The correct translation of “calix” is cup or drinking vessel not chalice. “Chalice” is the english word derived from “calix” but is not its translation. In modern english usage, a chalice is a jeweled golden cup. The previous translation as “cup” is closer to the latin and had far more dignity. Now we are presented with the rather comical image of Jesus taking a golden chalice at the Last Supper. This is what happens when you start doing a translation with an agenda. Hopefully in ten years or so we will have a more accurate, free flowing and pastoral translation.guess us oldtimers are not in our right mind when we instinctively repeat the words and gestures we grew up with, thanks for the reminder, when I forge my meds I forget how non compos I really am. Just because the present generation is bone ignorant of Latin gives them no right to criticize those who have gone before. If the Latin says it was a chalic, it is a chalice. If it said basin, crater, dish, styrofoam cup or thermos, that is what the translation would be.
