… how we treat animals - alive or dead - has nothing to do with how we value life…
Then do you believe there is any moral dimension to laws against torturing certain animals, like dogs, cats, and horses? Should we do away with those laws? And if we do keep them, why should we keep them?

It seems perhaps my sarcasm to thistle’s response failed.

I live in a different time zone (Philippines) so I’m not sitting at my computer 24 hours a day waiting to see if you make a silly comment.

The answer is yes because animals are not equal to us we can eat them. God gave us dominion over the animals to do as we want with them provided we do not cause them unnecessary suffering. Don’t you know the Church teachings??

The position of God and his Church trumps your opinion!

CCC 2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image. Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.

What would you do with a human?

That is what we should do with our pets.

Some don’t believe animals should be that valued; but, then again, there are those who don’t value people either - in both cases, neither should be followed.

Da Vinci said civility is defined by our behavior toward the helpless - embryos and animals.

🙂
You are doing teh same thing for the animal as you would for a human.

If you found a dead person on the side of teh road you wouldn’t scoop them up and take them home, wrap them in a tea towel and burry them under your rose bush, woudl you?

You know, I can’t believe how many of your people are that freaked out by diseases.
Grab a large stick, and nudge it off the road at least, so it’s not splattered by more cars.
It’s not like roadkill clean up gets around and takes care of these things every second, that poor thing’ll be out there for days. I wouldn’t recommend tossing it in the trash but for goodness sake, show the creature some dignity and get it off the road.
And spare driving the misfortune of hitting roadkill, and getting entrails in their tires. D:

Leaving dead animals on the road for the authorities to clean up has nothing to do with how we value life. Animals are NOT equal to humans. We are allowed to use them for food, clothing, domestic help, and for medical experiments to benefit humans.
Food, clothing, domestic help, medical experiments, and benefits to humans?

Not to jump to conclusions, but you’re most likely one of those types who thinks animals are objects God gave up to use, and treat inhumanely, aren’t you?

OH WAIT, it’s noooot inhumane, because there’s no such thiiing as treating animals humanely to begin with. It’s okay! It doesn’t have a soooouuuul, so it’s just fine to torture and abuse it!
Infact, it’s not even torture and abuse if it’s an animal!

So, SORRY, if I’m jumping to conclusions here, but… If you ARE that variety of “christian”… your kind disgust me. 😦

@ OP - If there’s a way to identify it, if you recognize it as a neighborhood pet, I think it is your obligation to contact the owner, tell them what happened.

Otherwise, there’s nothing you can do. I just wouldn’t recommend tossing it in the garbage. That’s kinda eww.

The reason you would have an obligation to notify the owner is not out of respect for the life of the pet. It is out of respect for the life of the owner, who probably loved that pet very much. That is why you don’t bother showing a lot of respect to a dead racoon or groundhog, but you do show respect for a dead border collie, German shepherd, or Abyssinian.

Yes, I can see that you live in a different time zone. Quite different.

Also yes, God trumps anything I say. Quite right.

So to you, experimentation on them - is acceptable - if - reasonable () - and if - contributes - to humans. Quite . . . sad.

🙂

Reasonable? Many companies are doing just fine without animal testing.

Veal crates are narrow, solid-sided wooden boxes for rearing surplus dairy calves for slaughter. The crates are so narrow that the incarcerated calf cannot turn around for much of its life. Deprived of exercise, some can barely walk to slaughter at 4-6 months old. Crated calves are fed an all-liquid, iron-deficient diet to produce the pale, anemic ‘white’ veal prized by gourmets.

ARI’s response to this issue: Once again, Prop 2 will ban this practice in California, and the vote here, as well as an earlier vote banning veal crates in Arizona, has sent a message to producers. As a result, some major American veal producers are phasing out veal crates.
Is this humane? 🤷 Remember, I am not an animal rights activist I am a member of People Eating Tasty Animals. However, Im not going to eat something that was put through this much trauma, just so I could have a tasty meal. Rodeos and such. same thing. Do you have any Idea what they do to get a bull to buck?! Think if it was you they were doing this to. Look up some sites and see where they tie the rope!

If I saw tags on the animal, I might consider stopping. If I am not the one who hit the animal and killed it, I would not have the same degree of responsibility, but if I saw a collar and tags, it would bother me the rest of the day if I didn’t stop. I have never hit a dog or cat but if I happened to, I would consider it my responsibility to get it cared for or take the body to a vet to see if there is a chip to locate the owner. I would never clean up the body of the animal. Yuk.

The risk of disease is real - and dead animals are gross. Pests move in almost immediately. I do not want to have contact with dead animals. That is not my job.

I live near a sort of wildlife refuge and there are buzzards nearby - they take care of any reasonable-sized roadkill in less than 15 minutes, a lot quicker than the city can! I guess that may be a problem for animal owners, since they may never know what happened to their pet, but it’s very interesting to watch how quickly these birds can dispatch a dead animal like a possum or squirrel.

This discussion isn’t about eating animals or animal testing. It was a question about seeing a dead pet and taking responsibility for finding the owner or throwing the body away.

To me its acceptable because the Church to which God gave authority says its acceptable.
Are you are saying you reject the Church teaching on allowing medical experiments on animals if they benefit humans??

That is where you are mistaken animals do have have souls, just as plants do. The difference is the human soul is a spirtual soul not just one that gives life.
Excuse me. I did not think I had to be specific on that. Animals to not have immortal souls. We will not see our pets in heaven. When they die, they are dead. Completely dead.🤷

We should not be concerned with various views of others regarding Catholic teaching.

We do not *share * the planet with the animals. We have dominion over them. We have a responsibility that comes with that, but not at the expense of treating them as equals. If anumals can serve to provide valuable research data that will improve the quality of human life, then that’s what they’re here for.

The answer here IMO is situational. If you know who the animal belonged to you let they know. If you hit the animal and it is still alive you care for it and notify the owner if possible. If you can safely put a dead animal off to the side of the road do so if you have the ability or call the proper authorities to remove the animal.

The reason I said to move the dead animal many drivers swerve around things and can cause injury to other drivers or pedestrians. Safety for you and others as always come first.

To me its acceptable because the Church to which God gave authority says its acceptable.
Are you are saying you reject the Church teaching on allowing medical experiments on animals if they benefit humans??
Just because the Church says medical experimentation is permissible, that doesn’t mean one must be in favor of it. It just means that one cannot claim that the Church forbids it. Saying “that is so sad” is more of an expression of personal preference than an claim of dogmatic necessity.

If you don’t understand that, consider the eating of raw oysters. That is also permitted by the Church. But many good Catholics may still find the thought of eating raw oysters to be disgusting. (Not me. I love raw oysters.)

So when Curious Seed expresses a call to have more respect for the life of animals, that by itself is not a rejection of Church teaching.

You leave it on the road.
Ah, it was in front of my house in the country and we don’t have people who picks up the dead animals. So, if we don’t want the smell and this animal was froozen anyways. why not use the shovel to push it into a tipped over trash can.

The OP is not talking about our own pets. He is talking about any cats or dogs killed on the roads. They should be left there and cleaned up by the authorities. That has nothing to do with how we value an animal.
Our authorities in my hood does not do that. It is left up to the nearest home owner to deal with it — budget cuts and all.
