Yoga is not gymnastics. It’s not for “health, beauty and vitality”. This form of “yoga” is taught by pseudo-yogis and westernized gurus who know nothing of the spiritual life and practice of true yoga. If you like to stretch in certain ways simply for the sake of health, good on you, that’s not yoga!
Yoga means to “link-up”…it’s ultimate aim is union with the divine. Now, there are two main schools of thought on this: union with a divine entity, in the sense of a spiritual relationship with said entity (not The Holy Trinity by the way) or union with the divine in the sense of “dissolving” into the divine, meaning becoming divine. Both of these are Gnostic paths and therefore heretical paths. While “becoming divine” is found within Orthodox theology, it isn’t the same thing at all. For the yogi, the whole idea is to transcend material reality and end up wholly in a spiritual state. Again, this is Gnostic and heretical and in fact, demonic. For the Christian, the aim is redemption of the entire human person, mind, body and soul.
Do you know that Far Eastern philosophy teaches that this material realm is an illusory realm of ignorance? That our bodies are prisons that we must transcend? That material reality is essentially “evil” and only the spirit realm is good? The whole idea is to transcend the body. Tell me, what do we call the separation of body and soul? Yup, you got it, it’s called death. And did God intend for us to die when He created us? You see where I am going with this? I am preaching the essence and nature of true yoga here, not mere gymnastic feats or siddhis (mystical powers). That’s pseudo-yoga.
I can claim these things because I was a Vaishnava Hindu before converting to Orthodox Christianity. I converted because I came to a place where I realized that I was destined for Hell for what I was practicing. Please be aware of what you are diving into. That’s all I have to say. Take care.
