We are deeply saddened to report that a priest of the Fraternity of St. Peter, Fr. Kenneth Walker, age 28, has been killed during a robbery at the Mater Misericordiae Mission in Phoenix, Arizona. The robbery took place Wednesday night about 9 p.m. (Mountain Standard time). His confrere Fr. Joseph Terra, 56, was seriously injured; I have been informed that his condition is currently listed as critical but stable. The local news report can be read here. Of your charity, please pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Walker, for Fr Terra’s recovery, for their families and for their parishioners.

(CNN) – A priest was killed and another critically wounded in an attack at a Catholic church in Phoenix, police said early Thursday.

The Rev. Kenneth Walker was fatally shot, and the Rev. Joseph Terra is hospitalized in critical condition, police and church officials said. It was not clear what type of weapon was used to attack Terra, Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department said. A 911 call came in about 9 p.m. Wednesday (12 a.m. ET Thursday) from the Mater Misericordiae, or Mother of Mercy, Mission Catholic Church, Martos said.

The church celebrates Mass in the traditional Latin.

The emergency call to police was for a burglary and was made by one of the victims, Martos said. When police arrived, they found the two priests badly injured. Walker died at the hospital. Terra, the injured priest, was only able to minimally speak with authorities about what happened, Martos said. The priority is for him to be treated.

A green 2003 Mazda Tribute was stolen from church property, police said, and it was found abandoned. “The police are still gathering information and trying to sort through the details of this senseless act of violence,” the Diocese of Phoenix said in a statement. “We ask that people offer prayers for both priests, the religious community, their families and the parish.”

Prayers for Fr. Walker, may he rest in peace, and prayers, too, for Fr. Terra’s recovery.

I live very near this parish. I’m just sick. I’m thinking that they didn’t have any defensive weapons. Like always the police cannot be everywhere. If they had a means of self-protection things may have gone better. I wonder if they even have security cameras. It may have given them just enough “heads up” to stay safer and call the police.

Fr. Walker was a wonderful, holy priest. So is Fr. Terra, the pastor. My last memory of Fr Walker is from Sunday when I received Holy Communion from him. Such good priests. I am so upset I can barely speak. Please pray for the soul of Fr Walker who I am sure is in Heaven with our Lord and our Lady. And for the recovery of Fr. Terra.

How awful! :bighanky: :highprayer::gopray2::signofcross: I do not have any words, praying for all involved. Terrible news.

Eternal rest grant unto Fr. Kenneth Walker, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Heartbreaking. Praying for Fr. Terra’s recovery.

At our FSSP parish in Tacoma, WA we hired a security firm to provide a guard outside.

My prayers for both priests and their families.

This is horrible news, may this priest rest in peace. My prayers are with him, his family and congregation.

-]I saw him at a museum 7 hours before his death

I wanted to talk to him, but I was too scared. It’s so strange.

I was with my friend and as we were walking away from him, I told my friend ,“I’ll see him around, that’s how the world works…you see everyone twice.”

I guess that…I won’t. /-]

What in the world is this supposed to mean? Have you no decency?

I think he’s telling the truth that he saw this priest the day before; that he wanted to talk to him but didn’t, and that he said to his friend that he would get another chance later, “because you see everybody twice.”

Thank you! I was merely stating that now I will never get the chance to talk to him…which is very saddening to me.

I just find my statement very…interesting given the situation.

Thank you. I hope that’s what he meant. It just struck me wrong because this is personal for me. I meant no disrespect.

I apologize, ohsnapitslennon. I guess I am still in shock and have not stopped crying since 6:30 this morning when I learned of this. I’m sorry you missed your opportunity to talk to Fr. Walker.

I’m sorry if I came off rude. I have been crying in class, too. I didn’t realize he had died until another student brought it up in class.

No worries, ohsnapitslennon. I guess because I had mentioned receiving Holy Communion from Fr. Walker on Sunday I jumped to the conclusion that you were being mocking because my heart hurts so bad. I shouldn’t have. And I’m sorry if I added to your grief.
God bless you and I hope you get through your day of classes without too much grief.
I just heard on a news conference that Fr Terra gave Fr Walker last rIghts last night. In the midst of chaos, Fr. Walker received Extreme Unction. That’s a good thing and something we all hope for.
God bless.

There was a video posted on Rorate Caeli of a homily by Fr. Kenneth Walker, from July 2013, on Mercy and Justice. The sound quality is poor during the first seven minutes, and the last two minutes wouldn’t load on my computer, but it’s a good homily.
