Daily Prayer

I’m trying to set a routine. I would like to know the daily prayers that are traditionally said at certain times of the day in Catholicism. I’m not really in a time in my life where I can say the Divine Office, so are there any morning and evening prayers that are traditionally said at set times (i.e. The Angelus) that I can use throughout the day?

Morning: A general run-thru with the Creed ,Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, Act of Faith, Act of Hope, Act of Charity, Act of Contrition, and then the Fatima Morning Offering:
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys and sufferings, all that this day may bring, be they good or bad: for the love of God, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for all the sins committed against the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Afternoon: Angelus (or Rosary, if there’s time at lunch), Prayer to the Holy Spirit (Breathe into me, Holy Spirit…) followed by an “Eternal Rest, grant unto them, O Lord…”

Night (I compiled a little prayer-book of my favorite prayers, but if I’m too tired I just say these:
  1. Confiteor
  2. Prayer of St. Augustine
Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give Your angels and saints charge over those who sleep. Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest Your weary ones. Bless Your dying ones. Soothe Your suffering ones.
Pity Your afflicted ones. Shield Your joyous ones, and all for Your love’s sake. Amen.

You don’t have to be overly scrupulous about the time for praying Morning and Evening Prayer. Use one of the simplified forms for laity and pray it whenever time in the morning or evening you can.

Only priests and religious are to keep strictly to the prescribed times. Since praying Morning and Evening Prayer by the laity (unless at a service with others present) is a private devotion and can therefore be prayed at any time that is convenient for you.

Don’t let anyone put the onus on you of doing what is only required of priests and religious. The goal for lay people is to pray, not to keep to a schedule not intended for them. 🙂
 
My dh & I use the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin. We say the Morning and Night prayers together. We also say Grace before eating.

The Angelus is traditionally said at 6am, Noon, and 6pm.
6am and 6pm are also the traditional times for Lauds and Vespers. Office of the Readings may be at anytime. I know you said you did not know when you might find time for the LOTH but I thought you might like the traditional hours anyway.
Jesus died at 3:00 which is the time to recite the Divine Mercy. It is also a time set aside for many as a prayer hour.
The rosary can be recited at any time. I was reared in a home where daily rosary was recited after supper. These are traditional times but it more important to pray as the Lord leads. For example I might pray Lauds at 5am or 7am. It’s 6:00 somewhere. I try not to stray past too many time zones. I also pray the Divine Mercy while waiting for the bus, not necessarily 3pm.
 
Where could I find a book with the traditional Office? Preferrably so traditional that it has the Latin on one page and the English on the other!! I would like to say the morning office, and maybe one daily office and Vespers and Compline. I only brought “Shorter Christian Prayer” with me to my dorm and I’m too far away to get my “Christian Prayer” copy. Besides, I wanted a new, more traditional, Divine Office compilation. Any suggestions?

You should ask that question in the Traditional Catholicism forum where you’ll get lots of answers.

I will pass on the advice given to me by my spiritual director at my recent retreat…

Start slow. Start out with one or two devotions, and work up from there.

In my case, I use the Little Office of the BVM as the double-hinge on which my prayer life turns. I work swing shift at the Post Office, 3 PM - 11:30 PM.

As such, Morning Prayer may be as late as 1:30 PM, before I head off to work. Evening Prayer will be after midnight, when I get home.

For Compline, and Sunday Evening Vespers, I use the great books published by SACROS at sacros.com

I have other prayers and devotions, but for me, this is a good start, which I pass on to you as a suggestion.👍
 
I’ve been trying to pray the LOTH for about two years now and it just doesn’t fit my spiritual needs…maybe I’m not understanding the full value of the Psalms??

maybe you might like the magnificat then.
it has a morning reading & prayers, and some for evening and night
it also has the daily mass readings with an accompanying meditation.
all of the readings are tied together or coordinated if you will so as to keep you focused on the day’s theme.
(it does have psalms in it tho…)

The Little Office, in its latest 1988 revision, is taken from the Divine Office, and offer a set of prayers. The two important sets of this book are the morning prayers and evening prayers, one for each day of the week. The format is simple, no flipping pages back and forth required. A gentle way to pray to Mary, which means (of course) a gentle way to pray to her son, Jesus. :gopray2:

Once you have this devotion solidly in your life, you can easily expand to other sets of prayers. But this is an excellent foundation (opinion not endorsed by my cats).🙂
 
I bought a very simple Benedictine Office called “Work of God” at a monastery I visited recently. It is a watered down version of “Shorter Christian Prayer”…maybe I’ll have my mom send that to me here @ college. Maybe that simplicity is what I need right now??

It will help with the earlier suggestion to take it slow.
Think of this advice much as you would the advice of beginning a physcal exercise program. By beginning slowly, you build up strength and endurance while minimizing injury. There is a better chance of sticking to the program if you don’t overdue at the beginning.
The same is true with prayer life. You are trying to develop a routine that will become a natural part of your day. By starting slowly, you will discover what works best in your own particular situation without the danger of burning out and quitting.
The morning and evening prayer in the Magnificat is like a mini version of the LOTH.
 
I don’t really like the Magnificat…just a personal preference that I’ve discovered. I think I’ll go with Shorter Christian Prayer and the Angelus.

That is actually my preference. The Word Today has an edition that includes the daily Mass readings, much as the Magnificat has. It is also cheaper.

you could always start with a morning offering prayer,… and an our father hail mary glory be (at morning and night…and build up from there…during the day you could say lots of short prayers like …jesus, mary, and joseph, i love you, save souls…there are lots of website full of these short prayers so you could get a few that you liked…also you could make up your own to match the intentions that you like to pray for…jesus have mercy on mankind, jesus shower blessings and graces on the church, jesus bless the homeless and those living in poverty, jesus assist and save the dying, jesus release the holy souls in purgatory, mother mary pray for us etc…these prayers are limitless because you can make them up to suit what you wish to pray for and you can say them countless times in your head…you can fill your day with them…so that in between your morning and night prayers you wil feel as though you have filled your day with prayer
