Critics slam HBO show that mocked Catholic devotion to Jesus

New York City, N.Y., Oct 28, 2009 / 10:55 pm (CNA).- Catholic critics have reacted to an HBO show that had a scene showing a painting of Jesus being urinated on and which also mocked Catholic devotion to Jesus. They have questioned an apparent double standard in the treatment of religions and have called for an apology from the show’s producers.

In the most recent episode, the elderly David goes to the bathroom in a Catholic home and splatters urine on a painting of Jesus without cleaning it up. A Catholic woman goes to the bathroom, sees the liquid on the picture and believes that Jesus is crying. She calls to her mother, who joins her. They both kneel in prayer.

Donohue of the Catholic League appeared on Fox and Friends this morning. He has received lots of support from Christians and Jews regarding this HBO show. Most see it as mocking all Christians.

I’m surprised there wasn’t more of an uproar over the Simpsons where Bart is portrayed as the saviour and Marge says something to the effect about who would eat the body and drink the blood of their saviour.

Well maybe because Bart and Marge are cartoon chacters, not live people doing this.
Of course, a lot of people might not have gotten Marge’s statement as it relates to Catholics, or just ingnored it completely.
 
i don’t find Marge Simpson’s dialogue offensive. its more reflective of people who do not understand our faith

but to urinate on a picture, there’s nothing un-offensive about that from any angle

Well, technically speaking, he didn’t urinate “on” the picture. He was using the toilet and a few drops splashed onto the picture.
 
It’s really awful. I can’t believe they played that on TV. It’s just so low-class and so obviously disrespectful of people’s beliefs.

I certainly couldn’t have HBO after this… (not that I had it anyway, but I would cancel it if I did)
 
Really terrible. It’s a shame how two-faced the media is lately. They protect other groups rights except ours.
