D.C. Mask Mandate Exempts Lawmakers and Government Employees

HANNAH BLEAU

23 Jul 2020

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s (D) most recent mask mandate, which orders three-year-olds to cover their faces, exempts lawmakers and government employees while they are “on duty.”

Bowser issued the order Wednesday, mandating everyone over the age of two wear a mask in both indoor and outdoor settings.

“Under the new Mayor’s Order on masks, people must wear a mask when they leave their homes if they are likely to come into contact with another person for more than a fleeting moment,” . . .

While masking mandates across the nation, and in D.C., typically contain several exceptions — exempting the disabled, those who are actively eating, drinking, and people who are “vigorously” exercising — a closer look at Bowser’s executive action shows that the order does not apply to lawmakers, judges, or government employees while they are “on duty.”

“The enforcement provisions of this Order shall not be applied to persons in the judicial or legislative branches of the District government while those persons are on duty; and shall not apply to any employees of the federal government while they are on duty,” the order states.

The Metropolitan Police Department is authorized to enforce the order on all of those ages 18 and older. Violators can be fined up to $1,000.

The mayor’s mask mandate is in effect until at least October 9, 2020.

Bowser’s order comes as officials in both state and local government positions ramp up their enforcement of mask mandates. Florida’s Miami-Dade County, for example, has dedicated a small unit of over three dozen officers to enforce the county’s mask mandate. First, second, and third-time violators can face fines of $50, $100, and $500, respectively. After that, the individual can face jail time.

Broward County, a neighbor to Miami-Dade, also has a mask order, which has generated buzz. While it does not specifically order residents to wear masks in their homes, it limits gatherings to ten and urges residents to enforce the county’s mask requirements within their own homes. . . .

The order states in part (emphasis added):
All persons who reside on any residential property, whether single family or multi-family, and irrespective of whether they own or rent the property, must ensure that all persons on the residential property, including guests, comply with all applicable guidelines of any Broward County Emergency Order, including the facial covering requirements. Residents who fail to ensure compliance with all applicable Broward County Emergency . . .

Yep, more of the old, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

Well, it’s just funny that people who are going out into public on behalf of the people don’t need to wear masks.

Utter lack of leadership.

Two areas of “exemptions” very troubling:
  • exempting themselves from COVID regulations (Deblasio, Lightfoot, Whitmer, now DC)
  • Politicians who call for defunding police, but yet have private security paid for by tax dollars

KMC . . .
exempting themselves from COVID regulations (Deblasio, Lightfoot, Whitmer, now DC)
This is getting to be a pattern.

Reminds me of leftist politicians ramming Obamacare down the throats of the American people and exempting themselves and their aids in their legislation.

Who really cares? I wear a mask to protect others and I only go places where others do the same to protect me. DC is a cesspool. Why waste time getting upset about it?

Who really cares?

A lot of people who see a larger principle than mere “masks”.

It is another instance of Government ordering citizens around in an arbitrary fashion.

There is no scientific evidence masks, the way they are being used, will help stop the pandemic.

Don’t get me wrong i think it will.
But without hard evidence, and VOLUNTARY adherance, there is nothing to this except bullying citizens.

There are no controlled randomized studies asserting the efficacy of this in societies. None.
(I think it COULD be an effective help, but we don’t know that. Especially with people wearing them bwlow their noses, sometimes even on their chin, and constatly fiddling with the germ filters, than touching things.)
I wear a mask to protect others and I only go places where others do the same to protect me.
That’s great. And businesses can do that if they choose too.
DC is a cesspool.
True enough.

Its not just the mask, but this idea that leaders “are above the law.”

I saw a montage recently of a whole host of Dem leaders are parroting the phrase “no one is above the law.” All of those same people support people breaking immigration law, refuse to enforce laws during riots, demand businesses shut down except when they want to use that business, and now exempt themselves from wearing masks.

We should not accept this.

There’s a reason some folks have to be exempted, due to Constitutional reasons as to separation of powers. There is also the political reality: Many folks remember that Congress was exempted from the laws barring discrimination, at least initially.

Are you really surprised that our government leaders are hypocrites? Is this really a new idea? Better yet, does knowing this really change what you or I should do?

Yes. It possibly changes who you vote for among other things.

Well, she likely doesn’t have the power to command federal government employees to do anything while they’re on duty.

I would imagine the relaxation of mandate for the local judges and legislators on duty is because they need to speak and be heard for their job and it’s hard to do that in a mask.

Much ado about nothing.

it should impact your vote.

I also use these examples as teachable moments for my kids

Sure. But does it change whether you wear a mask? It shouldn’t.
But that’s part of the point FrankFletcher.
It is not only about what I (“you”) decide about wearing a mask.

There are others involved.

You can wear a mask.
I am not going to say what I would or would not do.
And others can make THEIR choices too. They can decide for themselves.

Especially since there is no randomized controlled studies on this (so a clear “public health” benefit cannot be claimed). Add in the fact that people wear their masks wrong frequently, and don’t change their germ-catchers (masks) daily in society but DO frequently handle these germ-catchers,
it becomes even more murky as to WHY this is being FORCED upon people.

But you can say that about anyone else.

A trucker training-in a new driver may have very important things to say about safe driving admonitions to a young driver he is teaching.

To the readers here.

You will see a lot of fluffy support from the media about mask mandates.

Just keep in mind there is not one study to support their usage in the sense that I have already outlined.

Don’t get me wrong. I THINK masks can be a good thing in certain limited instances

But the Government is misusing its power to force these on you.

There is not a shread of evidence of this mask usage or mandate benefit though. At least yet.
