My husband and I have been trying to set aside time to spend together our alone time, after the kids go to bed. This is our “date night” since getting a babysitter for our 7, 3 and 6month old is close to impossible, that aside were trying to make date night at home work, we’ve been watching movies but frankly I’m quite bored with it and am in need of some creative or not so creative ideas. Please hellp!!!

I’m not so creative, but I’d vote for playing cards.

Board games for two can be fun. My husband and I used to play backgammon and mancala, and board games like Mastermind, Battleship, Scrabble, Connect Four, etc. You could invite another couple over once in a while for variety.

Actually, once the kids are in bed, you could have a sitter over just so you can get out of the house…maybe go for dessert and coffee. It can’t get easier than that for a sitter!

Do you like to cook? Maybe you could make a dish or a dessert together, or bake cutouts ahead of time and frost them together.

Even if you do end up watching a movie again, make it more fun with fun snacks or drinks.

And then there’s always the Wii, or some on-line game you could play together. Personally, I like Text Twist (it’s one of the word games on Yahoo).

That’s great !!
  • What we already do, although we have no kids, is : pick a great couple book, and read it together (one or a few chapters at a time), cuddling on the couch, and discussing it. This can be made even better by a glass of wine, some music in the background, … As an example: we’ve read such books Gary Chapman’s *5 Love Languages *and Covenant Marriage, as well as the French equivalent to Christopher West’s book on the TOB during such evenings.
  • I second the card / boardgame suggestion
  • Do you dance ? Just put waltz / rock’n roll / salsa music and dance together in the living room
edit: I forgot another suggestion: it depends on the area you live in, but we do enjoy just going out of our flat for a short walk in the streets around, holding hands and getting a bit of fresh air (even the last sunrays, in the summer !)

Chess. It’s wonderful at providing half a yard’s distance between an unmarried couple, but who says married folks can’t play. 😛

We don’t watch much TV or movies because, if Madonna doesn’t let her kids get perverted by watching it, then we shouldn’t either.:eek::eek: If you haven’t seen the series 24, go back and watch it from the very beginning.

Bake a cake from scratch (no box mixes!) and enjoy with a glass of good wine and some old photo albums you haven’t seen for a time with some soft music.

Some of my favorites:

Scrabble or another game
Working on a puzzle – since it uses a different part of your brain, you can have a great conversation while doing puzzles. I know we always do!
Cooking together
Walks are great (though you would need to find something to do about the kids)
Stargazing. If you’re in an area that’s not too brightly lit, you can go out in the yard and see if you can recognize any constellations. We used to do this a ton before we were married.
Backrubs. Actually take the time to do the whole shebang: peaceful music, lit candles, massage oil … this is the most relaxing thing in the world. Plus, it’s an act of service to do for each other, AND it’s another thing that makes a good setting for a good conversation.
A craft project – say, drawing or painting. You could get a “how to draw” book and try out the activities. (This depends on what you’re into.)
Reading aloud to each other. We never could do “couples books” together, but reading aloud a funny or exciting novel together is great fun, plus gives you more to talk about.
I read an article the other day that suggested cheese tasting or beer tasting. It has the downside of costing something, but not a ton really.
If you have a big bathtub, a long bubble bath.
In the summer evenings, just sitting on the porch with a glass of lemonade feels like a date.

How’s that for starters? If your husband is on board with wanting to try something new, make a list of things you like and have him pick what he’d like to try first. Next time it could be your turn. Remember to schedule that date in and not let anything take its place! Just because you don’t have a babysitter lined up doesn’t mean it’s not set in stone.

Thank you very much for your ideas we will definitely be trying these!!Last night we drank some red wine and red a chapter of the catechism out loud, it was very informative, and it opened up long intellectual conversation, thanks so much for your help.

Have a carpet picnic. Move all the funiture to the edge of the room and lay out a nice table cloth or blanket just like you would if you were having a picnic in the park. Have all the food and drinks laid out just the same. If you pretend real hard it is just like a real one only with out the ants.

I was going to say nearly the same thing! 😃

My hubs and I really enjoy talking - unintereupted talking is a luxury in our home- and we love movies…someone suggested the 24 series and I’m SO going to do that! (thanks!) Someone else mentioned playing cards and we’ve done that, too - that’s very fun for us b/c again, it promotes humorous conversation…not to mention, there are a bunch of ways to make it “marriage appropriate” if you know what I mean…
We also have a dart board so we get a few good games of that in, too, sometimes.

Most of the time, we like to put a huge comforter on the floor, set up every pillow we own (which is A LOT of pillows), and have another comforter to lay under. If I think of it, I’ll light some candles, but then we both get so lazy that neither of us wants to get up to blow them out, so we just lay in the dark. 😛 Conversation starters usually happen the minute he starts predicting what’s gonna happen next in the movie or my all time favorite, “oh, I know how it’s gonna end”… which is his way of ribbing me b/c he knows I HATE that…he’ll even say that when he has absolutely no idea how it’s gonna end just to get me going. 😃

Honestly, anything can be fun - it’s all what you do with it…

Lots of great ideas! Think of the things folks used to do before TV (or even electricity!) When the weather is better, my dh and I will sit out on the back porch with a glass of wine and just talk and enjoy the weather. I don’t know that a couples book would work for us, but I love the idea of reading a novel or play aloud. Puzzles are great, cards, games like backgammon. Most board games work better with more than two we’ve found.

One thing we did a lot when we were first married (before kids) was to watch movies but with ‘matching’ food. So chili for a western, etc. I especially liked watching foreign movies and matching to food either through an attempt in the kitchen or carry-out. 😃

Glad your night of the Catechism went well. That is actually a wonderful idea!
