I agree with Marie that your Mom i am guessing is getting up there in age and she will tend to start forgetting many things. If she remembers the prayers of the rosary it is because it is deep down in her spirit maybe the only words she will remember before she goes onto heaven. I think you can be thankful for this but don’t miss the oportunity to pray this with her because you will regret it and will miss the chance as is what will make the devil happy. My Mom had triple by-pass two years ago and we got her back. She wasn’t sure why she couldn’t go now she is 85. We had just finished reading there is purpose for everyone together but I had not come back to the faith yet. And then I did and I was taught the rosary and re-taught my Mom and we did it together. so there was a purpose in God’s plan. Please don’t miss this Newbi because after she is gone you won’t be hearing her anymore and you will be doing your own traditions and can ditch everything you have been taught. But you won’t have her prayers ither as I learned all those rosary’s were for me and I hope you find some one that you care so much about that you will be on your knees for so long looking at what Jesus did for us and pray. I also hope you took your laptop. dessert
YES! The whole purpose of the Rosary is to focus on CHRIST! If your mom has been focusing on Mary, she has missed WHO Mary has been trying to point her to. CHRIST!

Obviously before you could in good conscience do this, you have to learn the real teachings of the Catholic church to know that the rosary is not vain repetition nor idol worship.

But if all you family carries those around, you have a powerful witnessing tool that they are all familar with. Why not show them the REAL reason one prays the rosary, CHRIST!

Notice, I am assuming you are correct and your family does practice idol worship. But remember there is a possibility that you misunderstood but they do not. Be open to this humbling thought, if you choose to push forward and witness the True Christ and gospel of the Catholic Church, and not what you believe they practice.

We are saved by Grace, through faith in Christ alone. This message is beautifully witnessed in the Rosary and in the true teaching of the Catholic Church.

God Bless,
Maria

I’m really curious about this statement now newbie. Do you seriously take the time to ask every single person you meet in the street who’s wearing a crucifix or Rosary to explain to you exactly why they’re doing so? If I did that it’d be two hours or more of my day gone every day.

How many roughly HAVE you asked so far and out of those how many have given you the answer that ‘it protects me’ and also voluntarily added ‘I have very little faith in God?’ Sounds like you’re making that bit up, newbie, unless you claim the ability to read their minds and hearts.
I have a street ministry where I talk to scores of people every week.Check my earlier posts on other threads. I have spoken about this ministry before.

I would love to see Newbie1234 answer to this, but we may have to wait 5 days…

I would also add that having a Rosary in one pocket and a Rosary Ring in the other, I am often moved to prayer and reminded to pray.

Prior to having these items, my prayer life really did suck…Satan was winning a great battle…now?..he is in a state of perpetual retreat…
I have said thousands of Hail Mary’s.I would pray the whole rosary some nights. I thought it got me closer to God but after a while it was by wrote. I wasn’t even paying attention to the words. I could recite them without even thinking. Same way with the aposltes creed and most of the other catholic prayers. Now when I pray I speak directly to God in my own words.
When saying grace before a meal it is not a memorized prayer that has no meaning, but something that comes from the heart and is relevant to things that happened that day.
My prayer life has completely changed since I stopped saying those repetitious prayers. My relationship with God has grown tremendously.
By the way I am a former 4th degree Sir Knight in the KofC.
And those men that I hung around with were a major reason for my leaving catholicism.

Yes my Rosary and Crucifix do protect me. They are a part of my Armor of God.

The Crucifix is my shield against Satan because it is the constant reminder of Jesus did for me on the Cross. As Paul writes:
and as John writes:
The Crucifix also reminds me to always pick up my own Cross and follow Christ as spoken by Jesus:

The Rosary is my sword that pierces the heart of Satan and his wicked Angels by keeping me in continuous Godly Prayer.

Don’t knock the Physical tools God has given us.

Here is a challenge to you while you are snowboarding. Give God A Tenth of your time by snowboarding for 54 minutes and then pray for 6 minutes.

Even better, give God a Tenth of your time in prayer. That is 144 minutes of prayer. hmmmmmmmmm what a coincidence that 10% of 24 hours is 144 minutes. Can you pray for 144 minutes straight?
The whole armor of God is listed in Ephesions 6. Open a bible and read about it. Rosaries aren’t mentioned.

My mom is an EM and she practically runs her church.
She’s got ALL her marbles.
I remember her telling me: when she was a little girl in Brooklyn she would not even brush her teeth on Sunday morning before church so as not to sin and break the pre communion fast. So who taught her all this madness?
I appreciate all the concern for my mother.
I love her and I want her to be with me in heaven but all the rosaries in the world will not get her there no matter if they are idolatrous or not.
Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus.
Prayers to Mary are not even in the equation.
Think about this: the ratio on the rosary is 10 to 1.
Ten for Mary, one Our Father(the prayer Jesus expressly told us to pray)
Don’t you find this unbalanced.?

Question. How is salvation by grace through faith witnessed in the rosary?
Because the Rosary is Christ’s life, death and Reserection.

There are many different levels and understandings that one can reach while praying to God and meditating on the life, death and resurection of Christ. I am trying to give the ones that specifically answer your question on how the salvation by grace through faith is witnessed in the Rosary.

Joyful mysteries
  1. The Annunciation. Luke 1 The Angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will bear a son. This will happen through the grace of God when the Holy Spirit overshadows her. The Holy Spirit does not just infused into her soul, but in a more intimate way than ever before or since.
Mary’s faith and simple obedience is a model for us to follow. We see what our response to God should be. We can question things, but our response should be Yes even without all the T’s crossed. Faith that God will take care of you even when you don’t know exactly how it will come about. (Note, Mary’s question “How will this happen” was very different than Sarah’s question. Mary’s was simple, “I don’t understand, how, can you explain more?” Sarah’s when told she would have a child in old age was “How can this happen” as in disbelief that it could happen.)
  1. The Visitation. Luke 1 Mary visits Elizabeth. The baby in Elizabeth’s womb jumps for joy when he recognizes His savior. This recognition was only possible through the gift of grace from God. It also shows how even infants can be born again in the Spirit:)
  2. The Nativity. Christ is Born. So many different levels of faith here exhibited by Mary, the wise men, the shepherds. But I think you can see how the grace of God worked here.
I actually have to go right now. But I will get back to this later.

Maybe you could comment on what I have already written? And how is the snowboarding going:) (Where is the I’m jealous but happy for you icon:D )

Maria

Tuesday was great conditions
Wednesday a little icey.
So when you pray the rosary you are thinking of the Joyful mysteries?
Each decade(SP) or ten hail mary’s is another mystery

Don’t you find this unbalanced.?
But, just as the late Pope John Paul II used to say, the Hail Mary is itself also a Christocentric prayer. And if you didn’t notice, the word in the middle of the prayer is ‘Jesus’. Our Lord’s name is the one that links the whole prayer together.

And, why didn’t you count the ‘Glory Be’ and the ‘Apostle’s Creed’? Also the Fatima Prayer, ‘O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy’.

the Joyful mysteries are recommended for Monday and Saturday.
The Sorrowful mysteries are recommended for Tuesdays and Fridays
  1. The agony of Jesus in the Garden
  2. The Scourging at the pillar
  3. The crowning of thorns
  4. The carrrying of the cross
  5. The Crucifixion.
The Glorious mysteries are recommended for Wednesdays and Sunday
  6. The Ressurrection
  7. The Ascension
  8. The Decent of the Holy Spirit
  9. The Assumption of Mary
  10. The coronation of Mary
The Luminous mysteries recommended for Thursdays
  11. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan
  12. The wedding at Cana.
  13. The proclamation of the Kingdom of God.
  14. The Transfiguration
  15. The institution of the Eucharist.
The Rosary is a reflection of Christ’s life, including His Blessed Mother. How is it that you can have such problems with a Rosary and have no idea what the prayers are about. The Blessed Virgin leads us ALWAYS straight to Jesus. It is never about her, she would have it no other way. He loved his mother why shouldn’t we?? And one last thing, The Our Father encompasses exactly what happens in the Mass. I think if you try to recall what goes on at the Mass you will see this, better yet GO and sit in the back and really listen and look with an open heart and you will see that His “will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. Get yourself a copy of The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn, you WILL be amazed. Have fun on the slopes.

Yes, when one properly prays the Rosary, one is thinking of each individual mystery. The mysteries help one to meditate and understand different aspects of our Lord. As shown above, there are different mysteries, each focusing on a different part of Christ’s life.

The Joyful mysteries focus on His birth.
The Luminous mysterires focus on His ministry while on earth.
The Sorrowful mysteries focus on his crucifixion. (Mel Gibson’s movie is basically the sorrowful mysteries brought to visual life.)
The Glorious mysteries focus on His resurrection.

Vain repetition could be possible while reciting the prayers of the rosary if one is just saying the words without really thinking about what one is supposed to. One is supposed to be focused on Christ while reciting the words and prayers in the Rosary.

Glad Tuesday was good, and at least icy is better than not being there:D

:yup: That sounds like mine used to be too. And my stomach was growling so bad it was a good thing the organ was louder.
My concern is also for you. sorry to get to you so late i have been working alot. dessert

As Catholics, we believe that salvation is only through Christ. Mary prays for us, and offers our prayers to Christ, but only Christ made the sacrifice to save us.

This is a bit off topic but do you think some Catholics have a hard time praying to Christ because of being more close to their mother than their father, maybe not having a good father image in their life? dessert

The thing is, it seems to me that it’s not all bad to have a very folklore-filled life. Obviously you don’t want to go over the edge to superstition, and yet… there’s a lot to be said for weird little family customs. They give flavor. And considering that we worship the guy who rubbed spit-blended mud on people’s eyes, we really shouldn’t be too holy-go-pious and grossed out by a few weird little things.

I don’t see anything really wrong with your mom making up a little bag of blessings and prayers to God, praying for you in your car. If she thought it was magic and compelled God, that would be wrong, or at least uninformed. If she was just following a pious practice with love and prayer, that’s very touching and sweet. After all, we are supposed to be praying all the time, in everything we do.

Also, don’t be too hard on people who misinformed you. Sometimes people assume we understand a context which we don’t. Sometimes they don’t know what they’re talking about, and it may well not be their fault. And sometimes they know, but express themselves badly.

Don’t be too hard on your family, in short. Everybody’s family is a little bit crazy, but then, so is everybody.

That is all so true but when I was growing up in the sixties I used to burn incense you know the different scents they had in thhose days and my mother was very upset because to her it was only for church and it was a sacrilidge not spelling it right so to her everything was a sacralidge. For example you could not wear white lace only if you were pure and never wear black only to funerals. Now I understand blessed holy water and even blessed salt and God’s blessing on things by a priest is special and honoring God. Why else would we have blessings if not to honor God? dessert

Hey newbey, people here are trying to explain to you what the Holy Rosary of the Virgin Mary entails, and you come back with cynical remarks.
Obviously you worship God your way, so why don’t you start another denomination and join the many who have already done that.
God will sort it all out in the end, and you can do all your explaining with all the others then.
Till then you worship God your way, and us who are blessed to know the whole truth as revealed to us by the bride of Christ the Church, will worship God His way.

Have a good day.

I have said thousands of Hail Mary’s and never thought of any mysteries whatsoever.
Maybe I was taught wrong.
If I remember correctly:
3 Our Father’s and a Glory Be to start
Then 10 Hail Mary’s followed by an Our Father. Repeat 5 Times.
Finish with A Glory Be.
I was never taught to be thinking of anything but the prayer I was saying at the time. No cynicism.
If I was saying a Hail Mary, wouldn’t it distract me to be thinking of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane or something like that.

Where is newbie being cynical in that post?
Well it souds to me like he is being a faultfinding captious critic of our faith to me. My reply includes his previous posts.
But I could be wrong, not the first time.
