MoveOn Spends $280,000 Schiavo Ad Regarding O’Connor Replacement** …
MoveOn PAC. An online liberal advocacy group, unveiled a new TV ad today aimed at discouraging President Bush from picking an extremist judge to replace outgoing Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, saying that he should honor O’Connor and appoint a moderate justice.
The message: “Don’t nominate and extremist who will undermine the rights of individuals and families as the President did in the Terri Schiavo case several months ago. Protect our rights”.
The organization is referring to the emergency legislation passed by Congress in late March and signed into law by President Bush that was designed to save the live of Terri Schiavo, a disabled adult who the Florida courts had ordered to die by the removal of her nutrition and hydration, advancing the husband’s position that she would not want to be kept alive by assisted feeding or artificial means. She had left no living will and had become incapacitated at age 26 in mysterious circumstances at her home with her husband, Michael Schiavo, as the only witness.
Her parents, Mary and Robert Schindler Sr., argued that it would not be their daughter’s wish to die and that it would be against her religious beliefs. They waged a long, contentious court battle trying to keep her alive.
Terri died March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed by court order and her estranged husband’s request.
The issue became a hotly debated political issue with critics saying that government had no business to interfere in what they deemed was a family matter. Proponents contend it was a constitutional issue and some political leaders maintain that the judiciary, and in particular the federal judiciary, had failed to give the Schiavo case the de novo or new review which had been the intent of Congress and the President.
The almost $280,000 ad by the political action committee will air on CNN in MaIne, Nebraska, South Carolina and VIrginia on CNN and FOX in New York and Washington, DC as part of MoveOn PAC’s grassroots mobilization to empower Americans and persuade the Senate to protect basic rights by rejecting an extremist nominee.
“Our message to the President as he considers nominees to the Supreme Court is ‘Protect Our Rights.’ Our message to the Senate when it considers the President’s nominee is ‘Protect Our Rights’,” said Ben Brandzel, advocacy director for MoveOn PAC.
“The President should honor O’Connor and appoint a moderate Supreme Court justice. We’re very concerned because we all saw the President undermine individual rights and invade a family’s privacy in the Terri Schiavo case a few months ago. If President Bush nominates an extremist, it will be up to Senators to say no, and the American people will make sure that they do just that,” he added.

to that, and I am sick of it too, I just keep telling the truth and praying anyway, I sure don’t have many friends but hey, ask me if I care, I wasn’t looking for friends anyway, I was just looking to tell the truth, it amazed me that I sent out sometimes as many as 50 emails to people about Terri’s plight and 2 people responded to me. …Aliens for sure, (and we are here on this journey) but I am going to keep right on speaking out and speaking up for LIFE.
