I’ve been having problems lately trying to get along with my father. I am worried about him. He overworks himself (far more than a man should at his age), has severe anger issues, and hates God. He doesn’t go to Mass at all or Confession. I know this is due in part because he works so much (and if he didn’t work, would not keep the house), but even if he were semi-retired, I already know he would not make an effort to go to Mass.

He grew up in a somewhat abusive background; his parents would always send him and his sister to church together. The parents never went to church services with their kids (they are Protestant, I think of Baptist background). My father became Catholic when he married my mom and went to Mass with us when we were younger. Basically, he and his sister did not have a happy childhood. They have severe health and mental issues it seems from this unhappy childhood.

I am the only one in my family who tries to regularly attend Mass (I don’t really have a car). My mom comes with me, but she says “God doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t know why I bother coming with you.” Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who has this problem, but I know I don’t. I am trying so hard to get out of the house but I can’t do that because I can’t find a full-time, career-related job yet. I’m stuck at home. I help out the best I can when I don’t work part-time.

I am constantly surrounded by those who are unhappy and extremely angry. I am very different from my father and when he has his anger outbursts, I stay away from him. He really can say hurtful things to people when he is this way. Obviously, I will confront him and counter the things he says to me, sometimes on a level that he doesn’t expect. He claims there is nothing wrong with him (that he doesn’t have anger management issues) and that he is the “sanest person he knows.” This is complete and utter denial to me. He doesn’t go to the doctor ever and doesn’t take medication for his anger outbursts. How can anyone live in complete denial like this?

I guess I just don’t know what to do. I want him to stop hating God and blaming people for his anger issues. It is walking on thin ice whenever I’m around him, so much so that I avoid him whenever I can. I have been praying for him to keep his job (and hope he doesn’t drop dead from overworking himself to death, which I greatly fear) and health, and hope he indeed realizes that there is something wrong with the way he treats people. I don’t know if there is anything else I can do for him.

Tous, your father sounds like he has problems you cannot fix. You can hope in God. You can embrace your faith and know that this is where the riches are to sustain you in this situation, and where you can plead for God’s help withe the help of the Saints and the Holy Family.

Perhaps at some good moment when your Dad is not angry, you could tell him how nice it would be for you if he would go to Mass with you sometime. Don’t put any pressure or guilt. He went alone to church as a child; he may decide he wants better for you than he had. Meanwhile enjoy the positive or neutral moments with your Dad and ask for help and God’s comfort in those not so nice times. His heart has been damaged and Jesus does heal hearts (although, rarely without a person * wanting* their heart healed). So turn to Him, your comfort and your hope, your rock and our fortress.

I am so sorry and my heart goes out to you. I empathise with you as my mother who lives with my husband and I has stopped attending Mass. Her mental reasoning is affected by a stroke she had in 2003.

It upsets me and worries me that she does not attend as she is in poor health but I try to regularly politely invite her.I have made many mistakes and gotten upset with her about it…that does no good at all and will have the opposite effect.

I have tried talking calmly and nicely and reasoning with her and then she may come one week then not at all again.

I have no advice only empathy and sympathy for I understand your worries. I pray and leave it to God to guide my mother.

I hope someone here will have some good advice for you about your situation.

God bless you

There really isn’t much you can do, Tuos, I am sorry. Praying for him, offering sacrifices for him, and not allowing him to bully or intimidate you, those are the main things that are within your power. It sounds like your dad needs some counseling to deal with his terrible childhood - and perhaps his sister was abused? (Just having to go to church without their mom & dad does not seem that abusive…while not optimum, that’s not enough for someone to blame and hate God as much as you say your dad does.)

Sometimes, people use God as a scapegoat. It’s not as if they really even know God, but they can externalize all the pain and anger they feel for everything that’s happened in their lives and give that poison God’s name. They can stay a victim that way, and feel sorry for themselves, and blame some outside force (God) for what happened to them. It seems to happen with people who have some bad event or trauma happen at a young age, that they can’t get over, so they stay stuck there and never realize that bad things happen in life no matter what. God didn’t cause the bad thing to happen in their lives but they can never see that. It’s a very big blind spot and unless the Holy Spirit can find a crack in their defenses, they aren’t going to change.

I’m sorry to have to say that, but from where I stand, I don’t see the defenses of someone like your dad to weaken. Sometimes people will have a health crisis that brings them to God in a new way, but that can even go wrong and they can become even more bitter and angry at God. Pray for your father and ask everyone you know to pray for him too. It is a terrible life to carry that anger for God.

I come from a similar family situation that you do. I had a conversion when I was 16…I’m now 30 and have learned a few things on dealing with family.

Two questions so I can offer advice-
  1. How old are you?
  2. Do you live with your parents?
Based on your answer to these questions your strategy will be completely different as to how you deal with the situation.

I can sympathize but have no practical advise to give. My own father has fallen away from the church some 40 years back and probably does not understand why I have chosen it so relatively late in my life.

I’ve tried talking to him about it but this is one of the few subjects that can actually make him very angry. That and politics.

I’ve been able to cope with the situation by avoiding bringing up faith or political discussion with him directly. We still occasionally get into a row about it when someone else brings it up in his presence and he cannot help himself…

Thanks for all your replies.

I know, there isn’t really anything I can do to make him realize that God does not hate him. I can’t force him to go see a doctor, or to change himself. He is not like this 24/7 honestly, but when he is, I usually see him as being…“psychotic?” He’s not an alcoholic (thank God) but his sister has had alcoholism problems in her past.

BUT…she is a true believer in God. She was divorced twice in her far past but has been remarried now with someone for close to 20 years. She attends daily Mass whenever she can. In other words, she has chosen to turn her life around. I wish I could see my father do the same. My mother is starting to fall in that trap now herself, she is constantly complaining about everything. There is so much tension between everyone.

To answer another poster’s question, my age is irrelevant. I have graduated college and have a Bachelor’s but am having no luck finding a full-time, career-related job. I have no money. I’m paying close to $900 a month for college loan payments and am not saving any money currently. I have no where else to go (my “outside” family has their own problems which I don’t want to be involved with) and I may lose my job by next month anyway. I just can’t get up and leave; I wish I could. I’m hoping soon, that I can.

I bought a green scapular online. I’ve read amazing stories about the green scapular and family conversions. I’m going to place it under my parents’ bed when I get it without them knowing. I am trying to get more into different Catholic devotions. I am a novenas and chaplets individual, never been much of a scapular one. But I am going to try and see what blossoms.👍

The scapular is just a focus for prayer, it’s not magic. You pray every day, “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for X and for all of us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.” I will add your father to my prayers. God bless you. Hang in there.

Thank you. Yes, I know scapulars are not “hocus pocus” or magic. I know this is one thing that we have to becareful with in wording so maybe I messed up the wording in my post. I most definitely know that they are used as a focus of prayer. It is just a new devotion that I am not entirely familiar with.

I have one planted under my husband’s side of the mattress, so I also have the prayer put into my phone and it alerts me every day at 9:45 a.m. I pray, and I pray. I hope your dad is one of those miracles!

I can offer no advice, but I will pray for you and your family
