Actually, in the city where I live in the Philippines, masses are at 3 AM as well as at 4 AM, early masses that continue for 9 days until Christmas. The people of the Philippines, who are very devout, are now crowding into churches for mass at these times. See

Thanks for sharing this part of our culture. Even someone like me tries to attend all 9 mornings of Simbang Gabi. 😃

Now if you’ll excuse me… collapses from lack of sleep

Wow that is awesome that the people are so committed to their faith that they are willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning or late night and go to Mass. I believe I would go to Mass at such hours as well but I am different from them in that I always stay up all night anyway and wouldn’t have to wake up to go so it would be easier for me than it is for them I think.

I am so impressed! 👍

You (the Philipines and the people who do this devotion) are a blessing to the Catholic faith!

Yes, they most definitely are a blessing to the Catholic faith! May God be praised now and forever for their faithfulness and devotion to the Church!

Last night I attended the fifth night of Simbang Gabi at my parish in Maryland. Our masses are at 7:30 pm. What is the point of masses so early in the morning?

The Masses are offered here at 4:45am in Tagalog. Many of the parishioners are Filipino.

My diocese also has Simbang Gabi Masses. They are in the evenings. I am not Filipino, so I have no background on the tradition of holding them in the early morning. I guess then folks can go to Mass having fasted all night, have a big breakfast, and still get to work on time?
