Oh my gosh, you sound like you are headed for sainthood. I am praying for you. You are on the right road, keep your eyes on Jesus. You are doing a wonderful job as a mother, your children will never forget this.

Have you read “Arise from Darkness” by Father Groeschel? It is a wonderful book. It is for those who are depressed, and those who are going thru hard times. I highly recommend this, you will gain much peace. I am reading it again for the 4th time.

May the Peace and Love of Christ be with you all.

Claire

Thankyou 2sweetgirls and everyone else for writing on this post.I too am living with someone who has depression and anxiety and feel often really alone. We met when i was 19 i was living alone and with my son and now we have a daughter together to.We have been together for five years and its so differcult. His anxiety has lead him to believe that he has a serioys health problem. We have been through them all brain tumour, something wrong with his heart etc.He also finds it differcult to go out on his own so we spend all day every day together and i have no friends. We both have supportive families but dont want to burden them with it and i dont want them to worry.
Last summer i was reading a story from the childrens bible my son had when he was baptised and that started my journey studying the catholic faith and finding you guys. His anxiety and depression means we cant go to church and we are not married.
This post has shown im not alone so thankyou all for having the courage to post your stories.I am so sorry for you all with anxiety and depression .Thankyou.

Blossomingflowe, I’m sad to read your painful difficulties.
I know it can be so difficult to be together all day every day with a depressed person suffering from an anxiety syndrome. You can feel like a prisoner sometimes. I pray that you will find the strength to give yourself some consideration and nurture too, and some interest for yourself so as not to be swallowed up by your husband’s illness.

Do you think you would be sad if your daughter or sister was very sad and alone, but they didn’t tell you how much they need you? I just wonder if you can feel you can call on them for some support…if you think about that.
Have you found advice and support of a priest at any time?

I will certainly be praying for you, and for your husband and your children.

Warmly, Trishie

Thanks Trishie for your response the truth is i feel a bit of a fraud being on here in the first place. I am not catholic(although i would love to be) and im not even married. As far as i know i havent even stepped into a catholic church.I just order lots of catholic books and study them and of course pray.
Like i said our families are close but i dont want to worry them with this problem and i think not talking to them about it keeps me strong in a way.I know that probably doesnt make any sense. I am very lucky God has blessed me with 2 of the most beautiful children.

Blossoming,

If you can, Find a Catholic Church that is open, go sit in a pew. Jesus is present in the Tabernacle. Pour out your heart to HIM and just sit quietly with Jesus. I am depressed, and this helps alot.

I think you are being called to the Catholic Faith. Talk to a priest.

My prayers are with you.

To 33z3r. I am the depressed spouse and cannot imagine how difficult it must be for people like you and my wife to deal with this. .
I could never afford therapy so I kept trying different anti depressants and FINALLY (after 15 years) found two, that when taken together, changed my life.
Pray to Dymphna, the patron saint of mental illness and emotional disorders, and St Jude. Please don’t give up. You see, I feel I have a kinship with both those suffering from mental illness as well as their spouses.
Please consider offering up your terrible pain and suffering as repentance for your sins and the greater honor and glory of God. (Doing this made me feel like I was at least benefiting from my wretched pain and suffering.)

Bob
Again, please don’t give up - I will pray for you.

Oh yes, he most certainly has acknowledged that there IS something wrong, and last week I went with him to the dr. to talk about the depression and anxiety, and to discuss medication possibilities. He started an anti-depressant that day. So at least denial (on his part) doesn’t seem to be an issue.
Be prepared in case this med doesn’t work. He’ll have to start another one, and maybe even more. Be ready with words of encouragement and support since it’s terribly heart-breaking to expect something to work and it doesn’t.

Be ready to see that recovery has its ups and downs.

I was depressed as well (well, an overall mental breakdown, kinda). I found the meds and cognitive behavioral therapy to be a lifesaver. I literally had to relearn how to think since depression had changed my thought patterns without me knowing it.

I was reading a much older Catholic book on mental health - maybe from the 30’s or 40’s not too long ago. One of the remedies suggested was in fact CBT without the name! So CBT was first used by Catholic therapists.

Good luck!

I too live with a husband with depression and anxiety issues. I have been married to him for 10 years now. Sometimes I wonder if he suffers from a personality disorder, but he has been seeing a psychiartist for about 8 years now and they assure me, he is not suffering from one of these disorder, but I am the one who lives with him.

Anyway, how do you stay afloat? It is not easy. Through the grace of God and help the Mary our Mother and the saints in Heaven is how I have done so. I use to be able to go to daily Mass and that was a great source of comfort to receive Jesus daily, but I homeschool now and the program I use keeps my dd and I so busy, we don’t have time to go to Mass. If we did, we would be homeschooling until late at night and she would hate homeschooling. She is already resenting it a little for we go late until about 5 pm sometimes. I am looking into other programs that are not so hard for her. Anyway, as a result of my husbands problems, he can’t work, so he is home with me all the time. He has many addictions and this bothers me. I am here for him, but I get upset at all his addictions, especially to food and TV. He does try to go to daily noon Mass if he can wake up. He sleeps a lot because he is up late at night. His psychiatrist told me he is suffering from major depression and that I need to be understanding and patient. I am for the most part, but you see we are both physically disabled too and I need help around the house and I do everything and it bothers me too. If I ask him to do something, he “forgets” or doesn’t do it. He says I don’t respect him and I say he doesn’t love me. Anyway, we are working on that part of our marriage and the audio book we are listening to is helping, but my dh is having trouble applying some of the concepts. He is very overweight, morbidly obese actually and I have a bad back and by his overeating and continuing to overeat, it just keeps the pounds coming. In the meantime it hurts my back when we make love. So it is very difficult living with someone who is so depressed that all he does is think of himself and all his problems. My dh centers himself on all that is wrong with him and I am sure that not being able to work bothers him. But he has not been able to work now for 7 years of our married life. He can do some things around the house and he doesn’t. Sometimes I call it laziness, but I know he is suffering physically and mentally. I still work in physical pain and in mental pain.

Just be careful. For a period of time there, I allowed myself to be dragged down with him. I got so depressed myself. I didn’t care about anything anymore. My husband had a bad anger problem too. He still does, but under medication now it is more control. It does take time for the right combination of drugs to work and dose. So be patient there. But don’t allow yourself to be dragged down too. I got so depressed that I didn’t care to discipline my dd or cook to feed her or anything. It just happened that I was going to a pain management doctor for an appointment and she saw how depressed I looked. She started to ask me question on my life at home. I talked to anyone who would listen. She told me to get some help and so see a psychiatrist for some antidepressant and that I may only need it for a little while, but to do it for my daughter. I did and I am glad I did. I only needed it for three months and felt better and could think clearly. After that I did a novena to the Holy Spirit and that helped the most.

I will keep you in my prayers and for your husband as well. May Jesus give you strength and if you can’t receive Holy Communion daily, take as many Spiritual Communions as possible. That is what I do now.
