Good Friday homily 2010 —by Fr. Cantalamessa – Preacher to Papal Household.

article:
Quote:
“WE HAVE A GREAT HIGH PRIEST”

Preaching on Good Friday 2010 in the Basilica of St. Peter

But there is a more serious and widespread violence of that of youth in stadiums and squares. I am not speaking here of violence against children, which they stained unfortunately also elements of the clergy, it is sufficient talk outside of here. I speak of violence against women. This is an opportunity to make persons and institutions that fight against it understand that Christ is their best ally.

It is a violence all the more serious because it is often carried to the shelter of domestic walls, unknown to all, when it is not actually justified with pseudo-religious and cultural prejudices. The victims find themselves desperately alone and defenseless. Only today, thanks to the support and encouragement of so many associations and institutions, some find the strength to come out and denounce the guilty.

Much of this violence is sexual. It is the male who thinks he can demonstrate his virility by inflicting himself on the woman, not realizing that he is only demonstrating his insecurity and baseness. Even against the woman who made a mistake, what a contrast between the actions of Christ and that still going on in some circles! Fanaticism calls for stoning; Christ, to those who have presented an adulteress, he replied: “Let him who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8: 7). Adultery is a sin that is always committed by two, but for which one has always been (and, in some parts of the world, still is) punished.

Violence against women is never so odious as when it nestles where should reign mutual love and respect in the relationship between husband and wife. It is true that violence is not always and wholly on one side, that you can be violent also with the tongue and not only with his hands, but no one can deny that in the vast majority of cases the victim is the woman.

There are families (even in Italy) where the man still believes himself authorized to raise his voice and hands on the women of the house. His wife and children at times live under the constant threat of '“wrath of Dad.” Such people should say amiably: “Dear fellow men, creating you male, God did not intend to give you the right to be angry and to bang your fist on the table for every little thing. The word addressed to Eve after the fault:” He (the man ) shall rule over you "(Genesis 3:16), was a bitter forecast, not an authorization.

John Paul II inaugurated the practice of the request for forgiveness for collective wrongs. One of them, the most just and necessary, is the forgiveness that half of humanity must ask the other half, men to women. It must not be generic and abstract. Must lead, especially those who profess Christian, to concrete gestures of conversion, to words of apology and reconciliation within families and society.

Please be advised that no one ever said that violence does not occur against women.

Advocating for equality for men does not translate into exploitation or subjugation of women.** Nor** does it mean to deny females their rights.

Here is a sample of a discussion of the facts of domestic violence.
fathersforlife.org/Sodhi/debunkingDV.htm and here: menstuff.org/issues/byissue/domesticviolence.html and here: oregoncounseling.org/Handouts/DomesticViolenceMen.htm What ever the actual truth is, it simply can no longer be denied, the high volume of female battering of males. Nor the* corresponding lack of services* for Battered Men in comparison to women. Nor the prejudiced legal and reporting system. Simple really.

You, of course, can choose to believe what you …wish.
It is a fact that men have always had the power so what’s this about advocating for equality for men? What about equality for all? Why start such a provocative thread? I am not in the US but you appear to be saying that the courts in the most powerful nation in the world are biased and so rubbish. I would not think so.

All over the world, for the most, it is women who stay with their children. I have known of 2 women who have given up their children. I know of many men who have done so. It does not mean that all men are rotten. It just means that men should be brought up to respect women, to learn about responsibilities. Many men are still brought up to think that all they have to do is earn an income. Their wives have to be grateful and do everything else.

There are women who are bad, nasty, violent. On a balance, who is more likely to abandon their children?

We can go on and on like this or we can stop starting threads like this.

  1. The point is the rates are probably the same, merely differing in reporting frequency.
  2. Sane people don’t hit people for no reason, more common scenario is: woman yells at man, man either ignores her or starts yelling because he is fed up, woman slaps man to get attention. Kicking, slapping, pushing, shoving in addition to punching qualify as violence. “Hitting like a girl” is irrelevant to it being violence. I pointed out to my college female friends that slapping is violence and then they generally said something along the lines of “Wow, in that case women are the more violent sex”.
  3. Alcohol doesn’t make people commit random acts of violence, inebriated people are more likely to react when they feel threatened or provoked. For someone who has been drinking being yelled and being slapped in the face might be sufficient. Men tend to drink heavily to deal with stress or emotional problems, a wife continually tearing him down very well what might get him to be drinking in the first place, another is job stress.

Precisely. This thread was initiated to highlight social awareness. No one doubts that women have much to deal with. However men have a great deal to deal with too! Some issues, like the ones I have highlighted, such as Men having a certain ‘Culture of Bias’ in many areas inflicted upon them needs to be addressed. Such as the presented links here: youtube.com/watch?v=LlFAd4YdQks and here
youtube.com/watch?v=vp8tToFv-bA

Also the rabid bias on the part of the legal system in terms of child custody is yet just another glaring disparity.

Simple really.

And just to restate: To advocate for Men’s rights does not translate into the denial of Female Rights.

So many people like to behave like it is wayyyyy to remotely even possible to to even entertain the idea of Men having social issues that need redress. 🤷

I wouldn’t look at anything shown on Youtube to be evidence of anything. Repeating that the courts are biased in favour of women does not make it true.

There is never an excuse to drink to excess. Ever. I don’t care if your job is hard or your wife is a nag, getting drunk to “cope” with it puts yourself and your family at risk. And if that progresses to full blown alcoholism everyone exposed to that person suffers. Women are not responsible for men drinking, just as men aren’t to blame for women drinking. We are all adults and responsible for our own behavior and choices. Having lived with 2 alcoholics and one drug addict in my life I can assure you I would never do it again. It’s an emotionally devastating situation and physically dangerous.

The rates may be the same (which I still doubt), but is the effect? Are there as many men fearing that their partners may kill, kidnap, or seriously injure them? Or do they shrug off the hitting because she isn’t posing a real threat? It may make him angry, but it doesn’t do the same damage. Do men go to work and tell their bosses that they “ran into a door”, or do they lack bruises because it wasn’t as severe as what women get? When a woman hits him is he terrified of what’s going to happen next knowing that he can’t get away and that the beating will last seemingly forever? No, probably not.

And like the site says, it’s pretty much the same for why women don’t do anything. But that doesn’t address the issue of damage. Even if the number of female and male abusers were equal (and I maintain they aren’t) the damage done to women is far worse, and I have posted sources attesting to that. Women do tend to do the light, hit like a girl, stuff. With men its a whole different ballgame. That’s why resources for it aren’t equal, because the problem isn’t.

That’s not to say that men shouldn’t leave or that women shouldn’t be arrested. But I am saying that there is a disparity in consequences for male and female victims of abuse. Men tend to be angry and hurt, and maybe in a little physical pain. Women end up in the hospital.

I guess I don’t get what’s so bad about acknowledging that male on female abuse tends to do more harm. That doesn’t speak ill of men, doesn’t say that all men are abusers, and doesn’t mean that all men are scary. It’s just acknowledging the simple fact that men tend to be bigger, stronger, and more physically aggressive. That’s why they play in the NFL. Is that a sexist statement that means all men are football players? No.

I don’t hate or fear men. I’m marrying a wonderful and huge man. All but one of my friends are men. My brother is one of the best people I know. Men tend to possess traits that I like far better than females. They’re more honest, laid back, fun, and loyal. But none of those things change the fact that when they abuse its more severe than what women do, at least physically.

What is the problem here is the vicious National Organization for Women, and radical feminists like Gloria Steinem, who said: “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” You know who preached fear? How about Betty Friedan, author of the horrible diatribe, The Feminine Mystique, who called the family “a comfortable concentration camp.” You want more?

These agents for change didn’t want to foster a greater understanding between men and women. They didn’t want to solve anything. What they wanted was class warfare. That’s why we have “women’s studies” at Universities because some idiotic radical wanted to scare women even more. And I’ve seen posts here that reflect that. And it all ended up with one guiding principle - women were ordered to become men, get out of the house, get a career, kids? dump those in day care, and dump the guy the moment he gets on your nerves OR PRACTICE JUST SEX like using a toilet (just watch any episode of Sex and the City).

So men? Sperm donors at best - useless for anything else.

Peace,
Ed

It really is not about numbers now* is* it. Whether one sex abuses the other slightly more or slightly less is just not the point. The *point *is that women do indeed abuse men. It is already acknowledged that men can be abusive. One actual point of much discussion here, is that Female Abusers are not recognized to the degree that they should be recognized.

** Show me** a self proclaimed, widely accepted Feminist Organization that is not radical.

I wonder if Feminists for Life might qualify as not radical in your estimation.
Here is their website:
feministsforlife.org/index.htm
It would help to have your definition of “radical feminism”.
What are its attributes? How might one recognize and identify it as such?
May God bless all men and women and children. Amen.
