Hi all if sexual abuse of children is rare why does California have over 80,000 sex offenders on its register yours michaelmac
Hi Michaelmac I don’t think it’s rare, I fully expect there to be paedophiles in my parish and in many other public places I visit such as sports centres etc. I expect them to be there because these are such places they frequent in order to meet children and it sickens me to the stomach.

I posed the question I did because people seem to think paedophiles are not out there in the public places they also visit.

I think people need to arm themselves and their children with preventative measures against paedophiles rather than remaining like ostrich’s with their heads in the sand thinking ‘surely it won’t happen.’ Awareness and knowing the signs of grooming is everything that can prevent a possible paedophile from committing a crime against our own families. These guys are clever manipulaters and people need to get informed and aware! I think Christians are too trusting with their children within their Parishes.

Probably because mosts states require not only pedohiles and rapists to register, but those who solicit prostitution, public nudity, statutory rape, lewd acts, etc.

In fact in many states one who is caught urinating in public must register as a sex offender. Go figure.

Perhaps the first steps to change is calling it like it is. Rape. To say molestation somehow diminishes it and makes it sound more acceptable than an attack on an adult.
If a woman is attacked, held in a closet and forced to comply to sexual acts it’s called rape. Her attacker is called a rapist and charged as such.
If a person attacks another person and forces himself or herself on them or forces the victim to comply to other sexual acts regardless of age or gender it’s RAPE!!!

The Philippines prescribes the death penalty for child rapists. When the country reinstated the death penalty in the 1990’s the very first person executed was one convicted of raping his minor step-daughter. No murder or anything. Just rape of a minor. He got the needle.

I also work in the field and I agree with you. If people saw first hand the damage done to these children there wouldn’t be a pro-molester/“soft” judge in any court in this country.

Just as an aside, has the boy you’re talking about been tried on various meds, and have the developmental disorders been ruled out?
I know they have tried several meds an so far had no success. No developmental disorders have been found.

…Oh there was one like that in England, it was horrible, I was truly disturbed, the child was a baby - that truly is terrible…
This abused babe you fret over today could, in twenty years, be the sexual predator you want to castrate or kill. Adults–even those with a history of abuse–have an absolute moral obligation to control their derranged impulses and avoid any sexual involvement with children. When they fail to do so–they deserve and in fact need to be isolated from society. However, when attempting to mete out justice let’s not forget that almost without exception abusers start out as victims. As a mother, I hate the thought of any child being abused. That sentiment provides me with an appreciation for the mercy that these tortured souls need and why only God can render justice to all those who have suffered at the hands of their human brothers.

I have a very good idea of what goes on. That’s why the Philippines has an even wider coverage of crimes covered by the death penalty. Moreover, in the Philippine justice system, sentences are mandatory, unlike in the US, where you have penalty phases of the trial. Here, if you’re found guilty of child molestation and have no mitigating circumstances, you will be sentenced to death immediately after conviction. If the judge decides to be “compassionate” and imposes life in prison, the Supreme Court will censure the judge and impose the death penalty itself.

And this is precisely because of the reasons you cited. Child rape very often is an ordeal worse than death. In the US, about the only people executed are killers, but not rapists or pedophiles.

Yes we are. But remember, the Magisterium of the Church is not opposed to the death penalty and recognizes the right of the states to use it.

Besides, the death penalty here is not some secret law that just comes out during the trial. People here know the law. If they don’t want the needle, then for heaven’s sake, don’t commit the crime!

But if it’s any consolation, President Arroyo imposed a moratorium on executions for the duration of her term.

When I first ran across this thread, I had just finished reading about the bust of the recent child pornography ring. After reading about how an eighteen month old was being sodomized … LIVE … over the internet by an adult male, I was so upset … I should have waited to calm down to post my thoughts.

I do not think my initial reaction of anger and rage is appalling. I think it is a natural reaction to such evil. My mistake was to post my opinion while I was in that state, because it presented my opinion wrong. I should have taken a time out, and I am sorry if my initial rage contributed to any sort of lynch mob mentality.

I did the next day, (seeing a little more clearly) say that I prefered life in prison … NO PAROLE …, but it seems people want to skip that post and keep quoting my previous, yes flopfoot …😉
emotion filled ones.
I agree that a visceral sense of rage and disgust is a healthy response to this type of incident. Responding with indifference or sympathy for the offender in a case like this tends to suggest pathology or lack of empathy and the natural instinct to protect children.

I think the death penalty is completely appropriate for these offenders. What they do to children is worse than murder in many cases. They often destroy the children and condemn them to suffering and further victimization for the rest of their lives.

If there are mitigating circumstances, such as a compelling case where the offender was also a victim, life without parole could be considered as an alternative to death. This is with the stipulation that they work to pay the expenses of housing them.

Because the punishment is too lenient. There would be fewer if we had mandatory capital punishment for this type of crime.
I agree. The fear of punishment must outweigh the desire to molest the child.

My basic point of thought is that pedophylia is not common or very wide spread compared to other things and disorders of similar nature. I wont deny that there is no way of knowing, but he chances are very slim to none, especially in every parish, that is rediculous.
I would say depending upon the size of the parish, there are very likely sex offenders present. Child molesters are often the “pillars of the community.”

Agreed. Good point.

Sounds appropriate to me.
