On July 26, 2012, Bishop Gerald Kicanas, chairman of CRS’ board of directors, wrote a letter to the bishops to inform them that CRS would not renew its contract with AKA Printing and Mailing because it is owned by the family of Judie Brown, president of American Life League (ALL). AKA was founded by Paul Brown, Judie’s husband, and is currently run by their son Hugh Brown.
AKA has been doing business with CRS for over a decade. From 2009 to 2012, AKA was CRS’ largest independent contractor, according to CRS’ 990s, receiving over $7 million in contracts over that period. (See CRS’ 990s here: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012).
In his letter, Bishop Kicanas says CRS would end its largest printing contract with AKA as of September 30, 2012 after learning “recently” that AKA is owned by Brown’s family and “maintains a close affiliation with ALL.”
"While the board and I welcome all constructive questions about the work of CRS, we have strongly disagreed with the manner used by ALL in raising its concerns, including tactics used against the USCCB, its members, staff, and programs,” the bishop writes.

From the article:*Asked if there might be a double standard in the fact that CRS defends its multi-million dollar grants to pro-abortion groups but cut off a printing company because of its association with a pro-life group that criticizes it, Vogt responded that he believes the question “paints an extremely misleading picture.”

“CRS grants only go toward noble projects like providing food, water, and healthcare,” he said. “When they work alongside other groups toward these ends, the money used is non-fungible, meaning it cannot be used for objectionable ends. Therefore insinuating that CRS gives grants which promote the culture of death is disingenuous.”*So what’s the real scoop? Does CNS “fund” pro-abortion activity or not?

I think it is disingenuous to say that Group X will use the money only for the portion that does not promote immoral actions; obvious Group X will have more money available for that portion of its activities if someone gives the group money for the “safe” portion of its activities.

And this is not to mention the scandal given when Catholics align themselves with groups which promote immoral actions.

I would say more, but … too

If that is the arrangement, my instinct is to agree with you.

Someone at the CRS does not know the meaning of fungible. Money is not just a general ledger entry, but is always fungible and can aid in the entire expansion of a organization with dual purposes.
So what’s the real scoop? Does CNS “fund” pro-abortion activity or not?
Yes.

Good riddance!

Bishop Gerald Kicanas did well to disassociate CRS from an organization that thinks it can bully Church leaders in an effort to further their own agenda.

I hope this trend continues and organizations like ALL, who use McCarthy-like “guilt-by-association” tactics to undermine good men like Cardinal Seán O’Malley and good programs like the CCHD, will continue to see** themselves defunded.**

As for ALL’s Pro-Life credentials - Catholic Bishops do not support the use of graphic images of aborted babies by pro-life organizations and the American Life League not only uses them, but uses them for fundraising - that is just sick. The editors of LifeSiteNews have an agenda and won’t tell you the whole story, they may even endorse the practice, but seeking to profit from the deaths of babies is immoral no matter what the motivation behind it may be.

Not all Catholic Bishops oppose abortion images.

Archbishop Charles Chaput said regarding an abortion image exhibit
The exhibits on campus show the inhumanity of abortion and do so in serious and persuasive ways. The medical and emotional consequences of abortion are shown in a loving and non-condemning manner.

Bishop says abortion is like the Holocaust
The Right Reverend Joseph Devine claimed such imagery brought home the evil of the Third Reich and that pictures of aborted foetuses could be used in the same way to illustrate the reality of terminating a pregnancy.
His comments came after two Christian pro-life campaigners who unfurled banners showing aborted foetuses outside a clinic were cleared of public order offences by a judge.
Bishop Devine said: “Such images should not be suppressed from the public consciousness any more than pictures of famine or the reality of war.
“If we cannot face the pictures, how can we conceive of endorsing the reality?”
He added: “I have no doubt that the publication of the photographs of the victims of Auschwitz and the Burma Railway brought home the horrors of such evil catastrophes far more effectively than a million pleading words.
Excerpt from letter from Rt. Rev. John Braganza
There is nothing, to my knowledge, contrary to Catholic teaching in the use of the graphics and the content of the arguments that CCBR employs. In fact the arguments are profoundly Catholic!
When one considers how graphics are used by the media to promote vice and violence, one ought not to have any objection when graphics of the mutilated aborted children are employed to promote the protection of the unborn and unmask the evil of a crime goes daily unrecognized. The principle of showing the results of a crime in order to prevent it is not new. The unnerving difference here is that the crime is perpetrated against the voiceless and defenseless unborn child.

There is a difference between raising awareness and raising money. The American Life League used graphic images to raise money. Given that most of their supporters are pro-life, what purpose did it serve except to exploit the deaths of babies as shock value in order to increase donations.

Sorry, but terminating life is what we, as a society, do!

It is reality!

And where does the money go that ALL receives? It goes to save the lives of babies who have not yet been aborted!

Yes.
What the fungible does that mean:)

Protestant pro-life news sites have been on the attack against the CRS for years. So they are not going to use them to print stuff. 🤷 What did the LSN and the ALL want? To keep beating up the CRS for its lunch money? You do not keep calling someone a liar and smear their name and then expect them to keep smiling, saying, “Thank you sir. May I have another?” I haven’t been able to stand LSN for years because of their inaccuracy and anticatholic bias. I am not surprised other Catholics feel the same way.

What the fungible does that mean:)
It means the funds can be used, eventually, in any manner the organization that receives them want to use them. For example, if you give money to PP to help provide for breast exams, they are then able to use the money that last year they used to do breast exams and fund abortion. Your funds to do something good, freed up the funds of PP to do something bad.

In the case of CRS, the services were not being funded at all. Without the funds they gave, the aid would not have been given. That is why the CRS said the funds were not fungible.

uh,lifesite and all aren’t Protestant . i’m sure they have Protestants on staff.the founding staff of lifesite are steve jalsevac and john westen. westen is Catholic and i believe jalsevac is. as for all i’ll post co-founder judy browns bonifides
It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life education organization in the United States
.
Judie Brown is president and co-founder of American Life League, the nation’s largest grassroots pro-life educational organization. ALL started in 1979 and has grown from a kitchen table operation to a full-fledged professional organization with more than sixty full time employees and outreach throughout the nation.
Judie has served three five-year terms (1996-2011) as a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life in Rome. Daily Catholic cited her as one of the top 100 Catholics of the 20th century. She has distinguished herself as an unapologetic pro-life leader who has also written 12 books, including the most recent Saving Those Damned Catholics: A Defense of Catholic Teaching (2007) and The Broken Path: How Catholic Bishops Got Lost in the Weeds of American Politics (2011).
Judie has been instrumental, through American Life League, in getting many pro-life organizations started including Human Life International, Priests for Life and Pro Life Action League. ALL has a 29 year history of helping organizations grow as Judie advances the cause of personhood for every innocent human being from their creation. Her main focus has been and continues to be respect for the dignity of the human person.

I apologize. They are** non-**Catholic. I have found them to be anticatholic and inaccurate.

I guess they are not even necessarily Christian? I am glad that groups can work together for support against life issues, but attacking your partners is not working together. Then complaining because they do not want to hire you to do printing???

they are Catholic, have they been excommunicated ? and ALL doesn’t own the print shop ,one of the owners son does .how Catholic is it to visit the alleged sins of the father on the son and in this economy, on the employees? in a county with a 9% unemployment rate

they are Catholic, have they been excommunicated ?
An organization can not be in communion, so an organization can not be excommunicated. They are non-Catholic because they are not a Catholic apostolate. I went to their page and they declare no specific religion. I guess you can say they are primarily Judeo-Christian. Thus, they are non-Catholic.
LifeSiteNews.com emphasizes the social worth of traditional Judeo-Christian principles but is also respectful of all authentic religions and cultures that esteem life, family and universal norms of morality.
According to Bishop Kicanas, he had already decided to send the letter informing the publishing company that the CRS had decided to diversify their printing contracts. The irony does not escape me that LSN is crying foul for this. Their complaint against the CRS was that they gave funds for a project to CARE who in turn gave difference funds to others to provide birth control. They believed the funds to be fungible. Yet in this case we have LSN who controls ALL who is associated with AKA. So guilt by association only works one way?

In the end, so much of the bad that happens boils down to humans who make bad decisions. I believe it to be wrong to punish (if that is what happened) a family member’s business for something another person in the family did. However, the Board met. Is there a moral obligation to do printing with this company as opposed to another? No. The people who voted to go elsewhere with the contract may have been influenced in their vote by what the mother did. That is the nature of people. It is why, as I said before, it is not wise to attack those who are on your side.
