interested in self-perception, e.g. an old favorite:

scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=real-outof-body-experiences
Precisely where is it located and how would you recognise it?
BIG philosophical question bro. According to I think therefore I am the self is the thing doing the thinking, i.e. the brain. But when reading a novel the thing doing the thinking extends our self to the hero and when playing a video game it extends it to our avatar, we become our avatar. So the concept of self is squidgy, perhaps even it’s an illusion. Jesus asks us to be selfless, perhaps He knows the ego is an illusion.

I’ll ask you the same question in the hope you’ll do more than mumble about ISTEs. 😃
Precisely! They cause disasters not development…
Are you saying it’s better to stagnate?

You have rejected all the evidence for God!
Evasion…
Evidence for God is within us and all around us, there’s no need for an ISTE (Invented Supernatural Thingamajig Excuse ).
In your scheme of things God is an ISTE and you replace with an INTE (Invented Natural Thingamajig Excuse)

Your theory is inadequate and induces you to replace spirit with an INTE

Your explanation becomes more and more of an INTE
it doesn’t feel unlikely it is unlikely because there is not one jot of evidence that the brain knows and understands what it is doing.
The evidence is it’s the brain does the thinking.

What is the precise mechanism by which the brain thinks and is aware of itself?

What branch of physical science is that?

We are persons made in the image of God.

Are you saying it’s better to stagnate?

How do you reach that conclusion?

In your scheme of things God is an ISTE and you replace with an INTE (Invented Natural Thingamajig Excuse)
You rushed into defining your INTE without stopping to think that the brain is not an invented thingamajig, it’s real and sits between your ears, or so I’ve been told. 🙂

We may be using different definitions here. My dictionary says supernatural = caused by forces that cannot be explained by science or things that cannot be explained by science. A miracle or paranormal event might be supernatural, but not God, God is neither a force nor a thing. Anyway He falls outside the remit of science as unlike His creation He is not physical.
Your theory is inadequate and induces you to replace spirit with an INTE
It’s not a theory, it’s evidence. When a piano falls on your head, I don’t need to know the minute detail of its exact trajectory.
What is the precise mechanism by which the brain thinks and is aware of itself?
Again, you’re confusing theory with evidence.
NeoDarwinist propaganda has induced them to believe in an INTE
Pretty pictures from MRI scanners have nothing to do with neo-Darwinism, we just look and see the evidence, that can’t be a conspiracy.
What branch of physical science is that?
Cognitive neuroscience.
We are persons made in the image of God.
Which is where we came in. I’m content to leave it there as we’re going in circles bro.

In your scheme of things God is an ISTE and you replace with an INTE (Invented Natural Thingamajig Excuse)
It’s an invented thingamajig when it’s regarded as your mind

It’s evidence that the minds we know are related to brains - and that is all.
What is the precise mechanism by which the brain thinks and is aware of itself?
Again, you’re confusing theory with evidence.

An evasion which amounts to a lack of evidence and an inadequate theory
NeoDarwinist propaganda has induced them to believe in an INTE
Pretty pictures from MRI scanners have nothing to do with neo-Darwinism, we just look and see the evidence, that can’t be a conspiracy.

Evidence that minds are often related to brains
What branch of physical science is that?
Cognitive neuroscience.

Then it is not an intangible self. Where precisely is it located and observed? How can it be recognised?
We are persons made in the image of God.
Which is where we came in. I’m content to leave it there as we’re going in circles bro.

You’re very content - and very relieved - to leave it there because you know full well that we are not made in the image of an INTE!

Die creationism, die!!

Yes, the tragedy is that people like Edwest2 and other ID proponents here do not realize just how much damage is done to apologetics, i.e. to the salvation of souls, by the ID movement. They mean well, but in the meantime they fuel destruction – exactly the opposite from their certainly good intentions.

I know of someone who a year or two ago converted to Catholicism after having been an agnostic and then an atheist, inspired by Dawkins’ The God Delusion. He considered conversion only after having learned that the Catholic Chuch accepts evolution.

Of course, the acceptance of evolution by the Church is not a reason for atheists to convert, but it certainly is a prerequisite to do so. The importance of this cannot be underestimated, and the whole promotion of ID (ID in the sense of irreducible biological complexity and interventionist design) by some Catholics (not the Church) just confuses, clouds and obfuscates the issue.

Hi Al,

The first item is that science is silent about God and the supernatural.

Second, the biology textbook gives non-God related causes as being sufficient for the creation of life.

Third, where in Church teaching is any scientific theory a necessary prerequisite?

Fourth, the Church tells us that God cannot be excluded as a causal agent.

That’s all I’m saying. The Church’s mission is to preach the Gospel to the whole world.

I find aspects of Intelligent Design credible, that’s all.

Peace,
Ed

I’m happy to go on but don’t feel we’re communicating any more. For example, you say the self doesn’t appear in any scientific papers, I link to just one piece of work which proves you wrong and instead of acknowledging that, you now want a precise definition of self when you can see from the work that it’s totally unnecessary.

Your pet theory is comprehensively falsified by loads of evidence, you’ve not presented any contradictory evidence, all you done is dig in your heels. It’s like debating a believer in alien abductions or conspiracy theories bro, you’re so firmly welded to your theory that no amount of evidence will change your mind, and after a point I think what’s the point. 🙂

I find aspects of Intelligent Design credible, that’s all.
That’s a respectable position. The problem is the far greater numbers who don’t take to ID because of any evidence or merit in the idea itself but purely as a negative reaction to prop up their worldview, leaving a strong impression that Christians can’t cope with reality.

Can Anyone can list ten scientific facts that are in accord with the Bible, and support the theory of Evolution?

Welcome Jon.

Some say Gen 3:19 is about abiogenesis, Gen 1:11-12 is about biogenesis and Job 30:5-6 is about cave men. But then they also say 2 Peter 3:10 is about nuclear fission.

:rotfl:

Why they would do this I don’t know. Presumably they want to read science into the Bible because they think science is more powerful than religion.

There are many people who “believe in ID” but have no idea what it is.

There are even more people who “don’t believe in ID”, but have no idea what it is.

Should you condemn ID because of the people who have no idea what it is?

Hey, I “know all about” Baptists. Those are the folks who go to military funerals and have placards saying that the deceased are going to hell. Right? Here’s the true story of Baptists. It must be right, it’s on Wikipedia.

I know of someone who a year or two ago converted to Catholicism after having been an agnostic and then an atheist, inspired by Dawkins’ The God Delusion. He considered conversion only after having learned that the Catholic Chuch accepts evolution.
Wow. You have a sample of 1 to support your position. That’s impressive.
Of course, the acceptance of evolution by the Church is not a reason for atheists to convert, but it certainly is a prerequisite to do so.
Is it a prerequisite for atheist conversion that they accept the resurrection? If atheists demand a scientific church, it would seem to me that this would be a significant barrier.
The importance of this cannot be underestimated, and the whole promotion of ID (ID in the sense of irreducible biological complexity and interventionist design) by some Catholics (not the Church) just confuses, clouds and obfuscates the issue.
God intervenes. Certainly you get that. Creation is intervention. Miracles are intervention. LOVE requires intervention, it is not a hands-off process.

With regard to irreducible complexity, I think the most you can say is that the jury is out on that at this point. You cannot logically insist that you know it will never be found, unless you are speaking from faith alone.

BTW - you seem to equate “God intervening” with ID. 🤷

Can Anyone can list ten scientific facts that are in accord with the Bible, and support the theory of Evolution?
First you have to ask you self what it means for there to be a bible. This is to ask a very reasonable and necessary question. Is our religion based purely on the face value of the bible alone, or is the bible in fact a theological and allegorical tool (with many contextual layers of the literal and historical) for the purpose of expressing and preserving an underlying belief system which already existed long before there ever was a bible; scripture being the expression of a faith rooted in the divine mystical experience of God and the spiritual reflection of that knowledge. Or is the bible simply an historical document, the purpose of which was merely to chronicle amazing tales of the miraculous which we are commanded to see as absolutely literal, a literalism upon which we must base our whole religious identity even at the expense of reason and evidence to the contrary? What is the purpose or intention of the bible? What came first: the religious tradition and spiritual culture in which scripture became prominent, or was it the bible? In what sense or context do we interpret the bible. In light of what history exactly?

In other-words; are we “sola scripture”, or are we “Catholic”? Does divine tradition come first, or does scripture come first?

We cannot simply say that science is against the bible when we haven’t even first given any light to the culture and the historical context in which and through which the bible emerged.

Dealing with these questions objectively, seem to me at least to be the more responsible course of action. Don’t you agree?

Wow. You have a sample of 1 to support your position. That’s impressive.

Is it a prerequisite for atheist conversion that they accept the resurrection? If atheists demand a scientific church, it would seem to me that this would be a significant barrier.
No scientific theory argues against the possibility of the resurrection. No scientific theory argues against the possibility of miracles. Science presents no barriers to a reasonable and honest faith that respects the objective evidence which is shared to us in the spirit of intellectual development. All responsible scientists will tell you that the applied sciences have nothing to say about the supernatural, accept in special cases where the scientific method is used (sometimes by the command of wise religious leaders) to determine whether or not a physical explanation is more reasonable than an alleged miracle; especially when that miracle is contrary to the components of the Catholic faith. When the physical evidence happens to give a better explanation than the apparent miracle, it is the responsibility of any moral person to speak up about it so that we are not hoodwinked by desperate religious fundamentalists such as yourself. Therefore your response is ludicrous, since it is proposing that we should have a gullible faith that has no intellectual responsibility to science.

The possibility that a unification can occur between science and faith without error or dishonesty on either side of the spectrum, saved my faith and my life! Young earth Creationism, along with geocentricism and a flat earth, was destroying it.

No scientific theory argues against the possibility of the resurrection. No scientific theory argues against the possibility of miracles.

Science can, or will explain everything eventually. So many scientists say.

I’m an engineer. I am not a desperate religious fundamentalist. I agree that science and religion can often easily reconcile. But the fact remains that at some point there will be 2 contradictory views - one scientific and one religious. This may be on the issue of “young earth” or “evolution” or “the resurrection”, or something else. If atheist conversion insists that religious views must conform to scientific views, then eventually the atheist will find something that will be a barrier to his conversion.
The possibility that a unification can occur between science and faith without error or dishonesty on either side of the spectrum, saved my faith
and my life! Young earth Creationism, along with geocentricism and a flat earth, was destroying it.
I’m not a geocentrist, flat earthist, or young earth creationist. I’m not aware of any posters here at CAF that actually fit all those categories, although there may be some.

Praise be to God that your particular barrier was removed in your case, and you came to God.

Science can, or will explain everything eventually. So many scientists say…
Thats a philosophical idea or ideal shared among some scientists; but it is not science. I am sure you can find some deluded scientists who do not know where science ends and philosophy starts. That doesn’t reveal anything about the subject of science itself, and the fact remains that science cannot prove any theory that goes beyond the objective evidence. A scientists can only go as far as the evidence. The scientific method does not reveal the assertion of universal naturalism as being true, and many honest and trustworthy scientists will tell you that universal naturalism is an ideology not a science, and that in fact it is impossible to prove with the scientific method that the only thing that can exist is physical reality, and those scientists who say otherwise are not doing science but instead philosophy. Science can explain the functional aspects of physical causes according to recognized laws of behavior, but it cannot explain by definition of its epistemological limitations why physical laws - as a whole - exist. That is a metaphysical questions; not a scientific one.
I’m an engineer. I am not a desperate religious fundamentalist.
It does not follow from the fact of being an engineer that you are not a desperate religious fundamentalist. There may very well be in existence engineers that are religious fundamentalists. Titles don’t impress me.
But the fact remains that at some point there will be 2 contradictory views - one scientific and one religious.
Such as? Explain one true scientific theory that contradicts a core teaching of the Catholic faith.
This may be on the issue of “young earth” or “evolution” or “the resurrection”, or something else…
There is no scientific theory that contradicts the idea or the possibility of a resurrection empowered by a transcendent divine entity. You assert otherwise without giving a thorough demonstration of a real scientific theory that you haven’t confused with somebodies opinion just because they are wearing a lab coat.
If atheist conversion insists that religious views must conform to scientific views, then eventually the atheist will find something that will be a barrier to his conversion…
You are misrepresenting the power of science. People who reject the faith over science do not truly understand the faith. People who reject science for the Catholic faith, do not understand the true nature of their Catholic faith or science.
I’m not a geocentrist, flat earthist, or young earth creationist. I’m not aware of any posters here at CAF that actually fit all those categories, although there may be some.
.
If you are none of these, then perhaps you can explain why you feel that science contradicts the faith?

Pope Benedict:

"In comments to students, published yesterday in German, the Pope – who took office in April 2005 – stopped short of endorsing intelligent design and said “faith alone” could not “explain the whole picture”.

"But, he said: “We cannot haul 10,000 generations into the laboratory.”

"He advised the students not to choose between creationism and evolutionary theory but to adopt “an interaction of various dimensions of reason”.

"He said: “I find it important to underline that the theory of evolution implies questions that must be assigned to philosophy and which themselves lead beyond the realms of science.”

“Benedict reflected on comments of his predecessor, John Paul II, who said that theories of evolution were sound as long as they took into account that creation was the work of God, and that Darwin’s theory of evolution was “more than a hypothesis.”

"He said: “The pope [John Paul] had his reasons for saying this. But it is also true that the theory of evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory.”

“Benedict added that the immense time span that evolution covers made it impossible to conduct experiments in a controlled environment to verify or disprove the theory.”

Peace,
Ed

Wow. You have a sample of 1 to support your position. That’s impressive.
This was just to show that I personally know someone whose situation stands for the plainly obvious and universal. Or do you think that an atheist who is thoroughly informed about evolution could convert if s/he thought that belief in biological ID was required for accceptance of the Catholic faith? Dream on.
God intervenes. Certainly you get that. Creation is intervention. Miracles are intervention. LOVE requires intervention, it is not a hands-off process.
Of course all this is true, and I agree. But that is beside the point of the question if interventionist biological ID is true or not.
BTW - you seem to equate “God intervening” with ID. 🤷
You only say that because you haven’t followed my thoughts very well as I explained them on this board over time.

I agree with the above. However, scientists regularly opine about how “this or that” is a religious delusion because science says it can’t be so.
It does not follow from the fact of being an engineer that you are not a desperate religious fundamentalist. There may very well be in existence engineers that are religious fundamentalists. Titles don’t impress me.
I am an engineer. This is a fact.
I am not a religious fundamentalist. This is a fact.
I stated so above.
Perhaps you think I am lying?

Indeed there may very well be religious fundamentalist engineers.
Such as? Explain one true scientific theory that contradicts a core teaching of the Catholic faith.
That human intelligence “emerged” via evolutionary processes. That morality “emerged” via evolutionary processes. That there is no purpose to the universe. That humans are merely advanced animals and nothing more. Science says these things are True. The Church says they are “not True.” No doubt, you will define for your own arguments that “science is speaking beyond it’s capabilities.” So tell that to the scientists. Regardless of whether or not it is “really science”, these “incompatibilities with what scientists are saying” in fact become stumbling blocks to atheists converting because they contract Church teaching.
There is no scientific theory that contradicts the idea or the possibility of a resurrection empowered by a transcendent divine entity. You assert otherwise without giving a thorough demonstration of a real scientific theory that you haven’t confused with somebodies opinion just because they are wearing a lab coat.
I am very familiar with lab coats. And scientific arguments.
I am not impressed with people in lab coats. You are mistaken.
You are misrepresenting the power of science.

No, we agree that the power of science is limited. The things I mention are heard all the time by notable scientists. The scientists are misrepresenting the power of science. You have me confused with the very people we are both against.
MindOverMatter2;8008701:
People who reject the faith over science do not truly understand the faith.
I would argue that people who accept science over faith do not truly understand the limitations of science.
People who reject science for the Catholic faith, do not understand the true nature of their Catholic faith or science.
I don’t know any Catholics who reject “science” (generic). Should we reject embryonic stem cell research even though the scientific community is overwhelmingly for it? Of course.
