Da Vinci Plot May Get New Twist to Placate CatholicsDateline: Tuesday, August 9, 2005*Source: The Times, thanks DVB*
So, if they take out religion, the Magdalene, the sacred feminine, Opus Dei, the sex ritual, the Priory of Sion… then, I guess they’ll be left with a great car chase movie…

The film version of The Da Vinci Code is attempting to reduce the offence that the best-selling book caused to Roman Catholics.

Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film starring Tom Hanks and Sir Ian McKellen, is reported to have been so concerned that it has consulted Catholic and other Christian specialists on how it might alter the plot of the novel to avoid offending the devout.

Film officials have held talks with Catholic groups and other organisations despite Dan Brown, the author, insisting that “it’s only a novel and therefore a work of fiction”, The New York Times reported yesterday.

The Catholic League is calling for Ron Howard, the film’s Oscar-winning director, to include a disclaimer acknowledging that the movie is fiction.

The Da Vinci Code, which is being filmed this summer with locations including Winchester Cathedral and Rosslyn Chapel, near Edinburgh, is based on a novel that has sold 25 million copies worldwide. Among its more controversial claims is that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, a former prostitute, and that she bore him a child. This has been denounced as virulently anti-Catholic and a risible hoax.

The studio has been asked to consider whether the central premise — that Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene — could be more ambiguous and whether the name of Opus Dei could be removed.

Condemnation of the book has been widespread. Last month the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales denounced it as logically and historically flawed. In March the Vatican appointed a top cardinal to rebut what it dismissed as lies, distortions and errors.

Sony declined to comment.

I still won’t go to see it. I don’t want to give Dan Brown or anyone involved with this trash one more red cent.

Nor will I.

“it’s only a novel and therefore a work of fiction”, The New York Times reported yesterday.
So was “The Klansman,” the novel which glorified the Ku Klux Klan and was made into a “great” movie – “Birth of a Nation.”

So he’s finally admitting that!? It’s a step in the right direction, anyway.

He has always said thsat but has also said that the information is based in historical fact.

Besides, it was not him, it was film officials that met with Catholic groups.

As for me, garbage is garbage, even with a layer of snow over it. I will still boycott it, Sony who is producing the picture, any movie by Ron Howard (as if has ever made a movie I would want to see), and movie starring Tom Hanks.

I guess I am the odd person here…I actually enjoyed the book…as a work of fiction and I am looking forward to the movie…😃

As your not Catholic…I am sure you could feel quite comfortable with the Catholic bashing. Not terribly odd…just the usual secular attitude that as long as it is not me and mine. In that vain any trash is art. And this novel is pure Trash.

I must disagree with you there: Apollo 13

I read the book, and at first, it was pretty decent suspense fiction, but in the second half, the author got bogged down in his own agenda, and the book became tedious and offensive.

I don’t know where he got his historical “facts”, but I think the premise of the book is a lot of malarkey.

I read it for my book group; it is unlikely I would have picked it up on my own. I have no intention of seeing the movie – it would need a lot more changes than those mentioned to be acceptable to me.

First off I am not bashing any Catholics…my post did not bash Catholics.
You are entitled to your opinion of what trash is…heck some people may say that the Bible is trash in their eyes **(please note: I am not one of those people) . ** So is the thinking that all books of fiction should never talk about the Catholic fate if it goes against church teachings???
But to attack someone because they enjoyed something that you didnt…that sounds really un-Christian to me!

The only thing I found offensive about the book was that Dan Brown insinuated at the start that it was based on fact and history, which is obviously plain nonsense.

As a work of fiction - well, it’s not a very good work of fiction, but I don’t find it offensive. As a purported mix of facts and history, I think he ought to have been a lot more careful the way he phrased his first page. His ‘facts’ have been debunked to death, rightly so.

agreed…i took his “facts based on history” with a grain of salt. I entered into reading this book with the thought that all of these things are false but lets see what kind of story he can weave using them!

I was watching TV last night and the Discovery Channel was advertising a special they will be having about the Da Vinci code, something about changing Christianity and the Bible forever, or some such rot.

Well dear, I did not think you were. If you thought that you are wrong…but I do stand by the “As I am Catholic” …I find it offensive. I certainly don’t expect you to. Nor do I expect you to feel attacked when one states their dislike of Catholic bashing. 🙂

So feel free to discuss it and praise it. But don’t expect those of us who do not like it to soothe non-existant slights. Having lived in the Bible Belt and been Belted with the Bible more times than I care to count…I prefer to stand up and say…trash is not the Bible. The trash is mis-quoting it.

As to fiction…as a writer and a lover of history and Christ…Books on it should reflect truth. I find Dan Brown and company are poor representatives of all of the above.
