But they might be onto something without knowing it. The “crisis” could contribute to the definition of Benedict XVI’s papacy much as Apollo 13 contributed to the definition of NASA.

Once the dust settles, I expect history to be quite kind to Benedict. It is the present that appears to be the challenge.

I understand that the shuttle program is being phased out.

It’s not the fault of the British press that your cup is runnething over. Blame the Vatican.

Benedict is 83 this year and isn’t getting any younger. Many of the abuse cases are waiting in the wings to come forward, especially in Germany, also Italy. How he manages these *will *define his papacy.

Benedict, as Cardinal Ratzinger, stalled during the Milwaukee case, and either didn’t know about or punted his responsibility in the Munich case. In the Maciel/Legion case, he waited from 1997, when the 8 seminarians present their case to the CDF, until 2006, to retire Maciel in disgrace. I suspect that he couldn’t move before this because of Maciel’s powerful friends in the Vatican, including Cardinals Dziwicz, Sodano, currently Dean of the College of Cardinals, and Somalo, then head of the Cong. for Consecrated Life, which oversaw the Legion of Christ.
