D&P’s union chafes under tighter rules

The controversy over Centre PRODH, which Jesuit Father Luis Arriaga used to run, is driving a wedge between D&P and the Canadian bishops.
OTTAWA — The union representing Development and Peace employees says tighter supervision by the Canadian bishops threatens the democratic nature of the lay-run organization and undermines the prophetic vision that motivates their work.

The union report, prepared for a recent meeting of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace’s (D&P) National Council in June, said the world “ is increasingly turning towards a conservative ideology.”

“There is clearly a turn to the right in several societies, as well as in the Universal Church,” it said.

The 7-page document, published June 25 on the blog Soutenons Developpement et paix (soutenondetp.wordpress.com), claims the shift “runs counter to the prophetic vision that gave rise” to D&P’s creation 45 years ago.

A directive by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (CCCB) that requires a support letter from local bishops to approve partner organizations and their projects risks “profoundly transforming” the agency’s approach to development through coalition building, the report said. Many partner organizations might not want to get a bishop’s approval, especially those involved in the empowerment of women, the union`s report said.

The CCCB has been offering guidance to the agency they founded 45 years ago to brings its policies in line with Pope Benedict XVI`s latest social justice encyclical Caritas in Veritate. D&P has been criticized ìn online reports for funding projects in the developing world with partners who are have been accused of being “pro-abortion.”

The Union of Employees of Development and Peace is a member of FEESP-CSN, a federation representing 300,000 public service employees in Quebec, and represents about 60 salaried employees at D&Ps Montreal-based headquarters. On FEESP-CSN website, Jun 23, the D&P union president Marcelle Sinclair said forcing D&P to obtain a letter from the local bishop where they might have partnerships in coalition with groups that do not share the Churchs moral teachings challenges the foundation of their work helping the poor.

Buh-bye D+P,Faithful pew potatoes are sitting on their wallets and we will starve you into submission.Fire all the Professional Catholics and assign orthodox laity and religious to run it.They’ve been outed and no amount of lies, calumny or whining is going to close Pandora’s box.The CCCB look absolutely foolish after defending these vipers and scolding and calumnizing their critics.
I fill my envelope with pro-life material.😃

If the D&P Union wants to be a Catholic organization, then it must operate under the rules of the Church. The Bishop’s have the total and complete authority to demand that they fall in line with the teachings and the rules of the Church.

Of course, they can choose to NOT be Catholic, and then they will no longer fall under the requirement to follow the Bishop’s teachings and requirements.

In effect, they can choose to either be IN the Church, or they can choose to be OUT of the church. If they are IN the Church, then they must follow the rules set down by their countries Bishops.

It’s their choice.

Exactly but like most heterodox catholics they wish to recreate the church in their own image.

This sounds very similar to the Campaign for Human Development herre in the US. In fact, The Bishops had specifically said they wanted to give the money to non-Catholoc organizations!

And the D&P is also working with nom-Catholoc organizations!

What is the point of that? Of all organizations in the world, the Church should be thinking long-term, ie, eternal terms. What is the point of Catholic support for non-Catholic organizations? Esp those which go against the teachings of the Church?

The Church DOES NOT support organizations that are against the teachings of the church. They do support organizations that stand for the same basic things, even if they are not 100% compatible with church teachings. That makes sense, unless you want a situation that is Catholics versus everyone else in the world.

NO CATHOLIC ORGANIZATION CAN WORK WITH ANY GROUP THAT PROMOTES ABORTION. The D&P Union is doing exactly that. That not only puts it beyond the pal, but it puts that organization in support of the murder of innocent babies.

Stop making excuses for this group that is actively working AGAINST the positions of the Catholic Church.

Who is making excuses? (It helps if you quote what you are replying to, even if it’s from the article.)

As a follow up from some earleir D&P news; my Favorite Jesuit (Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, SJ) chimes in on the issue; lifesitenews.com/news/ottawa-archbishop-to-disgruntled-dp-supporters-dont-want-to-be-pro-life-go

Best Quote: * “If the name Catholic is attached you have to be 100 per cent in favor of the cause of life,” the prelate told Deborah Gyapong of Canadian Catholic News in a piece published Wednesday. “If they want to go off and have a group that doesn’t have a Catholic character, let them go off and start something else.”*

The Cliff Notes; “Don’t want to be pro-life? Go start your own group”.
